Studebaker Avanti Options

What was the other item offered in the Avanti Order Guide as a new option for the Studebaker Avanti customer, offered at the same time additional customer options for rear axle ratio selection became available, and why was this new option offered ?

Logical answer, but that's not the customer option that was offered at the very same time the additional rear axle ratios were offered..

For customers who wanted a quieter exhaust and, in some states, to conform to vehicle inspection standards for noise.

Early on, Studebaker connected the front exhaust pipes with a crossover pipe to even out the exhaust pulses for a ‘smoother’ exhaust note…. personally, I prefer separated exhaust pipes with glasspack mufflers for that ‘raucous’, in your face exhaust sound!!

You and me, both!!...that's just one of the many allures of the Avanti.

I guess the quite exhaust was just regular mufflers. They mention resonators but I always thought a resonator was in addition to the muffler. I’ve never seen resonators on a Studebaker Avanti. At least I don’t remember them.

That's what I've always understood a resonator was-an component in the exhaust system in addition to the muffler to help quiet the exhaust ..But in the 11/28/1962 memo, Studebaker refers to the muffler option not specifically as a resonator, but as a resonator "type" and resonator "system", so that must have been 'Studebaker-speak' for a quiet muffler..

Plate 04-1, page number 45, in the Avanti Parts Catalog shows the "special-order exhaust system with quiet-tone mufflers and resonators."  The resonators are behind the mufflers, ahead of the differential.  This system is shown with the crossover pipe between the exhaust pipes, forward of the mufflers.

The "standard exhaust system with fibre-glass mufflers" on the same plate does not show the crossover pipe.

IIRC my '64 R2 Avanti in ~1967 had fiber-glass mufflers AND the crossover pipe.  I distinctly remember replacing the exhaust pipes WITH new ones (with crossover pipes, from the local Stude dealer) in the parking lot of the base at which I was stationed ~1967-68.  (Standard disclaimer:  Who knows what happened to my car between Dec. 1963 and when I bought it in 1967-68.)

The crossover pipe in the exhaust pipes was functional, to reduce exhaust back pressure.  We have since learned that an X pipe is more effective.  I personally will go for function over form any day.  BRING BACK my crossover pipe!  (AFAIK, NLA from pipe benders.)

I had this in my Photo File well before (2013) I ever bought (2022) or had interest in owning an Avanti. It struck me as strange that I had it. 

I do on occasion download Pix's of unique design items since I'm technically a Designer / Architect. This must have subliminally caught my eye.  Glad it did. ... I'm thinking of blowing up the Pix for my Office Wall, along with some other Design Drawings I have hanging in there.

Both of my 64s came with the quiet exhaust system. Both have mufflers and resonators. The exhaust system with mufflers, resonators, and crossover are available from Park's Pipes.

No, I've never seen resonators on an Avanti.  However, my impression is that most Avantis were ordered with the standard exhaust system.

Good info -- thanks!  IIRC Parks offers aluminized pipes, which seem to last as long as SS and look as good too.

My first impression, back in 1962, of Studebaker's Avanti were that it was loaded with high tech, and that included the crossover pipe.  So, I'll try to put it back onto my '64 Avanti.

That’s because you only bought the ‘Hot Rods” Nelson !!!!!!!!!!

My first Stude Avanti, 63R3623, had factory ‘quiet’ exhaust, with small oval mufflers and resonators in place of the L&R pipes that normally connected the standard fiberglass mufflers to the rear tailpipes.

It also had the connector pipe that connected the two exhaust pipes….just ahead of the oval mufflers .

That ‘connector’ pipe really had no performance advantage… it was there to smooth out the exhaust pulses in the optional quiet Avanti exhaust system!
