Probably was Sherwood Egbert, in an effort to boost performance levels for their car that was supposed to bring buyers to showrooms.

False. There is not supposedly room for the overdrive manual transmission. The transmission's solenoid on the driver's side would hit the Avanti X-frame. I think some may have installed this transmission, but would need to modify the frame.
This is why only a straight 3-speed was an option on Avantis. Only 67 Avantis in 1963-64 came with 3-speed non-overdrive transmissions -- all R1's. It was not available with an R2 engine.

I would first check and insure that the grounds are good for all the dash lights and gauges in general. Otherwise, stay tuned for the next issue of Avanti Magazine which will have a great article for changing your original dash lights to red LEDs. Everything still looks stock but your gauges will be illuminated like never before!
Issue 167 will be going to press at the end of this week and should be in the mail by the end of this month.

It sounds like the bushings at the bottom or sides of the shifter are worn. I am assuming that you still use the original shifter, which was made by Ansen... same as what Chevrolet used at the time too.

Yes, of course they had to machine the place on the passenger side of the block for the oil filter base, with passages to the oil gallery. And on R-series engines, the oil drain back hole was enlarged under the lifter cover.

Actually, both are correct. Taliente was the name given by architect Albert Frey, but later was known also as Tierre Caliente.
-
Sure... this is an easy one: Taliente. the home was designed in 1946-1947 by famed architect Albert Frey.

False... Brad is correct. They were made by Alcoa.

True.... the cowl panel often cracks in front of the passenger side wiper pivot. (They do also crack on top of the finders, behind the wheel wells too.)

The building was sold a couple of years ago, and the front looks different. The June 2009 image attached looks much like it did during the Avanti days in Cancun. The building today in the attached image has a slightly different look.
The mailing address of the plant was located at Boulevard Luis Donaldo Colosio KM 11.6,

The answer is TRUE!!!, but with a qualification for a THIRD script. Studebaker had two Avanti scripts, a pre-production version and then the final version that is on all 1963-64 models. But early clay models and possible the first full scale prototype has "Studebaker" script on the nose panel.
The attached photo is proof of a very early prototype with Raymond Loewy in the driver's seat in a Studebaker factory building. Note the "Studebaker" script on the nose panel. A FOURTH Avanti script style was done later by Black.

To make it easier to find all forum posts, and look through all the Trivia topics in one place, I created a new Trivia Forum in the General Discussion section of our AOAI forum. Hope this helps to categorize the Avanti trivia posts in one place.

AOAI member Nick Berger picked up the rest of the LA/Gilmore farmers market T shirts from last year that were made for the Avanti 50th yesterday. He has a small, a medium and a large that i can sell if anyone is interested. $25 plus whatever shipping cost.
Here is a photo of the t-shirt which AOAI California member Nick Berger has available in limited quantities from last year's Gilmore Heritage concours d'elegance, which feature the Avanti. posted below is an image of the t-shirt from Nick. Click on the thumbnail for a larger view.
Please contact him for more information through the Avanti Yahoogroup forum at avanti@yahoogroups.com

Warren, not sure how you were trying to upload the picture of your steering wheel. I copied your photo from the link you gave, then I edited your post and added the picture. One think I notice is that Facebook must have reduced your photo to 66kb. Maybe that made a difference?

Jack, I believe that at least one prototype 340 engine was running in a Lark-type car. Several years ago, SASCO owner Dennis Lambert was telling me and a friend the story that he actually was given a ride in a Lark type vehicle with the prototype engine. He related that it sounded better and stronger than any 289 Studebaker engine and pulled stronger and faster than any Avanti, even the R2 or R3 engines. There was no supercharger either. He said that there was at least the one, but I think that there probably were a few others that were built. I think most were disposed of at the bottom of the pit at their foundry.

It will be the first Avanti to be on the lawn at Amelia Island.

Seems like a hight price, but this is a survivor car that is as original as any car can be after 50+ years. Yes, it would take quite a bit of maintenance and updates to get it in driving condition, but probably would be worth it as a very low mileage survivor.
This was featured in 2012 in Avanti Magazine while still on display at the Los Angeles Museum of Art.

Eric, I'm glad to hear that you have your dad's Avanti and are keeping the tradition alive! You might also consider joining the AOAI and receiving the color quarterly magazine. We have a lot of features, including technical articles and also stories on past history of member's Avantis.
And like Bruce already mentioned, our national meet this summer will be fairly close to you, in Dover, Delaware. You can join the AOAI online at http://aoai.org/shop New memberships for the first year are just $19.95.

You can get the speckled carpet material from SMC Auto Fabrics in Oregon. Here is their website to the "Tuxedo" style carpet page, which is the name for the speckled carpet that our Avantis use.
http://www.smsautofabrics.com/products/carpet.php
Click on their sample link and they will send you a sample of the material. They can make up the carpet sets for our cars too, and their prices are very good.

The information is in the last two Avanti Magazine issues.
Here are the pages in PDF form with registration information, hotels and contact information.

Yes, I updated the forum software version and cleaned up the folders where avatars and other images are stored. It was this internal link that was corrupted and the cause of missing avatars.
In addition, it is again possible to post photos to each topic or forum reply. That same internal link was previously keeping images from being uploaded with new posts.

Sorry, I should have further qualified my answer above. While the frames are similar, the Lark floor is more flat, with just a low transmission hump. The Avanti has a much deeper transmission hump and this, more than the frame would interfere with the transmission solenoid.
