  1. My first thought is that not all circuits are fuse protected unless you rewired them that way. There are a couple of fuseable links that carry unfused power and could show resistance potentially, so you may need to disconnect the alternator and starter leads for starters if you need to resolve the question.

If it continues to worry you, you may want to start disconnecting each accessory.

I spent two days hunting for a similiar issue in a friends 63 vette and it turned out to be a cigarette lighter socket that had a small problem from a shorted lighter element that had been removed.

I'm sorry to hear about the damage. It has to be a terrible feeling when you go back and look at it later. In situations like that in the past, I generally start mentally kicking my own arse when I visit the scene of the crime.

Glad none of your parts were in the way.

It will be interesting to see the final forensics on no brakes with a dual M/C system. Secondly, could you cover how you found a body shop when you do. I'm curious if you look for vette shops or what other criteria is important.

  3. Bob...

I have Sanderson block hugger headers on my car and there was no problem with clearances. I can get some pics of them in the car and post them for you later. I don't know what issues an '83 might have compared to my '70, but I can at least give you an idea.

    Thanks Bruce.

I'll be interested in seeing if there is a difference. Possibly a larger steering box or maybe I just didn't find the Sanderson headers you have.

Here is a shot from below of my steering box and the 2.5" ram horns. You can see how close the box is to the block and why there is no room for the #7 downpipe so it must go up slightly and then down.

  4. I stopped by the shop today to drop off the new Auto Meter gauges and check on the engine progress. The block mains were being line bored when I was there. Heads were cleaned up ready to put valves in. Roller cam is coming in Tuesday, with carb rebuilding and possible new intake manifold to install, the owner said the motor should be back together on Wednesday. Even with the motor put back together, there is still the radiator to get cleaned, leak tested along with removal of the gas tank to be cleaned, coated, and re-installed with new sending unit and gas lines to the motor, gauges installed, block hugger headers installed and connected with the exhaust pipes and everything buttoned back up, I'm guessing another week, before taking to the trans shop for the 4 speed automatic overdrive.

Once you get the engine reinstalled, could you post a picture or two of the headers. A lot of us continue to be curious about what fits and what becomes available. My search for headers that fit my 83 resulted in my using the 2.5" OEM Ram Horns from early 60's vettes. The only thing close that I found were the Tru Rams from Speedway that would fit and possibly one set of Sanderson cast headers. The problem has always been the steering gear requires the #7 exhaust to come up and then join the dump. Thanks

  5. Being a "kid" of 62, I don't feel the need for speed that I once did. Its been a while since I have collected an speeding tickets and I would just as soon keep it that way. At the engine rebuilders place in the stall next to the Avanti is a 68 Chevelle with a Crate 582 and nitrous. Now that is a serious horsepower maker. The shop is also going to pull my gas tank to get cleaned out, leak tested and coated and add new lines to the motor. They also can replace the instrument gauges, so I need to pick some new ones out. By the time the work is done and car is running, the trans guy should have the 200 R4 built and ready to go in. When all that gets done, I'll really have the "need for cruisin speed"!

I'll admit to being a "kid" of 68 and went looking for an Avanti II to return to my early driving years. I've not had a ticket since 1970 but the 355 SBC that sets in the 83 is rated a 400 HP.

I don't do a lot of fast driving but I must admit that the deep rumble is appreciated at car shows and the trip back into the seat occasionally when I hit the pedal hard not only brings back pleasant thoughts of my past. It also develops the most devilish grin you can imagine and my wife even comments on how much I seem to enjoy it.

That 400 SBC is a torque monster so give it enough help to breathe well and let the 200R4 and about a 3:40 - 3:70 posi rear end improve your mood (Choice depends on your RPM comfort level at 70 MPH or so). Mine has a 4:10 posi but the 400 has great torque ability so a less agressive gearing is fine. You also have room for at least 8" rims so treat it to a good set of wide ground patch tires.

  6. Yes the R2 does not have a/c. It has 3 groove pulley and it has a three hole bracket right along side the alternator to hold the S/C. The R1 and R2 both have a vacuum gauge. I believe they both have a dual point distributor, but not sure.

Don does not have a website but gets great reviews on his systems from SDC and AOAI members and you can get them in larger diameter than Nostalgic.

I have a set on my 83 and they fit like a glove. He will also make any revisions you would like. I used shorter mufflers and bigger pipes than stock ;) and he made the correct adjustments in the fit. His are stainless only.

    I highly recommend him.

  7. Thanks for posting but where is the rest? That's about as nice a slide show as I've seen, How did you make it.

Luckily my frame and hog troughs were in much better shape, only a little patching required.

Is the front suspension Slick Street stuff and how do you like it. I'm considering that in the future.

    A great post

    Thanks, Bob

  8. Bob, found a couple of freezers and Ebay list of Avanti, nothing on Craig List at $6600 in Maryland, can you be more specific as to that Craig listing, thanks, Ken, Deltaville Va

    Ken

I have trouble posting CL listings when I use search tempest but here is a sample of what I found in 5 minutes.

The one I thought was in Maryland is in Newark, Del 1966 @ $6350

    More,

1963 in Saline, Mi $4500, 1978 in Wauconda, Il $4900, 1970 in Columbus, Oh $5500 Just the cheap ones.

Go to www.searchtempest.com and take it for a ride. Just type in cars & trucks, look for Avanti and enjoy.

  9. My 83 has the same setup as Bruce's an aftermarket pedal and Lokar cable. This is a good system.

The original linkage is a pretty complex setup and I tried hard to find a simple pedal assembly from an OEM setup with no success.

  10. Ken

I've been reading Ernie's writeup on his Avanti and didn't realize the extent of his improvements to his car.

I guess it might be worth your time to post what you mean by a basket case. A true basket case Avanti (63-64) will generally need hog troughs and frame replacement of repair. If you can do all the work yourself it will be less expensive than Ernie's but not by much.

My 83 was such a project but I started with a decent (10 Foot) body and interior and minor frame and hog trough issues. It started at $7500 and with all of the guile I could muster to keep costs down, I probably have $15,000 in it currently. It could use paint and interior but which I can do and may someday, but it is currently a driver with a darn stout SBC and 200R4 and 4:10 rear end.

If I add that to my cost plus hog troughs and frame issues, I'd be pretty close to Ernies.

But if you still want to continue to find a basket case Avanti try using Search Tempest to search Craigslist. You will find a $6600 or so basket case in the Maryland area and some others less expensive. When you try it it will ask if you want to use Auto Tempest which will allow you to narrow down the years. This app will search all the craigslist's in the US.

    Good Luck

For the record- I reregistered as Avanti83 after a few difficulties with BobS, my old name. You can see a couple of shots of what my investment has bought if you search under that name.
