Simplification and reliability.  The Granatellis found a primary reason for failure was lack of uniformity of the planetary balls and tightened quality control to improve reliability.

Definitely true, however I believe they had a stronger motivation!

ANSWER (well, opinion)  The Granatellis wanted to sell superchargers, and with all the compact cars being introduced by various manufacturers in the early sixties they realized the smaller engines in these compacts would really benefit from forced induction....Problem was, the vari-speed McCulloch design was simply too large...thus the 'SN' (short nose) Paxton was designed and introduced..and it turned out to be quite a success.
