mfg
Of the Studebaker avanti chromed engine parts, which was normally the first piece to suffer 'chrome failure' or deterioration ?
Gunslinger
I would say the valley pan.
mfg
That would probably be the SECOND Avanti chromed engine part on the 'soon to fail' list.....but not #1!!
Geoff
I would hazard two guesses. My first guess is valve covers; my second guess is breather caps.
mfg
Actually Geoff, Factory chromed Avanti valve covers and breather caps have, in most cases, stood the test of time fairly well. (In my opinion!) HINT....I'm speaking of a part that started to fail SOON after the car was built!
Gunslinger
I was thinking the oil dipstick, but I've seen a lot of air cleaners that look like crap.
brad
I would also say the air cleaner housings. Especially the R1s Edited February 26, 2015 by brad
Geoff
Oh, how about the electronics shield? Covering the coil, et al.
Silverplate
I did not think valley pans were chrome? How about spark plug shields? Edited February 26, 2015 by Silverplate
plwindish
My round eyed 64 had a chrome valley cover. My vote for most easily rusted chrome part would be the R1 air cleaner cover.
regnalbob
The R-2 carburetor air bonnet.
Gunslinger
I did not think valley pans were chrome? How about spark plug shields? Early valley covers were chromed. The spark plug shields and radio frequency interference covers were stainless steel, not chromed.
mfg
Everyone here came up with solid ideas and good answers....But, in my opinion anyway, Regnalbob 'nailed it' with the R2 CARB BONNET. Factory chrome practically 'jumped' off of those things in very short order!!
