  1. Past hour
  2. Sorry, no San Bernardino, only Palm Springs. Still a nice addition to an Avanti.
  3. Today
  4. Wow!…. It appears you’ve definitely caught the ‘Avanti Virus’ !!!… Good for you!
  5. Would you happen to have any from San Bernardino? My Avanti was sold new from there.
  6. You could also try one of the fuel tank cleaning and sealer kits. Amazon has one by KBS Coatings
  7. Well, I guess I just bought another on RQB2594..... I am happy with this find.
  8. You can lower the engine idle to set the timing which takes just a couple of minutes if you prepare everything, then raise it back to their recommended rpm.
  9. Thanks AD. Wouldn’t think anything would stay cool sitting in the Arizona sun, but maybe the air conditioning would work a little better with the windows tinted. Can you post a photo?
  10. Who wrote that article? Pretty screwed up from what I’ve read. For someone pushing the marque their information is very flawed.
  11. Looking for recommendations for repair.
  12. Here is a link to an interesting Avanti website. https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=7766aa8f2ac4bdcbc83d4adc31fa4d404ff1d3b032d0e2c5673ef881b4124f76JmltdHM9MTc1MTE1NTIwMA&ptn=3&ver=2&hsh=4&fclid=0eb6b708-aff1-6273-0a64-a520aee3636f&psq=www.theavanti.net&u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudGhlYXZhbnRpLm5ldC8&ntb=1
  13. Mike, Yes, I'm happy with the outcome. The window tinting does help although I can't say how much or to what degree. I live in AZ where the sun in brutal in the Summer, and if your car sits outside uncovered for any length of time it's going to get hot no matter what you do, but every little but helps.
  14. Yesterday
  15. FOR SALE: Palm Springs Studebaker dealer style license plate frame. I picked up a few of these in the late 1970s in Riverside, CA. After almost 50 years, it’s time to clear the garage. Chrome plated metal frame with raised chrome letters and emblem. See photo above. $125 + $19.15 USPS Priority shipping. Shipped in a sturdy box. Message me with any questions. Dennis
  16. Seventeen digit ‘VIN’ didn’t come into play until 1981… This Avanti is a ‘75.
  17. The quality of Chinese products has improved tremendously over the past couple decades…. That’s why America is now playing ‘catch up’ …..Just sayin’
  18. You should have a VIN # on the drivers side of the dash where it meets the windshield. Take a photo of it and bring it along with the bill of sale to your license department and see what they say. You may have to get a bonded title.
  19. These are what I'll use on my R3. Thanks for the recommendation. --Dwight
  20. Unfortunately, these are on "National back order."
  21. Last week
  22. When it comes to spark plugs…. To each his own I guess!!!!
  23. Brad put the Autolites in my R3 motor, and they work fantastic. I have used NGK plugs for over 50 years, but have now used Autolites in three other cars and am impressed with them. Also, counterfeit NGK's are flooding the market and it seems lately, many NGK plugs are almost impossible to source. If people want to use Champions, that is fine, but in the 1970s and 1980s, at all the USAC races, there was always a Champion "rep" giving away plugs to all the racers. We finally figured out whey he was giving them away, nobody would actually spend money to buy them!
  24. I use Autolite Platinum AP85. Champions are now China sourced, and quality is non-existent.
  25. For a non-Avanti vehicle, I found my local auto parts store had the bottle of defroster grid liquid/paste. It was super easy to apply and it worked great. Installing the masking on the grid on the back window of an Avanti will be a lot more difficult than the back wimdow of my minivan, however. Once the edges are masked, however, the application should be easy.
  26. The water pump I used is from Jeggs. I incorrectly called it a racing water pump. It's basicly a heavy duty high flow pump. I also took out the old surge tank and and put in an inline filler spout in the upper radiator hose like the later models. I think that will aid in getting out more air. I can't accurately set the timing until I can idle the engine. The instructions that came with the new engine specificly stated not to let it idle until break in was complete.
  27. Here is another option for R1 plugs. https://www.ngk.com/ngk-4536-xr45-v-power-spark-plug
  28. Many states have converted their registration systems to standardized software that "require" certain features like the now-standard VIN format. Vehicle serial numbers that were already in the system were somehow grandfathered in by either adding leading zeros or by a software mod that permitted them to exist as is. Most of the DMV people one deals with were not even born yet when the current 17-digit VIN system started in 1981, so they simply repeat the "requirement" that all vehicles have a standard VIN. They are simply repeating the current thinking, despite the fact that virtually no vehicle built before that time had a serial number with the now-standard number of digits. You may have to escalate the battle to a DMV deputy director, or some such. A letter to your local state legislator might help, too.

    RQB #

Message to Bob Johnstone…. Hi Bob.., if you check any of the rosters sent out to AOAI members over the last several years, you’ll see that every 1985 Avanti listed has its internal four digit serial number preceded by the letters RQB. I feel that ‘AAV’ did not become the standard prefix until the 1987 model year Avantis… Thanks, Ed ( Of course, when it comes time to register a 1985 Avanti, it’s the seventeen digit VIN number that only counts!)
