  1. And ethanol fuel will also slowly attack the plastic floats in replacement sending units. A replacement sending unit I installed in the mid-1990s failed last year when the alcohol in our modern gasoline wore away at the edges where the float pivots on the sending unit arm. When the hole got big enough, fuel filled the inside of the float and began sending wrong fuel level readings to the gauge.

If your sending unit fails, and the electronic parts at the top of the sending unit check out in good shape, you can remove the old float and solder a brass carburetor float to the sending unit arm.

  2. And before this detail was published in Automobile Quarterly, author Patrick Foster, learned of the Ferrari connection from a 2005 or 2006 article in Avanti Magazine, from information given from the Ferrari Club magazine, Forza.

By the way, Raymond Loewy like Ferrari too... Raymond is in the light jacket left of center in this circa-1956 photo in southern California.

  3. I am planning on printing this, since 400 pages is a lot to keep and reference in a PDF file, whether it is on a smart phone or tablet. Although PDFs are easy to use to search for terms or items in the file, the file would be quite large. I am working to have the manual printed and will be made available to any AOAI member at a nominal cost.

  4. Greg prince, together with others, has been working on a huge authenticity manual for 1963-64 Avantis. It is ready for proofing and was last waiting for approval from AOAI board member Steve James to send out electronically for further proofing and feedback. When released, the book will be 400 pages of color images and text covering every aspect of the Avanti. Steve has some health problems earlier, and I figure that once he is recovered well enough, we'll get back to final proofing and making arrangement for printing.

  5. False. The Chicagoland AOAI chapter's newsletter is "Avantian". The original Virginia/DC National chapter, one of the founding AOAI chapters, had the Avanti Arrow name for their newsletter. The Avanti Arrow is now the name of the Missouri/Illinois Gateway Chapter's newsletter, since the mid-1990s.

  6. False.... Studebaker Avanti production ended in late December 1963. Most 1963 models used a clear lens with a second amber lens behind it; later '64 production in early 1963 went to a full metal turn signal housing that used a single amber lens.
