murph the surf Posted Saturday at 03:29 PM Report Posted Saturday at 03:29 PM (edited) During the Studebaker strike of 1962, Gloyd Richards was involved in an altercation with Studebaker President Sherwood Egbert as Mr. Egbert rightfully attempted to cross a picket line during the critical development time for the Studebaker Avanti. What was Mr. Richards' position within Studebaker-Packard, and what was his ultimate fate with the company ??? Edited Saturday at 03:39 PM by murph the surf
mfg Posted Saturday at 04:46 PM Report Posted Saturday at 04:46 PM I’m a union guy… however, it’s difficult to understand why the South Bend local would be pushing so hard for increased benefits, when it had to be SO clear at that time that Studebaker Corporation was on such thin ice!

Have to agree, don't think that was the most strategic move on the part of Local 5 at that time...
mfg Posted Saturday at 05:11 PM Report Posted Saturday at 05:11 PM I wonder if that’s Sherwood inside the Mercedes?…..I’ve read that he would show up in one occasionally!
regnalbob Posted Saturday at 05:32 PM Report Posted Saturday at 05:32 PM He was a truck driver and was fired.

Zedman Posted Monday at 03:51 AM Report Posted Monday at 03:51 AM Egbert, as a former Marine, strikes me as the sort of man that wouldn't want to be seen as being a 'crybaby' by ordering that employee dismissed. I know nothing of his personality in actual fact- he just looks to me like a real no nonsense type of fellow.... Out of interest, does anybody have any inside info on how Sherwood Egbert rolled?

Seeing factual documentation is much fairer to the accused than accepting the word of a man known to be a ‘loose cannon’, seldom backing up his comments.
Nelson Posted Monday at 08:41 AM Report Posted Monday at 08:41 AM Egbert was fingerprinted at the police station and booked I assume.
mfg Posted Monday at 03:34 PM Report Posted Monday at 03:34 PM Sherwood Egbert definitely had a lot on his mind at the time….. His health, Trying to ‘right’ a sinking ship, Union problems, Etc.

Murph asked a question and I answered it from the information in the Lamberti Papers. A question that you were unable to answer. No need for me to provide any documentation since I did not ask the question. Why do you find it necessary to make childish comments about me?
