aardvark Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 I saw this Pix on Facebook, and it is SOOO tempting to do one of these. I would NEVER cut up my '63' since it's 99.5% stock and that would be a Butchering.. But maybe there's a Project in my future.

Excepting that ‘park bench’ bolted to the rear deck, it does look pretty nice! Edited April 9 by mfg Spell.
aardvark Posted April 9 Author Report Posted April 9 Yeah, I'm not much for the metal structured fin or front air dam either., but would rather see a creative painted and well formed metal made structure. But the stance, wheels, tires and fenders are quite nice. I had been considering my '63' as a daily driver (cept winter and salted roads) I have my concerns doing so with a stock vehicle as this one is. BUT... To take a post '64' with a Chev V-8, and buying one for around $12k in need of resto, would leave a lot of financial room for modding up something like this...... My '63 would easily sell for around $40k... leaving a lot of financial room to turn out something like this. Bet it could be done for about another $10-12k out of pocket.

I acknowledge that owners can modify their cars in any way that makes them happy. But, to me, the flares and spoilers are visual blight. The Avanti broke world speed records without spoilers and wider wheels over 60 years ago. What's the point other than "Look what I can do"? Edited April 10 by psdenno
regnalbob Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 Look closely at the picture. Is it a real Avanti or AI generated?
Mark63Avanti Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 Looks AI generated to me. but if you squint with one eye you can get an idea of what a two seater Avanti could have resembled...

ronmanfredi Posted April 10 Report Posted April 10 This particular AI generated wide body car is a fun take on alternative style. It’s extremely wide wheel base width and spoilers are interesting for sure. In fact I have plans to make my own front and rear fiberglass spoilers plus a radically modified hood to increase airflow in the engine compartment on the R2 that I’m doing a restomod restoration on. I won’t be modifying the wheel base specs and will be using the slightly modified newly rebuilt R2 engine / transmission. There will be body modifications in addition to the spoilers. The interior mods are nearing completion as far as what can be done prior to a complete body strip and paint and will surprise many. For me, this is an exercise of do it myself creation, improvement and change. For many, it will be rad. For the purists, whom I respect and support completely, they may not approve, but most likely will be impressed.
aardvark Posted April 10 Author Report Posted April 10 My reason for posting the Pix really doesn't matter if it's a AI Gen or not. The concept is totally do-able and really not a stretch. Wide Body Kits,, basically the fender flares are not cost prohibitive and are available in fiberglass... A easy thing to adapt to our already fiberglass cars.. Then wheels and tires and about a 3" drop. Might as well use new drop spindles and the likes for the rear. An easy project overall. Ron.. That Pix is way too extreme and a flared mess. Cut em in half as far as depth and Ya got something.

Extremely nice and quite complicated body modifications performed on this ‘63 Stude Avanti… Jim Bunting truly is a craftsman! Considering this Avanti two seater is an R2 four speed car, it must go like a rocket with a couple hundred pounds of ‘body’ removed from it! GREAT CAR!!!!!
aardvark Posted April 13 Author Report Posted April 13 (edited) So on the ''Vehicles for sale'' section... a '73' was listed. I bought it this past weekend It WILL become a derivative of that Photo.... I expect to do this for around $10k. Edited April 13 by aardvark
64Avanti Posted Monday at 04:56 AM Report Posted Monday at 04:56 AM There is a clay model of the Avanti done during development with fender flares.
aardvark Posted Monday at 08:55 AM Author Report Posted Monday at 08:55 AM Interesting.. I would love to see pix's of that.

Gunslinger Posted yesterday at 12:14 AM Report Posted yesterday at 12:14 AM The original flared fender design was removed for both cost and ease of production reasons.

Gunslinger Posted 14 hours ago Report Posted 14 hours ago I agree...it's a much cleaner design without the flares. The Avanti body has always been remarkably clean of extraneous add-ons...and better off for it.
aardvark Posted 2 hours ago Author Report Posted 2 hours ago (edited) Reg... Thanks for posting that I've been in the Design and Architecture business now for 48 years with a degree minor in art. Before that I was designing cars and Houses at age 12. As soon as I could hold a crayon and a pencil I was at it. I also at age 12 spent time in the Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn Mi. in their Design Labs around clay models and drafting tables.. (before computers) I even had a few design ideas incorporated by Ford. Does that give me some clout as a design expert? You decide! Interesting that the original Avanti designers were thinking on those terms. The bottom line is the changes are a matter of opinion and of so little consequence that it hardly matters. I prefer the flares and love to see them on Porsches and other fine cars. It's a way to extend fenders to accommodate wider rubber and rims (and to me) for a tasteful appearance. One might say the hood scoop is cutting into the smoothness of the body lines,, and what is with those square headlights? Then the Gov't mandated picnic table bumpers, but Avanti was tasteful in how they handled that (I'm sure they would have preferred not to do that.). So whether Your preference or not, I'm going that direction. Also I'll be adding a GTO Judge type tail fin with the downturned ends. Front Airdam.I'm undecided as of yet. My reason for the flares is basic. I want to drop the suspension ~3" and in doing so, things need widened out...especially with very wide rims and rubber. Yes I could tub the car, but that goes against handling excellence where a wider platform is better for grip in curves. My '63' R2 will remain untouched out of respect for it's originality,.... but the '73' is a total project and all bets are off. So... to each their own. For reference again, the pix I supplied earlier.. Looks better than the sketch and clay model shown Edited 1 hour ago by aardvark
