When dealing with any SBC engine, it is very useful to check the number stamped on the right front of the block, just below the head. There are several sites on line that have the info to decode it. For example, my V1001CLM tells me that it was manufactured at the Flint Plant, on October 1, 1977, 350 CID, Automatic transmission, L48, 185 HP, for Corvette/Monte Carlo application.

Absolutely CORRECT! I’d love to see a photo of the R3 installation by the Granatellis into that Hawk… but I don’t think such a picture exists! (?)

I'm going to say $19K. New York is an expensive town and I know Studebaker didn't have any money but this is NOT the area to trim the budget. Fingers crossed.

Here’s a way to find an electrical short! 🤣

To me this sounds like an occasional “ground out” due to a frayed wire… a wire that has been chafing against a piece of metal, and is now occasionally grounding out to it… blowing the fuse. A real pain in the - - - to find sometimes! Good luck!

Why are electrical problems always rooted behing the dash?!! Any thoughts on why this fuse keeps blowing? I'm thinking about just wireing a whole new set of wires for these four items and bypass the old circuit. But looking at the wireing diagram it appears it runs through the courtesy light and cigar lighter too. Any tips are welcome.

My '72 RQB1878 had a 400cid in it. I found out the hard way because everything I read indicated it was a 350. When I replaced the 400 with a 350 long block I found out the harmonic balancer and flex plate were the external balancers and the new engine vibrated. Once I swapped those 2 componets out with the correct ones, no more vibration. A hard and expensive lesson was learned.

This is good information… and might give some other Avanti owner with rocker switch problems the courage to attempt a similar fix!!

The Granatellis did something different with RS1021 (the engine in 63R-1025). They stroked it to 3 3/4" with the stock 289 bore. Andy G. tried this difference because the thinking at the time was that a longer stroke would give more lower end power gains. This car was a "cheater" or "hot rod" car which Andy used to drag 426 Max Wedge MoPars on Riverside's 1/2 mile drag strip. A So. Cal. engineer bought the car from the Granatellis, lost his job, moved to Nor. Cal. where my father and uncle bought the car in '69 or '70. I drove it to high school in the middle and later '90s. Correct though, that ALL other 299s were made by going 0.06" additional bore. Andy knew that even the stroker engine would be fine if it was ever challenged, so long as the stewards only did a simple volume check. It would have failed had they popped the heads off and actually measured the bore for that 0.06" increase.

I’m not exactly sure what other proof you’re looking for….. perhaps you could check with the ad agency itself, although I’m not really sure if they’re still in business. Feel free to post a few trivia questions of your own….. I started the ball rolling with this trivia section back in 2014, however I always hoped that I wouldn’t be the only person to post questions….Who knows…you may end up with a troll of your very own!!
