  1. Hi Brad! Very important attention and reminder. 👍
I am going to drill a hole in the bolt and use a safety wire. It is convenient because the wire can be removed and thus the motor can be rotated if necessary. When I stripped down the engine, it also had a French Lock that hadn’t been folded, but was there an imagination that it would act as friction when softer? Dont know. I bet that lot of enthusiast mechanics (like me) leave just like that.

Brad! I visited you website and Facebook. Wow! You are pro😎👍

  2. Hi Mr John C and all you helper. Thank you very much. Big help🙏
    I will order from Summit:

Dayco #15435 which John D recommend 0.44 / 43.50 (this is very close as I have measured)
    Dayco #15375 which John D recommend 0.44 / 37.50
    Two Continental #15556 7/16 / 55.00  This is 1 inch longer than I got from SI and half inc longer than John C #15545 0.44 / 54.50
And just in case Two Continental #15565 7/16 / 56.00

I think that original Alternator and Oil pump might had narrower than 0.44 belts but I think that these will work.
I will tell how they work.

  3. Thanks. I'm going to take measurements and Im sure I found correct ones from Summit. They have Dayco and Continental. I will tell you my measurements.
These which I got from IS shows me that they are very wrong. We are talking about inces. If these are correct belts, then my pulleys are wrong ones from the start. I havent changed those.
    Mr mfg. Thank You.😊

  4. Hi, Please help. I bought from IS new belt set to -63 R2. Including:

    1. Supercharger: 2 pcs Continental Elite 15545. Width 0.438 (11,13mm). Lenght 54 inc. This is super tight and very, very hard to install even when engine is in the rack. The spring is almost max tight position. Cannot be correct lenght. Too short. Impossible to install two belts.
    2. Alternator: Gates XL 7380. Width 13/32. (10mm) Lenght 38 5/8 inc. Adjustement is now max with one bolt. Too long. If I put Alternator Adjusting Bracket top of surge tank bolt - still a problem.
    3. Steering Pump: Gates XL 7440. Widht 13/32. Lenght 44 5/8 inc. Adjustement is now almost max. Too long but works.

What are correct sizes? Where to get correct ones?

If you find something wrong dont hasitate to comment and advice.
PS. Paxton SN90 is not fully installed (will have longer shaft). Fuel Pump is not installed.

    Leo,

Where is the filling hole in the original that you posted to compare, under the label? I was told the one that I posted  had a tapered plug that’s in one of the boxes of parts in the car. I don’t see a fill hole in any pictures I find.

Hi, I have one Paxton that's broken. It had Herndon tape on the top of the hole. This means that Paxton has been repaired in the past at a Herndon service center. I don't see any meaning for the hole. Not to fill. (My wrong conclusion because I didnt look under tape) Hole goes out the cover. I also have number MS1779. I can't find any other numbers. Hope those who know more will comment. I understand you fill oil from the oil stick hole.

  6. I think that its correct Paxton but somebody has installed filling whole with rubber cap ( looks like that). I see also oil stick which is correct (Im not 100% sure). Check also if somebody has installed drain blug. It was in my Avanti and result was breakage because it was leaking and previous owner didnt know that.

Here is the original to compare.

Edit ... Also check that there is oil in Paxton. If it is dry, note that it may have been used without oil as in my case. I bought a new one and paid over $ 1,500.
Hmmm... Black one. This have to be early production as we have discussed her. Experienced enthusiasts will know more.

Edit, edit.... What black breather cap is on the engine?

  7. There are two ones. One on the cover and one with a bracket. I dont see those from very early photos but most fresh photos from engine have those or at least one clip. I dont have Authentic Manual near to check. Im now spending lazy days in my cottage. I dont know where to get those clips.
Here is also photo 1964 R2 Barnfind which same clips. (Added to later production? Dont know)

  8. Hi 64Studeavanti, Maybe I need better glasses (for eyes and bigger for beer). But check the king pins. Are they properly assembled? The boss on the pin should be to front. Dont see 100% from the photo, but I ask for certainty. Look like wrong to me but youll see better.

  9. Hmmm ... Those ones which were Black color and afterwards painted Orange, should there be black paint seen under orange? I suspect that such a big job would have been done that the old color would have been completely removed before new paint🤔

Leo B, the pictures your provided do not represent the factory produced cars.  As mentioned, early prototypes and maybe 1001 had a black supercharger but 99% of them were orange.   These cars don't represent how the factory produced cars left the factory.  As evidence, the lower picture above has a McCulloch emblem on the supercharger which wasn't on the factory produced cars.  Further, the air cleaner wasn't the black wriggled finish as shown in that same picture.  The prototypes and a few early cars may have had black superchargers but the factory produced cars were orange.

If the authenticity manual states they were all black, it is wrong.  There have been a few other items in the manual that have since been determined to be incorrect as well.  Aside from this, the vast majority of the manual is correct and is still a great source to have on the shelf.

Yes. The engines in the pictures are very early and do not show production engines. Interesting publications still. I have restored one Laverda 750S and one Motoguzzi 750S3 etc etc. It was very difficult to know what was right. I learned from the Italian and British motorcycles that everything was evolution, not a one-year model with one fact as it seems to be today.

  11. I have 1. Motor Trend July 1962; 1963 Road Test Studebaker Avanti R2 2. Motor Trend August; 1963 Granatelli's R3 and Standard Test.

In both issues looks like both Avantis have Black Paxton. Photos are B/W but still very sure about color. Here you see photos.
Note that R2 is very early one. You see this also from magazine cover. I think you know more about production ones.

I have correct combo. Shorter outer rod and longer inner rod. The replacement outer rods are a bit long at 19 1/2". Should be 19 1/8". The 19 1/2" rod is what the vendors are selling. The inner rods are 3 7/8. I set the installed length of both rods at about 24" same as the old rods.  Wheel alignment will get it closer.

Ok. 610 mm 24” should be correct. Then in your photo, right rod is not assembled and without the stopper (in king pin) and the wheel turns more than should like in your photo. I just noticed... in my photo the dust shield is in the wrong side.😒

FWIW, here are some photos. Note the gold colored washers on top of the knuckle arms to bring the castle nut high enough to secure with cotter pin.

Hi. Something is wrong. I will look more and closer. Check my photo on the drivers side of the same area. See the position of the joint. The steering wheel turned all to the right. After assembly and without tires, you should be able to turn the steering wheel with your little finger and without any play.

    1. If you have outer 19 7/8 then inner 3 7/64

    2. If you have outer 19 1/8 then inner 3 7/8

Total same lenght in both version. Part Catalogue shows version 2. Is after serial 4904.

I think your combo is not correct.

Just this afternoon I communicated with a friend that bought a new, white P1800 and still has it.  She has only owned new Volvos  starting with a 1959 PV544 Sport.  The 1800 is the only previous one that she kept.  I have known her since the 1950s.

👍 If she needs any help with Volvo P1800, please contact me leo@belik.fi
