  1. IIRC the Diff/bearing/seal kit I used was from a 72 IH Scout II on my 74. Compare it to yours on the interweb. If all else fails you can take the numbers off the existing bearings and, possibly, seals.

As far as a posi, unless you plan to put a lot of power to it about any will be better than what you have. I like Auburn but nothing wrong with the original Dana/Spicer setup. Be sure you know the axle spline count before you order. I think mine were 30 but I'm doing this all from memory.

If you plan to do it yourself, Download the Spicer manual and read it closely on installation including spreading the case and opening up the older carrier bearings to allow easy removal of the carrier when you set the pinion preload.

  2. I continue to be puzzled by the term gel-coat. If I look it up the definition is a polyester or epoxy coating sprayed into the female mold prior to glass or other material being laid to create strength and thickness.

Did I gel-coat mine when I sprayed the epoxy 2K on it after scraping off the old paint and primer and sanding the surface of my 74? If so, then it's just another term for good preparation and painting procedure. If not - What am I missing???

  3. As much as I like and use JB Weld, I would not trust it with 15+ gallons of gas above it in my garage!! It could mean that that area was corroded so I'd try to find a gas tank Renew or some one else like them.

IIWM, I'd cut out that portion of the tank and after mucho venting and filling, weld in a small bottom section with a new bung installed.

You can still find good used, new or stainless tanks available if so inclined. Bob

  4. Like to replace the cable on my 71. Any suggestions on installation of an electric opener? I liked the on on my dad's Cad that would pull the deck lid down.

Depends on how stock you want it. If that's important, then find one from another Avanti would probably fit with little/no modifications. If not, most aftermarket units are just a solenoid that you adapt.

In my 54K, I used a GM unit that pulls closed as you describe above. It took a fair amount of modifications but works.

The best place to find a unit that may work is Ebay. Not saying you need to buy one there but you'll find pictures of most any unit available. That's how I found the one I used on the 54K that pulls closed.

There are still a couple of wrecking yards that let me prowl the grounds so that could be another source.

Lastly, to make the pull down unit work, you will need to supply a constant on 12v source to the latch, I would think. Bob

  5. If it's original as you say, the answer is no overdrive. It's about 10 years early for an overdrive. It wouldn't be hard to convert over to one with your 350 SBC but you will need some parts and a couple of mods. 700R4, 4L60 and 4L60E and 2004R will all work with some changes. Bob

  6. Go on line and check out the 'Bumper Boyz'...(Calif)....last time I checked with them they had plated '63-'83 Avanti bumpers in stock.

Agree, I spoke to their rep at a swap meet in late June and he said they had the center bar for $400, didn't ask about the ends nor exchange. Dan Booth does have them at Nostalgic Motors in Wixom, Mi. As of the May swap meet in South Bend, he had both used and new. Not cheap but available. Bob

  7. Not a big deal to reinstall, as long as the work is done properly. But unless you have access to another Avanti for measurements, I wait for a set of bumpers unless you can see the cut lines from behind. Don't neglect the slits in the front valence for the brackets that were also possibly filled. They have a lip for strength.

As a second thought, sanding the out side of the front fender in the bracket area may show the outline depending how the repair was done.

  8. If you are nervous check the actual pressure with another gauge but while it's lower than my SBC's run it's within the generally acceptable 10 PSI per 1000 RPM as I suspect you are under 2500 RPMs with an overdrive tranny. If correct, it probably represents some wear inside the engine if you are using the usual 10W30/40 oil at 185 - 190 deg. I wouldn't get excited unless you are running higher viscosity oil.

  9. Hey Ed, while you're at it I could use your mirrors and maybe the wiper switch, and,....

Warren, I don't remember the year of your Avanti but a lot of the II's used AMC mirrors. They are usually available on Ebay although someone else will need to give you the years and model of AMC product that fit. Cost is all over the map. I adapted a set of Camaro mirrors to my 74 which are body color and, I think, look a lot better. I think 70-81 are the ones I used.

  10. What kind of aftermarket tilt steering wheel can I add to my 73 Avanti II (I've lost all the weight I can and the seat won't go back any further!) Don't worry about fat boy jokes I have both heard and told em myself. Will the Pontiac fit as previously described?

Realistically, the columns you are looking for are now about 40+ years old. Why not just bite the bullet, call Ididit and discuss with them your needs including the wiring harness needs, tilt provisions, etc. It may be more costly, Although a lot of those old columns are approaching $400, and get exactly what you need without the problems associated with older units.

  11. The problem is you are just coming out of the morass created by emissions standards on your engine and there is still a lot of legacy crap inside and controlling it. You don't need anything fancy, like a roller cam, but you should consider a package of a cam, manifold, HEI dissy and a carb. That's probably $1000 or so. Then you need to install it. If you can do it yourself then the costs are lower but you should still probably buy gaskets and do a valve job adding to your cost.

Realistically, you still will have a 305 that runs better BIIWM, I spend the money on a good crate engine and be done with it.

I'll post a plug. I don't know where you are but there is a forum member, PackardV8 (Jack Vines) that builds engines and has an excellent reputation. Get hold of him and discuss your needs. You should have a 4-speed OD trans and a high geared rear end so mileage should stay fairly good. This way you can go up in cubic inches 350/383/400 and still be in good shape.

The dual exhausts etc will help minimally but the real significant changes are inside and bigger. Roller rockers require a new cam about a $800 pkg alone.

My 83 acquired a 355 SBC roller engine with Aluminum heads etc. Very happy with it but unless you fall into the deal I did, it would be an expensive upgrade.

  12. So apparently my pullout got pulled out or just was never there. I looked at the manual again and it is an 82 manual relabeled 83 on the cover.

Ed, I don't care about any other diagrams but if you could copy the fuse box diagrams I'd be grateful. PDF or copy by mail or whatever, I'll cover the costs.

    Thx, Bob

  13. In 1993 I did some work on a 1983 Avanti, Original owner, the owners manual had several sheets of schematics as part of the manual.

    GAWen

Just curious where you found the schematics in the 83 manual? I looked through mine and can't find them anywhere. Were they possibly a pullout section or separate loose pages?

    Bob

  14. Considering the minimal documentation that was provided with slightly earlier Avanti's unless you count the circuit printing on the fusebox itself as part of the schematics, I'll say true
