2) Fawn/black

If I don't get it this time I'll get it next time!

Ha ha! You got it!…. There are a few glimpses of the interior of the Due Cento in the video “Bonneville Record Breaker”.

Nelson is correct, the Due Cento was built with Fawn interior with black carpet.

The shots of the interior are from the #8 Avanti and not the Due Cento.

The interior shot also shows a finished dash with windshield mounted mirror which the Due Cento did not have.

My understanding was that the Avanti which set 29 speed records at Bonneville in ‘62 became the Due Cento for ‘63…. No?

So, EX2942 was/is the number 8 car, or the Due Cento?

The car pictured looks like it has a solid Fawn interior, with a black carpet (a combination never in production).  I'll note that a production '63 Avanti with Fawn/Elk interior would have a solid black carpet.

Gee, I don’t know about that Dwight.. I’ve seen more than one ‘Avanti Gold’ ‘63 Avanti with Fawn/Elk interior and ‘salt ‘n pepper carpeting… I actually owned one!

As far as EX 2942 goes, If that Avanti indeed became the ‘ Due Cento’ in 1963, there is an issue… since  in the ‘Bonneville Record Breaker’ color film, the car is clearly shown with a Fawn/ Black interior!

Avanti Red used Black carpet only with the Fawn & Elk interior.

There is no issue, the Avanti with the Black interior is not the Due Cento.

In the film there are 2 Red Avantis, the Due Cento and #8 (63R-1014).

The Due Cento can be seen with the door open and the Fawn door panel. Later a front end shot with the windshield being cleaned shows the lack of a hood ornament and non stock headlights and parking lights. A later shot shows the large mirror mounted on the dash.

The other Avanti is the #8 car with hood ornament, stock lights, antenna, production dash with mirror on windshield and Fawn & Black interior.

I believe that Bob’s confusion stems from  the fact that both the #8 and the Due Cento were finished in ‘Avanti Red’.

All I know is that if the Avanti that set the 29 International speed records at Bonneville in ‘62 was later converted into what became the Due Cento, It definitely had a Fawn/Black interior in ‘62.

We musn’t ignore the fact that all these ‘EX’ Avantis had many changes made to them before being sold off!….Ed

At least some of the original prototype Avantis had the rear view mirror mounted on a ball socket on the dash...production models had the mirror mounted on the windshield.

Back in the early '70s I went to see the late Roger Penn (who was an Avanti dealer) about a turquoise '63 Avanti R-1 he had for sale.  I distinctly remembered it had the mirror mounted on the dash like a '61 Chrysler my dad used to own.  The car had no power anything...just a base car with an automatic transmission.  I liked the car but simply couldn't swing the money...poor college student and all that.  It wasn't until a few years later when I did buy a '63 and started learning about Avanti history that I realized the car Roger Penn had to sell was a prototype.  Many years later in the Studebaker swap meet at York, PA I ran into Dr. Penn and talked to him about that car.  He had no idea it was a prototype.  He said after I was unable to buy the car he said he had a sunroof installed in it.

It would be wonderful if that Avanti has survived… The sun roof install would certainly narrow the field!

You are the one that is confused by the two Red Avantis.

You don't seem to know the difference between EX-2942 and the #8 Avanti.

In the video it is plain to see the production Avanti with the Black interior is the #8 Avanti (63R-1014) and not EX-2942 with the Fawn interior.

I've no idea if that car still exists...I never did know the serial number.  As I said...it wasn't until maybe the later '70s that I realized only prototypes had the mirror mounted on the dash and Dr. Penn was unaware of it as well.  It was Avanti Turquoise when I looked at it but I've no idea whether it was originally Turquoise when it left South Bend.

If someone had the time and energy to check the current whereabouts and ownership of those cars using the SDC or AOAI owners books it might be determined if that car still exists, is gone or simply unknown status.  It won't be me looking..."I'm Retired...Go Around Me".

Bonneville Avanti #8 (63R-1014) was a few miles from where I lived before relocating.  It sat there in a shop for some years due to a dispute of some kind between the owner and shop owner.  It had a genuine R3 engine on a stand by the car but not the R3 it used at Bonneville.  I took many pics of it at the shop...eventually I connected the current owner of the car with the former owner.  It's been restored since then.

The car definitely had a black interior and still had the roll cage installed for speed runs.
