  1. And the two Loewy-owned Avantis still exist. One is owned by a man in the Los Angeles area, and the other, is owned by an AOAI member in France.

Both are nearly identical, except the one still in southern  California  has exhaust cut-outs as requested by Loewy himself.

Both cars were delivered at the factory to Loewy Designers,  one picked up and signed for by John Ebstein and one picked up and signed for by Tom Kellogg. See their signatures in the transport document  below, along with their respective production orders:

  2. The Avanti.com website was created nearly 20 years ago by Arlington, Virginia member Richard Gallatin, who mapped the history of the Avanti, from conception to pop culture. Following Richard’s death in March 2017, we’ve recreated this great resource for all Avanti fans. The site also includes a comprehensive registry and technical info.  The site was originally created with a dot.com website address, but mostly recently used a dot.net domain after someone in Romania highjacked the original domain.  The site went offline sometime last March.

It's back now under the original web address: www.theavanti.com with a wealth of history, pop culture and nearly 1,000 separate pages of Everything Avanti.

    Enjoy!

  4. Frank,

Maybe first put a new filter on and see how long it takes before it gets filled up with rust and the engine quits running.  Or, also remove the fuel line from the input to the fuel pump and see if gas flows out of the line.  Since the tank is higher than the engine, fuel should flow freely when you remove the line from the pump.  If no fuel come out, try using your air hose and blow air back through the line to the tank.  if the tank drain is clogged, air will temporarily clear the drain in the bottom of the tank and fuel will again flow out of the line.

If this is the case, then the tank output hole will most likely again clog.

Go under the car and find the short section of fuel line hose coming from the brass fitting in the bottom of the tank, directly above the rear differential. Hopefully you don't have a lot of fuel in the tank, and you can put a pan under the  tank to catch the fuel that drains out.... or if clogged, put a long hose on the brass fitting and put the hose into a larger gas can.  if the fuel flow stops, you can blow air back through this hose and again clear any rust clogging the drain.

After all the gas is out, unscrew the brass fitting from under the tank.  This fitting must be removed before you remove the tank.

After the brass fitting is removed,  go inside the car and remove the rear seat cushions.  Then behind the rear seat back is a fiberglass panel held in place by 20-30 screws.   Remove the screws, then the panel,  and then you can remove the other hoses, tank straps and remove the tank to get boiled out, cleaned and sealed.

The Avanti is in pretty good shape but needs some love. I suspect a fuel issue as it has "run out of gas" after only a few miles.

Frank,    Your lack of fuel to the carburetor sounds like maybe the fuel tank is rusty inside and the rust is clogging the fitting at the bottom of the tank.  I had this happen on another Avanti, and figured out the problem..... I could start and drive the car for a short distance before the engine would quit.   I had an airtank with me and removed the inlet line at the fuel pump.. no gas came out, so I blew air through the line from the front of the car, which cleared the rust in the bottom of the tank and after replacing the line on the fuel pump, let me start the engine again.   But the tank was so rusty that after a short time,  the fuel line would clog again.

Check your tank and if it is rusty inside, remove the tank and have it boiled out at a radiator shop and coated inside.

  6. I looked up the sale history of this car, and it was a no-sale in 2010 Mecum Indy auction at $60,000:

Last year's Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona sold this car at no reserve for $33,000..... someone got a great deal!

Before this car was sold, it was owned by a guy in Maryland who also owns the Egbert Avanti.   Where is this custom Avanti now?

  7. 63R-1252 is just two cars past my own, R1250.   and 1252 is owned by a member in Georgia.   You'll find it in the new 2018/2019 AOAI roster that will arrive in a week or two with your new Issue #180 magazine, just mailed yesterday.

Thanks for the explanation!.........Apparently R5642 (the second to last Studebaker Avanti, and also an R3), did not have that type of ignition system, as I'm looking at a fairly clear photo of its engine compartment and don't see that resistor.

R5642 should have had the transignator ignition too... along with the ballast resistor mounted outside the ignition shielding.   If it's not in the picture, it must have been removed by a former owner.    At the time of this car's auction in February 2010, it has over 55,000 miles and who only knows what work was done over the years. It has a dual brake master cylinder, the radiator tank is black and not red, heater hoses are not original, supercharger is not the correct color of red (it's black & red in the picture)

Although it would certainly be considered correct in its current configuration, I'd bet that the turquoise '64 Avanti (R5089) was originally fitted with the clear parking lamp lenses that we see fitted to the white '64 Avanti (R5643)

Refer to 'Amber Avanti' in the Avanti Trivia section of this forum for more info.

Correct... the turquoise Avanti has the wrong turn signal lenses now, but that will change later today.    New clear lenses were ordered and arrived this weekend.  They will be changed.

I'm planning to clean my boxes out and coat them...I don't have a hoist, just jack stands. Where are the best access points? Do I need to use a hole saw anywhere to gain good access?

  12. I second that!!    I got parts from him, as well as went there and picked up one of his bare Avanti bodies.  He is great to deal with and very fair on his prices.

He has 9 more Avantis in various stages of needing repair.

  13. The following email was sent to us through our AOAI email.  Perhaps a few members near Many, Louisiana can help out a former AOAI member and Avanti owner on Dec. 9 in the town's Christmas parade.  Many, LA is about halfway between Shreveport and Lake Charles, Louisiana..  She is not on this forum, so respond to her email below.

Subject: special request for my dad

    Hi,

I am writing because my father, Georg Joe Boyens, will be the Grand Marshal in the annual Christmas parade in our hometown of Many, Louisiana on Saturday December 9, 2017.  I would love to know if any Studebaker, Avanti owners are nearby? If so, would they be able to loan (for my dad to ride in) or show their presence in the parade?  I know my dad would be so touched if an Avanti or any Studebaker was in the parade.

A little back story about my dad:
He is a diehard Studebaker fan. His first car was a Studebaker.  He ordered and purchased a 1963 R1 Studebaker Avanti.  He still owns the car but it is inoperable now.  He was part of the Avanti club and took my siblings and I to many of the car shows.  My older brother, Joseph, was a huge fan as well.  When Joseph was maybe 5, he attended a show with my dad and they were written about in one of the Avanti publications.  As he got older, my brother and my dad would work on the car together.  In 2001, my older brother was killed a car wreck.  The Avanti was in the middle of a repair and my dad left the Avanti in their barn. A few years later a storm destroyed the barn and the car has been stuck partially under it since then.

This year at 80 years of age, my dad reluctantly retired and closed the doors to his hardware store in August.  This was a very sad time for us all as the store has been in the family since 1904. He is not one to sit still so a week later he got a job working a few hours at a nearby hardware store. Two weeks ago, my dad had a mini stroke that put him in the hospital for 4 days.  Thankfully, he is now home and doing well.  If that wasn't enough, my parents also care full time for my sister who was born mentally handicapped.  They have never asked for anything and they say "God has always provided for them."  I know that Avanti owners are a special type of person and saw that over the years of car shows.  They live life fully, take pride, and care for the long term. I would like to ask this special request on behalf of my dad.  He does not know I'm writing but I know how touched he would be if anyone was able to show up.

I am sorry for the long letter but I want to give you a good understanding of what an amazing man my dad is and what he means to us all!  Thank you for any info on any owners who are nearby or organizations that might be able to attend.

    Kindly,
    Anne Boyens

  14. Or just get a new steel driveshaft made at a local driveshaft shop near you.   I got several Avanti driveshafts made at a shop near me for about $150, including u-joints.  or maybe slightly more...  still under $200.
