There is usually a Pace Car, a back up Pace Car and a car for each driver (in the parade) that are also used by special people.  This would be a minimum of 35, again, none of your answers.

Good thought Gary, however, the correct answer to this trivia question is my #4...THIRTY (30).

This figure comes directly from the May, 1962 issue of 'The Studebaker Spotlight', Volume 24, a Studebaker Corporation news magazine.

Sorry Gary,:(  but if Studebaker Corp printed it, I'M GOING WITH IT!!:D

Hopefully, we are not taking what is in a magazine ad as final authority.  Thanks for the confirmation and support guys.

There is no Avanti ad in the April, 1970 issue of Esquire Magazine listing all the specs.

However, there is an article, Avanti Still Means Forward by Dan Jedlicka. There is no mention of the overall length.

This is from the book Avanti, by Thomas Bonsall.

This must have been one of the times that I inputted too quick.  I meant to say it was the two times that it was announced that Avanti production was ending in South Bend.  I still think that the second date was 8/15/87.

Mr. Fred K. Fox says it was 8/16/87 Gary.....Nuff said!!:D

    Gary is correct.

The announcement was August 15th, 1987.

Kind of odd that a metric speedometer wasn't written for 63R1728 on its P.O.!

I've seen P.O's for other Studebaker Avantis destined for Europe, and a metric speedo head is usually specified.

That information may be on the original production order.

What you posted is not a copy of that production order.

    If a 1963 Studebaker Avanti's P.O. shows "X89 AC-3311", what would that indicate?

    1 hour ago, mfg said:

Close enough Paul!:).....This option was listed on the Fleming Avanti (63R1728), and it simply means that it was factory equipped with a full-flow oil cartridge...(Weren't they all??)

X indicates it is not factory installed. Codes for seat belts for example are preceded by an X.

X89 AC-3311 means the factory furnished a replacement oil filter with the car.

The only Avanti I know of that left the factory with two-tone exterior paint was the official pace car Avanti  sent to Nassau, Bahamas for their speed weeks...It was painted Avanti Black with twin 10" wide bumper-to-bumper white racing stripes.

A '63 Lark Wagonaire was also sent there with a paint job identical to the pace car Avanti's.:o

Note the black wheels on both cars.

This may also be from the factory.

I am starting to work on my Avanti, S/N 63R-1659, and need to replace both of the window latches . According to the parts catalog, the latches and related parts were changed after  S/N 4879. Can I still get the parts to repair these latches? The bracket on the driver's side (illustration # 2124-40, part number 1350465W) is broken and needs replacing. I intend to replace  most of the hardware.

They calculated the weight of a full tank of gas into the shipping weight even though it wasn’t full when it was shipped to the dealership?

Shipping weights were for standard equipment only and did not include water, engine oil,  and gasoline.

    • My Avanti:1978 2731

My information is that Russ Ware, (Studebaker Parts) bought all of Valerie Hanson Rubber stock and is getting the mold made for these parts.

I talked to him at 602-995-5311.

These are supposed to be available this year sometime

Wouldn't it be nice if Regnalbob occasionally contributed something positive to 'AVANTI TRIVIA', instead of his constant 'nit picking' and seemingly endless criticisms?

With his wealth of Studebaker service letters he should be able to come up with MANY interesting trivia questions....but no, he'd rather sit back and leave the work

to somebody else.......and that, in my opinion, is really sad:(.........Bob, leave that SDC Forum mentality behind you!....Cheer up!:D..................Ed

You asked a question and I answered it. If you don't like the answers don't ask the questions.

You can not accept the fact the Service Letter does not support you answer so you go on the defensive and  try and make me the bad guy by posting the above comments.

That in my opinion is really sad.

That part number came from the Studebaker Forum, so it's really no surprise IF it's indeed wrong!:o.........(They had P/N 1332073, calling it the early black dovetail spring, and 1353929 the late yellow spring.)

Studebaker saw this problem and changed to a heavier spring....I see you don't understand problems a weak dovetail spring may create, so once again I politely suggest you stick to your service letters while I spin the wrenches!!:D

Again, check your facts. Do you have a parts book? 1353929 is not a dovetail spring, it is a latch lever return spring. Page 164.

You tell me I don't understand yet you don't even know what springs are correct.

My family was a Studebaker dealer and I have owned my Avanti for 54 years.

I certainly don't need you to tell me  how to work on an Avanti.

  13. 1 hour ago, mfg said:

Actually, the 'closest' correct answer would be #2, hood latch springs.:o

The dovetail bolts were loosening partly due to the weak p/n 1332073  springs.

As someone who has repaired Avantis for many years, I can easily understand how a dovetail spring with inadequate tension can amplify the above problem.

I'd politely suggest that you interpret your service letters to the best of your ability, meanwhile I'll stick with the reality of actually fixing these beauties!....Ed:)

Then how do you explain the fact that Studebaker did not mention this in the Service Letter and have dealers look for this possible problem as well.

Also part number 1332073 is not a dovetail spring, it is hood lock latch lever return spring used on Larks.

I would politely suggest you get your facts straight before posting.

Actually, the correct answer would be none of the above.

There is no mention of the hood latch springs contributing to the problem of the loose hood lock dovetail bolts.

According to Studebaker parts manuals and factory issued radio information sheets, ......?....... different "AC" numbered radios were offered for Avantis

    1) Two......2) Three......3) Four....or....4) Six

    Three,

    2- AM

    1- AM-FM

The Studebaker Avanti recall document ( 3/4/63--1963--7) was concerned with........?........

    1) Seat belt mounting.....2) Hood latch springs......3) Trunk light wiring......or.....4) Brake caliper bolts

    None of the above.

The Service Letter is for the repair of loose hood lock dovetail bolts.

Studebaker eliminated the hood center brace on 'square light' 1964 model Avantis because.......?.......

The brace was eliminated prior to 1964 square light Avantis. Late production 1963 round light Avantis do not have the brace.
