  1. That is how my Avanti wheels were cleaned and stripped, by a company that does powdercoating near the airport, off of I-170. They thermo-stripped them then powdercoated them.

But the company I use now, like Brad mentioned, is about a 1/2 mile from the his shop. very good prices too. Stop in some day and I'll bring you there.

  2. Started on repairing the brakes and found more problems so decided to rebuild the front end first. The coil spring was broken. Had to cut grind the shock to remove it. Rotors show no wear or sign of an turn down cut.

Can someone fix the photo posting problems of this forum.

Tom, see if you can post more of your photos to some of your previous posts... I figured out how to increase the size of images to post to the forum, and you should be able to post images up to 15mb file sizes. Try to keep the megabytes as small as possible, which makes for quick load times.

    Hopefully this should work better!

  3. After Mr. Hora, whom I believe was President of the AOAI at the time, acquired "Bonneville 9" from the Granatellis, it amazes me he had the foresight to have them bring that car back to 'as raced' condition.

I'll bet almost any other purchaser of that Avanti would have had the exterior numbers removed, and simply made a 'hot' street car out of it.......and chances are it would have been wrecked...probably no longer even existing!

SUPER KUDOS to Mr. John Hora for his foresight and long term preservation of this especially significant Studebaker Avanti!!!

when John Hora bought the car, it was in Texas. He flew there (forgot which city) and drove the #9 car back to southern California!

  4. From last weekend's Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals in Rosemont, Illinois, here are a few shots of John's R4 resto-mod that won a gold award in MCACN's street modified class, out-classing many Novas, tri-five Chevies, Mustangs and Corvettes.
Finally, A Studebaker outclasses them all!
Congratulations go out to Brad Bez at Bez Auto Alchemy! Brad's work on this Avanti R4 Tribute is a winner! It is a major and a prestigous award from a nationallly-recognized show.

This 1963 Studebaker Avanti R4 custom resto-mod won the gold award at last weekend's Muscle Car and Corvette Nationls (MCACN) show in the judged Street Stock Modified Division.

MCACN rules for Street & Modified Judged Vehicles: "Vehicles are judged on a 1,000 point scale with no deductions for deviations from stock. Overall attention to cleanliness and detail inside and outside along with panel fit and finish is considered."

These are the high standards that Brad Bez strives for on each and every automobile taken in for restoration.

Hopefully this will help to elevate the Avanti status a few notches! Others have won awards at Concours of America, Amelia Island & from the AACA & top street rodder shows on the west coast. Major magazines were at the MCACN.....so watch for more positive reports.

  5. That is the main purpose of the dynometer.... to test the engine, fuel/air mixture, timing and all other systems to make sure that nothing bad happens to the engine or car once out on the road. In this case, we discovered that the Paxton Novi 1000 supercharger needs a smaller pulley to put out more boost, and both carbuertors need tweaking to get the mixture better. Air/fuel ratio was good at lower RPMs but started to got too rich over 4,000-4,500 rpms.

  6. We were pretty much testing the engine and car, since it had not been run or driven since being finished. We figure that we were getting about 350 hp at the engine and 250+ at the rear wheels through the torque converter and auto transmission. That said, the boost was too low and Brad needs to change the Novi 1000 pulley to put out more boost and change the timing and carb jetting.

  7. First calibration run on the dyno. After the run, changed settings and getting ready for a full run in this 1963 Avanti R4 with Paxton Novi 1,000 supercharger

Changed timing and leaned out the carburetors for a new dyno run for a 63 Avanti R4 supercharged, paxton Novi 1000.

  8. Under the bright sunshine at Kansas Speedway last week, here's Randy's R3 Avanti, in the correct 1964 Avanti turquoise. Had you been at the meet's verry well attended authenticity seminar, you would have seen a 1963 Avanti in that year's turquoise color, in front of this 1st produciton R3 Avanti. Subtle difference, but accurate. The shade changes a bit depending on how the light, but is correct for 1964.
Next to the 1963 turquoise Avanti at the meet, there is a correct difference - and both are base/clearcoat finishes.

  9. From the Excellence in Authenticity seminar this week in Kansas City. Author and Avanti authenticity expert Alan Basile, with John Hull talked about the on-going project before pointing out authentic items on the first of only nine production R3 Avanti automobiles --this one making its first public debut

  10. Kind of glad I've held off on ordering till things get straightened out!

Most books are now arriving in great shape, despite the post office's best attempts to destroy mail. We replaced StudeNorm's book and a couple of others, as the U.S. Postal Service insures all priority mail packages. All books are sent in priority mail packages.
