  1. Started on the rear suspension this weekend. Passenger side, I spent way too much time getting the hardware free from the leaf spring. Driver side I spent 15 minutes cutting the hardware off. Then spent way too much time sourcing the correct length grade 8 hardware locally. Still had to trim the lengths down on the bolts a bit. Everything is back together today. Just going to torque things down properly tomorrow and take it for a shake down.
Can’t wait to see the difference in ride. The old shocks wouldn’t extend on their own and the springs were inverted.

Front could and shocks will be next.

  2. Long story shortened...

1970 Avanti has inverted leaf springs.
Was going with Flexform composite springs but it’s been a year since we first talked on the phone. They pick up on occasion. Last I talked to them, two months ago, they said they’d bump my order up the line. Can’t get a hold of them.
Think I’m giving up on them.

Other sellers of the HD Avanti leafs I’ve called said that there’s a three month turn around time. And that may vary due to covid. I think they are made to order over seas.

Are there any other leaf springs from a different model that can work? Maybe something a bit more common?

I have all the shocks and front coils waiting in the garage.

    Hi Jred,

That is no good sound deadner, in my humble opinion. This one does a good job on metal cars, not on Avanti's. It just add weight. Sound absorbtion is the way to go, so add foam or wool. This will also help against heat 🙂

It helps a tad with sound and heat from what I have seen already. It’s what I had laying around from previous car projects.
Weight is marginal on such a small surface.
Reinstalling the AC would probably help the most. 😀

  4. I was in the midst of redoing the headliner on my 70' but just got slammed with work and will have to get back to it when the "work" projects die down.

After that its on to the gauges. I'll need to find some good red led's as well.

Removed the old flaking headliner, dated 1962. Vacuumed and sanded the old glue off. Applied some leftover Noico sound deadener. I then cut some board to fit based off the fiberglass headliner replacements that came with the car. I went with the board because I plan on using some fabric in the end to give it a little twist of my own. Had to trim a couple times before I could wedge all sides in place. For the front I replaced the particle board sides with fresh board and new upholstery clips.

Picts of the halted headliner process...

The tachs used in Avantis…especially Studebaker…as well as earlier Avanti IIs…were notoriously inaccurate.  The faster the engine revved the greater the error.  The same goes for the speedometers.

I was noticing that for the speedometer today when comparing gps to the speedo.
many recommendations on after market setups. Considering replacing all the gauges.

What kind of RPM are you turning at those speeds? Do you know your differential ratio?

Next up is getting the tach fixed or replaced. May hook up a temporary tach in the meantime

I should have counted the teeth when I replaced the diff fluid and axle seals but never did. Any other way to tell?

  7. Update.

Got the Avanti out for a longer drive today. Everything thing seems great.
city driving seems to be shifting as it should and the freeway is nice. Over drive comes in at about 65/70. Loving it.
thanks for all the info everyone.

  8. Okay, new tv cable installed and adjusted.
adjusted per instructions and a couple different YouTube tutorials.
I actually feel the shift from 1st into 2nd now which is nice. Making adjustments per instructions and online tutorials the initial shifting was way to harsh at 18-20mph.

Adjusted for the shift to happen at around 15mph and the it’s seems much happier. Those with the 700r4 installed, what speed are you shifting at? @silverstude it’s definitely a head jar/no cup of coffee while moving from 1st-2nd

Unless you have an axle gear of 2:80 or the like,  1st gear in a 700 will take you around 15 feet before it shifts to 2nd.  I have a "built" 700R4, which was adjusted by  the tech's  at "Bowtie Overdrive", the axle has a 3:54 ratio .  Under normal driving, you do not want to have a cup of coffee in your hand when you start off.  Even moderately flooring it and you will be wearing the coffee after the abrupt  shift to 2nd.

The gear spread in a 700 isn't the best and that's been discussed.   I always wondered why you can't start off in 2nd to avoid the " Atlas-Centaur 2nd stage" effect....

Good to know. That’s what was happening.

Jred......Is the lockup torque converter functioning OK?

I’m going down a list of things to check while I learn up on this transmission. After reading up on the tv cable I noticed that the bracket looks diy and there’s too much slack in the cable. Also, the plastic clip that holds the tv cable in the bracket has broke and is held in place with a zip tie. Ha.
I believe this is why 1st and 2nd almost seemed like one gear before. First went into second at around 5-7 mph. What I was chopping up to a malfunction carb was intact, possibly, the tv cable. or just the nature of the 700 from what the members have wrote.
The Rochester four barrel has been rebuilt and running great. Still was getting the strange 1st/2nd gear and an occasion hesitation into what would be overdrive.
Going to call summit and Monster transmission in the Monday to see what combination of bracket and corrector kit I will need to get the tv cable operating correctly. Hoping that will get the trans shifting properly.
opting to wait on getting the center console to look correct at the moment. The letters and number line up relatively accordingly.

  11. When I bought the 1970 Avanti last year I assumed it was the original transmission. Well I saw the previous owner last month and he mentioned that the transmission was a 4spd. I thought maybe he had misspoken or was talking about another car of his but low and behold it is a 700r4.

Are there modifications that can be done to the center console to allow for me to manually shift into first? Something that looks stock? I know my junebug shift knob doesn’t look stock but I’m so curious how the tires will smoke in 1st gear

  12. The last piece I need for my suspension refresh is the rear leafs. I’ve been waiting on Flex-a-form for months now. Last I spoke to them, “the springs are scheduled”, but no more information beyond that. Three weeks ago. It’s challenging to get anyone on the phone there.
I’ve done a search for traditional steal leaf springs but come up with only the “heavy duty” springs.
Not sure that I want the “heavy duty”.
any other suggestions and or experiences with the HD springs?
