  1. Hi. I found Moog variable springs for 1963 from Avantiparts. I understand that "variable" is same as progressive spring and works soft > tight. I dont know the height.

    https://avantiparts.biz/coil-springs-h-d-front-avanti-63-to-85-526134/

Standard Avanti -63 springs are 526135 and the free height is 14 5/8 (by SI). My old ones are 526135*MC and maybe old which makes them about 1/2" shorter.

Do you have experience how Moog ones work? Do they change stance/rake comparing standard ones?

  2. Hi! If the Turquoise which you see in my previous first post is standard stance/rake, then the other which is in the Trade Unique Cars -article ( which has been lowered), my conclusion is the article ones front is 2" lowered I think. My choise will be standard back and 1" lower front.
Images are edited by me. Not for commercial use.

I agree, but perhaps the Stude engineers thought it obstructed forward vision too much????....(I would guess they would have simply mounted the mirror in the 'normal' above the windshield position but for the Avanti overhead light/heater controls switches.

Race and speed vehicles drivers and riders dont look back.  Everythig is ahead 🤣

As an aside, for the longest time I had the inside rearview mirror in my own '63 Studebaker Avanti (63R1379) installed onto the windshield four or so inches down from the upper header....and it 'worked' quite well in that position! (I also used a larger mirror head during this time)

However, when I had a new windshield installed in my Avanti a few years ago, I went back to the tiny 'factory' mirror attached to the windshield in its 'factory' near the bottom location....just for the sake of originality......SILLY ME!!!!!!!!!!:o :D

    No, no. Not a silly.B)
I prefer oginal vehicles as they where. If I want something better I buy new one. I think its very important to respect history and vehicle culture including all discomfort it had.👍

Sure was, several, if not all the earliest prototype (or "EX") Studebaker Avantis utilized a dash mounted rearview mirror. (note how large the mirror head is!)

The production windshield mounted mirror, with its 'tiny' mirror head and low mounting....was definitely a step in the wrong direction!:(

I believe you can see this same dash mounted rearview mirror in photos of the Bonneville "Due Cento" Studebaker Avanti!:)

Yes. Much better and looks same design as outside rear mirror.

  6. Hi! Please help. If I know what kind of Coil Spring and Rear Leafs I have to order from Eaton, I will be happy. How much + or - comparing standard.

    I love this.👍

Owner says "couple of inces" lower. Both Front and Rear 2 inces or...?

How about this? Is this with standard Rear Leafs and Front Coil Spring? I need to ask because my leafs and spring are old. Maybe originals.

I can't make out the serial number on your production order, but it begins with R-45xx  so what is the full serial number?   Your production order says that your Avanti was tagged 99 Las Vegas Driveaway.   So it should be listed among all the driveaway cars on pages 20 and 21 of Avanti Magazine Issue 195 last fall.

Because it is a 1963 model, it would have had speckled carpet, black and some other color, probably black and red speckled carpet.   Over 60 years of use and several owners, it very well could have had the carpets replaced with all black carpets.   What color is the carpet on the. bottom of your door panels?

Since you're in Finland,  email Dan Booth at avantisrus@gmail.com   and you can ask about his Born reports and see if anything mentions carpets.

Hi Ischuc. Sorry I thought you see serial number from my profile R4543. The car is in the list of Avanti Magazine Las Vegas Driveaway Cars.
Carpet on the floor and bottom of door panels are red/black. Seems to me old and original. I will email to Dan Booth because I have an other question also:
I dont have Windshield Washer. Nothing remains there has been washer. To me seems that washer has been option which has not been chosen. First owner lived in California, Santa Ana.

    Hi, Leo B,

At a quick look the only thing I can find incorrect is that the Claret Red vinyl wasn't available on 1963 Avantis. The transition from 1963 to 1964 Avantis was gradual and complicated.  Fred Fox's article covers it well.  He states that the Claret Red vinyl was introduced in late August 1963.  This was after the start of 1964 Avanti production.

    --Dwight

OK. Thanks. Claret Red deleted. Photo updated.
PS. I have R-4543 Gray + Metal Red + Red/Black carpet. 99% sure its original carpet.  Article says; Red & black carpet switched to all black  R-4275
Lot of exceptions. Maybe lot of plans and instructions which are written in marketing department and still used whats left in warehouse. 🤔

To be certain of how your Avanti was originally equipped, you should purchase the factory production order from the Studebaker National Museum, or from Nostalgic Motorcars.  This production order will show how your car was equipped when it left the factory.

Hi Ischuc, I have Production Record Copy and Drive-Away Shipper from Museum. I see that my Avanti interior is 953 RDV but nothing about Carpet.
I dont find email to Nostalgic Motorcars. I like to buy Born Report Build Sheet. I tried from webshop but shop didnt accept to send to Finland.
Strange that I dont find interior 953 RDV. Maybe just written wrong? Correct Metal Red which I think I have is 853 RDV.
Dwight. Do you find 953 RDV?

Your car isn't an exception to what I stated (But, the last sentence of my second paragraph (above) should be striken (reason: misleading.).  According to the Avanti Color & Uph Selector book the Fawn & Black "salt & pepper"carpets could have come with either the Fawn & Elk or Fawn & Black upholstery.  And, the Fawn & Elk interior is the only interior color that could have come with black carpets.  Further, the only exterior colors available with BOTH Fawn & Elk uph. AND Fawn & Black carpets were Avanti Black and Avanti White.

Related to this, I fixed up a '63 Avanti years ago.  It was built Avanti Gold with Fawn & Elk interior.  Predictably, there was still some of its original black carpet high up in the firewall area.

One takeaway is that a Fawn & Elk interior could have come with EITHER Fawn & Black carpets or all-black carpets (depending on the exterior color).

Another takeaway is that ONLY the Fawn & Elk interior could have come with black carpets.  ALL other interior upholstery colors came with salt & pepper carpets.

So, we can conclude that your Avanti # 63R1379's exterior must have been either Avanti Black or Avanti White.  (Unless, of course, someone ordered the car with an out-of-normal combination.)

    --Dwight

Hi, Do you mean that Gold an Red which had Fawn/Elk interior had not Black carpet in early models? Like the selector shows. Those had only Fawn/Black carpet?

A little addition to Leo B's info above:

Orange interiors (upholstery combination #8) were available on 1963 Avantis with gray, black, white, or gold exterior colors. (source: 1963 Avanti Color & Upholstery Selector)

    --Dwight

    Hi Dwight. Thank you 😊
When Orange 8. was released and when discontinued? Was it only early color to choose?
I wonder this cause my photos dont show that color. My photos have to be from autumn 1963 when both reds; Claret Red and Metallic Red where available same time.

  12. Is this out of topic or not. If somebody needs to know Exterior color > Upholstery Interior colors 1963/1964?

Avanti Black > 1. Velvet Black, 2. Turquoise, 3. Claret Red, 4. Smoked Elk, 5. Metallic Red

Avanti White > 1. Velvet Black, 2. Turquoise, 3. Claret Red, 4. Smoked Elk, 5. Metallic Red

Avanti Tuquoise > 1. Velvet Black, 2. Turquoise

Avanti Gold > 1. Velvet Black, 3. Claret Red, 4. Smoked Elk

Avanti Red > 1. Velvet Black, 4. Smoked Elk, 5. Metallic Red

Avanti Gray > 1. Velvet Black, 3. Claret Red, 5. Metallic Red

Where is Orange? Is this later version without Orange upholstery including also Black Exterior? 1964.

+ with this you know which carpet to which upholstery (including Salt & Pepper which was changed to Black later). Correct?

YES!:)....the carpet sample looks correct to me...........but the 'Fawn' and the 'Elk' samples appear, to me, a bit too dark.

Yes. They look too dark. Easy to compare Fawn Instrument panel. Maybe there is a reason to show so dark; if correct hard to see is it white or "beige" in different kind of screen.
