The family quite often referred to 'Herman' as 'Ray'.....
I'm a bit surprised a knowledgeable fellow like yourself didn't know that bobby!
Is this all you have?
I thought you would have a definitive answer.

What was the important event in the historic story of the Studebaker Avanti that occurred on 4/25/62?
4 minutes ago, mfg said:Not sure, but I suppose they could have snuck an R3 Avanti out there to see just what it could do!
(pre speed runs?)
Nothing happened on that date.
At the time only two prototype Avantis were built, one was in New York for the auto show and the second was in South Bend for the Shareholders Meeting for the unveiling on April 26, 1962.
There were no R-3s available at that time.

Thanks, I appreciate that...bobby usually does need a bit of clarification!
Just like I had to clarify for you in Avanti Record that the #9 Avanti did not run 178.50 mph at Bonneville.
Now clarify this.
Since Nate Altman did not have a brother Ray how did this transaction occur?
Nate had two brothers Arnold D. and Herman S. Altman.

So, you don't feel the Altman family was connected with Avanti Motors?
You really need to brush up on your Avanti history Bobby!!!
Don't you see something wrong with the details?
You need to brush up on your Avanti history Eddy.

Yes, maybe 2.
The first is confirmed and the second is not confirmed.

1) R5651......2) R5652......3) R5653..... or.....4) None of these
None of these.
EX-2943 was destroyed by fire.

When an R3 powered Studebaker Avanti (#9) reached a speed of 178.5 MPH at Bonneville in 1963, it was part of a .......?...... mile record run...(this speed recorded on return run)
1)Ten....2) Twenty.....3) Forty......or......4) Fifty
That is incorrect.
Granatelli drove Avanti #9 at Bonneville in 1963 and set all of the records below verified by USAC.

Do I need to block you again Bob?
When you start being respectful and ask questions politely,THEN I will answer you.
No need to answer, everyone knows the Avanti has an air filter like the 63 Larks.

Now that you understand do you agree an Avanti has an air filter like the 1963 Larks?

Yes or no to the question I asked.

PS...while the removable Lark filter screen isn't up to modern cabin filter standards, it's, 'sort of' the same idea...and Avantis did not have it!
3 hours ago, mfg said:Haven't ever heard "climatizer" used in reference to Stude Avanti heater/defroster units..but that's OK, I understand what you mean!
Really? Maybe you need to read Avanti literature.
Climatizer is listed as standard equipment.
Both the parts catalog and shop manual have sections on the Climatizer.
The shop manual has directions on how to service the air filter.
Now that you understand do you agree an Avanti has an air filter like the 1963 Larks?

Avantis do have an air filter for the Climatizer.

Bob. You must have had an unbelievably nice Avanti. Was it restored back then or really kept up? Do you remember what was bad about Elmer”s car that would lose points?
I have owned the Avanti since 1965. It was repainted in 1966 because of defects in the factory paint. Other than replacing maintenance items it is mostly original with less than 29,000 miles.
Without seeing the judging form I have no idea as to why he lost points.
18 hours ago, mfg said:Odd that an Avanti with 'mag' wheels installed would place ahead of a completely stock model...I agree that having cars judged can lead to ulcers!!
This was before changes were made and more classes were added.
Cars entered in the stock class after the change lost 4 points for custom wheels.
This happened to me in 1976 at the SDC International Meet in Indianapolis. 194 out of 200 minus 4 for the Cragar wheels for total of 190.

Yes, Elmer is correct and Factoryville, Pa also hits the right note. Hard to believe a new Avanti only gets a second place at a national meet. Hell, his car was what every restored car is trying to be. I’ve seen this same thing before though. That’s one reason I never would bother having a car judged.
Anybody know what happened to Elmer or the car?
My Avanti got first place.

I have reprints of two articles that Avant Motors used for promotional hand outs.
First is an article from the August, 1966 issue of Road & Track Magazine, a road test of the 1966 Avanti.
They state that the Avanti gets a 30 mile road test.
The second article is from the September, 1972 issue of Quality Management & Engineering.
They state that the Avanti gets road tested between 150 & 250 miles.
Avanti Newsletter #30, 1976 article has 250 miles.
Looks like Dan Booth ends all the confusion.

The Avanti like other Studebaker models had disposable thin plastic covers installed at the factory to protect the seats.
These were not the thick clear plastic covers used for furniture.
The covers were not removed until we delivered the car to the customer or the car was used for showroom display.
