Assistance in determining the value of my 69

Hi.

I have not been on this forum for a long time. Been holding onto my 69 Avanti II for about 20 years.

At this point I just don't think I'm ever going to put the money into it.

The car kinda has a sad story, it was my grandmother's and someone convinced her to put it in their name and that they would sell it for her. They proceeded to drive it around and someone hit it, they got a settlement, kept it, and got a questionable repair job before I was able to get it from them. Anyway, that is the story.

It has 75k original miles. It needs all the stuff you would expect after mostly sitting that long but has been garaged.

Brakes, steering hoses, radiator, engine probably needs a gasket refresh. I've started it up once and a while and basically how I have found the radiator issue. 

Of course the damage has to be considered in the value.

Appreciate any help or insight on what value is left in the car.

Wow, I have no clue on what the value would be, but the photos show a LOT of needed repairs and time investment. You might just list it on some car site, or like Craig's list, Market Place, or even Ebay and let the market tell you what it is going to sell for.

The car looks like a worthwhile project for someone with the skills and who is willing to put a lot of sweat equity into it.  It looks to have a good frame and hog troughs and those are important positives.  The dash looks good as does the rest of the interior.  Changing to a more acceptable color interior would be possible and desirable.

I suspect that the body should be stripped to bare fiberglass because of the shoddy paint job.  We don't know what is under the paint.  Awful fiberglass repairs should be undone and redone properly.  The engine needs to be fixed, along with the brakes, exhaust, suspension, (possibly) wiring harness, etc.

As to value my WAG is $5000 to $9000.  Others on the Forum who buy & sell these things will have a better feel for the market value than I.

Don't know the value, looks like a lot of work. I do like the interior as I have the same. Must have been popular in '69.

I am very interested in the routing of the belts. Got confused with the ones that I have. Do you have a picture?

Interesting that the mirror is a low mount on a 69. Mike

Considering that most...if not all...Avanti Motors employees were former Studebaker employees that assembled the Avanti it's not surprising that some would simply have continued doing what they did for Studebaker.  

It's always possible it's a leftover Studebaker windshield with the mirror already mounted or a used replacement windshield installed later.

I think Dwight is right though, it looks like a worthwhile project for the right person. Finding the right person might be tough. Someone with the skills to do the bulk of the work themselves that wants an Avanti would be the ticket.  I think it’s pretty tough these days to buy any classic with the thought of restoring it and then making money on it.

Your Grandmother's car is worthy of a darned good cleanup before you put it out for sale- but frankly I hope you decide to keep it if you can.  A spruce up will put more dough in your pocket for very little '$'. Avanti II's are still rare cars by any standpoint and as per the chart I've uploaded, appear to be worth good money. Of note- yours is of pre-Catalytic Converter era, which is a desirable issue in my opinion. My own 1982 Avanti II was advertised for $6000 (got it for less) in 2015 showing a beautiful interior and excellent body but eroding rear Frame and only vestigial hogtroughs. I would be glad to buy it for $9,000 today.

Mine has a new Frame being finalised at this time in case you're wondering, and I'm absolutely sure it's worth the work. They didn't make many of 'em !  Spit polish the thing and ask for $10K.

It has been a long time and it just doesn't seem like I'm going to put the money into it as much as I would like to. I'm not really interested in putting the money and work to raise the value but I would have liked to just for a project. Doesn't seem like that is where our money will ever end up going as even doing the work myself. It is a pretty hard decision for me.

After the info that has been provided here I might go for about 7K

I'll definitely at least do a cleanup on it.

I’ve put some dumb money into things that had sentimental value, and there are folks who would take on a project just to have something to work on without any intent on making money. Sounds like you are aware of what you are getting into so that’s a plus. Good luck. Mike
