Am not in North Jersey, but a couple of hours south -- Turmont, Maryland. I have only recently decided to sell my 74 Avanti II, all original except for a repaint in the 1990s. Am still writing up a description and pondering asking price, but thought I would respond to your post.

'Hogtroughs' in stainless steel from Classic Enterprises have been installed in my Avanti II. The final riveting of the End Caps being completed only recently; this final job being completed by a friend, not me. As we are now looking at re-placing the Body back on the rejuvenated Frame I wanted to check the breed of the bolts that will secure the Frame to the Hogtroughs.... These are not UNF like the originals, but are in fact all 3/8" UNC. No Problem there, I just wanted to confirm. On checking from the front to the rear I come to the last hole- the one that rests on the little 'Tag' on the side of the Rear Spring mounting fixture and found NO CAPTIVE NUT in the Hogtrough. Thinking I might have a dud box I rolled over to the left side of the Avanti to check the same and once again- no captive nut welded in there. I checked my reference photos from waaay back when I shipped them here and sure 'nuff.... no nut. The solution is to drill rivets, remove the endcaps weld in a 3/8'UNC nut, of course, but I'd really like to figure out whether I've boobed or has somebody at the factory. Anybody got feedback on these issue 😕? See photos with red circles...

Well Gunslinger, you’re ’right on the money’ when you mentioned the rather elaborate dual snorkel L69 air cleaner assy, with its twin intake hoses leading down over the front tires to left & right grills installed in the valance panel…. a dead give away at a glance! Well done!
-
Is this car still available?
-
Been looking at them. A bit confusing but thx for the tip!
-
While this may not pertain to an Avanti…the LG4 had a single snorkel air cleaner while the L69 had a dual snorkel. The LG4 also had a 2” exhaust manifold outlet while the L69 had 2 1/4” manifold outlets. There were internal differences such as the cam and a different advance curve but you can’t see that. Getting the carburetor numbers and looking them up should help as well.

Answer…. ‘Probably’ #3…. Mr. Gene Winfield!
-
What is a quick visual way to determine if a stock 1984 Avanti is equipped with either a LG4 305 engine or the more powerful L69 305 engine? (without checking engine code numbers)
-
1984 Avanti ‘Touring Coupes’ were available in …..?….. special exterior colors. 1) Three….. 2) Four…3) Five….or….4) Six

I have R4551, It has the BKV trim option with round knobs. I understand the BKV trim was where Stude phased in the running changes for 64 models.

It's a shame that we are all dealing with quality issues on vendor parts. If our company did that, we'd pay for return shipping and give a refund or send out a replacement part. Perhaps we need a Vendor Scoring section on the forums?

Answer…. #3… The R3 engine that was previously raced in the ‘Studependous’ drag race ‘60 Lark!
-
Good thought Nels… but the answer would be found in one of the four (now 3!) above.
-
Now, what do you do about the lead cable seal on the main bolts?
-
The Cadillac powered Avanti that was probably destined to be an R4 ac prototype? Whoops! Sorry, too late a serial number.
-
Yes, a good man…. Paul sold me different NOS Avanti items over the years at very fair prices… and was certainly thinking ahead when he purchased and brought back to the U.S. the two still crated R3 and R4 Paxton built Studebaker engines.

Yeah. Wifey will be available to hear bubbles and hiss. I was going to squirt a little PB Blaster in the line first and wait a few before air'ing it up. Thanks ...and I understand deteriorating... at 72. Dan O'

Yes, gas level sensor is old style float type (probably cork… which can deteriorate with age … like me!) 10 lbs should be plenty… have someone listen for air bubbles at fuel inlet….Ed

I did everything You recommend.. cept blow out and carb inlet filter. Will blow it out tomorrow, That makes some sense to me. The '63' Repair manual said it' gravity feed to the engine pump. Tank sits way higher than the engine pump. Thus needing the rubber line crimped off at the inlet to the pump... Otherwise gas spills out..Had that line off before and not even a drip... So the gas level sensor is not tied into the system?? (it needs replaced anyways) What air psi do You think I should use? Thinking about 10 lbs. Oh, and thanks Bro-Man, for the feedback.. It's reassuring to what I'm doing.

That R4 engine belonged to the late, lamented Paul Johnson.
