  1. I received mine today as well. I can't imagine the effort and research that went into this.

My only complaint is not with the book itself...the postal service didn't treat it properly...the mailing container was ripped and about 15-20% of it got wet and discolored. It was sent Priority Mail which includes insurance. Any chance I can get some of my investment back?

You should be able to put a claim through your post office, as long as you can show them the packaging.

  2. Ischuc:

    When can I expect delivery?

I'm wearing a rut in the driveway going to the mailbox, as I sent a check the day I received the "Avanti Magazine" !!

If you mailed your check to the Arizona address in the magazine, all preorders were mailed yesterday, June 20, the same day we received books from the printer. All orders are sent priority mail.

  3. The 1963 & 1964 Studebaker Avanti Authenticity Manual is finally completed. It has been eagerly anticipated since it was previewed at the 2015 International Meet. Order your copy today with free shipping.

This 352 page, full-color book was compiled to essentially show how Studebaker factory workers assembled the Avanti automobile. Full-color photographs and descriptions show the correct parts and locations under the hood, chassis, interior colors and engine assembles as the cars came from the factory.

Almost every page contains large and clear color photographs to show how parts were assembled, decals placed and the factory placement of all hoses, clamps and accessories.

If you're restoring an original Studebaker Avanti, this book is essential to creating a concours-winning automobile.

  4. Well, the Avanti is now in the paint shop. They will be removing the front windshield and rear window (thanks for the advice on my other post). I now need an emission decal as mine got water logged and looks like crap. Does anyone know where I could source one? I would even like a very good reproduction that I could create my own (in vinyl or?). attachicon.gif20160318_104258.jpg

Note the emissions decal, but Avanti Magazine classified is advertising exact reproductions of the Avanti Motors driver's door sticker, silver foil with black printing.

  5. Mike, It is a Borg Warner Powershift (cast iron case) and should be what was used in the Avanti.

the driveshaft, like Lou said, looks like someone built up something to work. I would be wary about using it. The ends behind the U-joints don't look correct and look like someone added tubing to get the right length.

There is a place near our shop where I had a couple of driveshafts made and they are very reasonable priced. Contact me offline or by my email next week when I get home and I can get you the correct numbers to get one made for you. They are close to your work too, just a little north of our shop.

  6. Mike,

The water pump manifold is indeed an R-series part. the pipe you see at the top is for the heater hose to be attached, coming from the heater core.

The third photo with the spark plug wires coming from a round plastic ring looks like it was used for an aftermarket distributor, probably from a Mallory distributor. It is not stock for a Studebaker engine, but was sold back in the day for a better performance ignition system.

The black plate you have hanging is not a Studebaker or Avanti part. It looks like a later model GM alternator bracket.

Any more questions? You know where to find me or Brad.

  7. But referring to the exhaust cutouts.... Raymond Loewy had two handles on the console of the 1963 Avanti he kept at his Palm Springs home. Pull out on each cable, and his exhaust would switch to open exhausts, bypassing his mufflers.

  8. After about 40 years of silence, Avanti R5089, the first of nine production R3 Avantis, comes to life. Enjoy these three short videos. More fine tuning will take place in the coming days, and now, the rest of the restoration can continue, ie: interior, glass and trim. See Avanti Magazine Fall/Winter 2015 (Issue 172), page 36-37 for more details of this historically significant Studebaker Avanti.

Brad Bez worked this week to check the engine and wiring for Randy Rapp's Avanti.

The first production Studebaker Avanti gets tuned and run-in to break in the new cam and lifters after a 40-year hibernation.

  9. No... the carpet at the bottom of the door panels should be the same as the interior carpet on the floors. 1963 Avanti models have the speckled carpet, fawn or elk and black; red & black; turquoise & black; or Orange & black.

Beginning with all 1964 models, carpets were all one color.

This is contained in the Avanti production data book sold by the Studebaker National Museum, and will also be noted in the forthcoming Avanti Authenticity Manual.

  10. Don't keep the Airtex pump on the car. It will probably eventually leak engine oil out of the vent on top of the fuel pump, and/or from the end of the pump arm pin. You'll probably eventually have a gas leak with this too.

Better to use one of the real Carter performance fuel pumps sold by several of our Studebaker vendors. They are the same brand as originally equipped and will hold up for many miles. They are also compatible with the ethanol found on todays fuel.
