  1. The first six months of Avanti body production was in Ashtabula, Ohio.  When the second Avanti body assembly line start in South Bend, Indiana in December 1962, I believe that it occupied space shared with truck production.  Regardless of these facts, I have seen many pictures of Studebaker Avanti production in South Bend.

It's worse than you think - I don't have 'Hog Troughs' but something WORSE.  A convoluted metal system designed to attach the body to the frame that was made to RUST!  I have pieces (chunks) falling off from time-to-time, and I'm missing at least one body mount (found the bolt lying on the garage floor one day years ago).  I'm talking about the '87-88 Monte Carlo frames.

I was afraid that that may be the case.  I didn't see what year your Avanti is in this thread/topic.  I can only suggest trying to make repairs to the rusted areas to prevent further failure.

I purchased a 1987 Avanti new, but no longer have it.  From a dealer in NJ it came to me in NY, then a dealer in AZ and a new buyer in NV (I don't know if he still has it.).  If yours spent most/all of its life in WI, I can understand the rust issue.

  3. I believe that I have a similar scissor jack.  It would cost more to ship it across the country than it is worth.  I think that it came out of one of the Avantis that I owned, but I doubt that it is original equipment.  You should be able to locate something similar locally.  Try local wrecking yards, dismantlers, junk yards, used parts places, flea markets.

He was driving a (think this is the correct year car) 2002 Mercedes Kompressor coupe.  Before the Mercedes, he owned an red Acura NSX

This is a faster correct answer than I expected.  I like to throw in a trivia every once and awhile so that they are not all from "MFG"/Ed.  I expected some to guess Avanti.  Tom did own an Avanti, but not close to the time of his death.  Tom really liked his Acura NSX.

We have the production order for our RQA-0271 and it shows a date to ship of 4-19-68 and clearly shows a "1968 Model" printed, not hand written on the order.  Its actual  date shipped shows 4-11-69.  I am assuming here, but it I think it might have been built early in '68 and held in inventory for a year and sold as a '69.  It is registered as a 1969.  I hope this helps.

    My list/records show that S/N as a 1969.

If I understand this correctly, your 1970 Avanti is RQA 0330.  My 1969 is RQA 0375  (engine #  V03128BQ)   Is it possible for there to be a 45 car difference with the higher VIN being a year earlier?  I can understand the 6,000 difference in engine numbers......GM may have been shipping the engines randomly.

According to my records, both of those S/Ns are 1970 Avantis.  I show RQA 0313 as the last 1969 Avanti.

Possibly, RQA 0375 was assembled in the 1969 calendar year as a 1970 model and erroneously titled as a 1969.  I don't have a check on the assembly dates, so this is an educated guess.

I don't think that it was GM "shipping the engines randomly", but rather, Avanti using the engines in a batch in no particular order.

I am new to Avanti's. I just purchased a 69. Its in excellent shape and really needs nothing!  I have a question. The serial number is BRQA0269. A friend of mine told me it was the second one built in 69.  I think it was car number 69 out of the 92 built in 69 Who is correct? Thanks in advance for any reply's .

I believe that the "B" was added by some state to get a minimum number of characters.

According to my records, RQA0269 would be the 12th S/N issued for 1969 out of a total of 56.  It is the 269th Avanti II S/N.

  8. I only meant for the use of a small amount of PB Blaster to be used to free up a seized part (shaft in a bushing/bearing).

This should be followed up by a  drop or two of very light oil (like sewing machine oil).

I appreciate the feedback from Rev Ken.  I was going to tell him that even though the motor is turning now, he should get a drop or two of light oil in the bearing/bushing.

  9. I would try to free it up.  Drill small holes (eighth inch, or less) in the bearing areas.  First put something in to help loosen the bearings (PB Blaster).  After you get it turning freely, oil the bearings through those holes.  It will probably be good for another ten years.

  10. The crank arm to motor shaft nut loosened.

An internal-external toothed lock washer was added under the crank arm retaining nut.  Besides being phased into production, it could also be added post production.

  11. Welcome to the AOAI Forum!

Studebaker International has door seals for 1983s.  I do not know of a difference to 1984.  Someone else can chime in with any difference with the seals around the doors.

You might also try Valerie Hansen, that is where most of the reproduction gaskets for Studebakers and Avantis come from.

Even though your Avanti was not built by Studebaker, especially the body and chassis is quite similar to 1963-1964 Studebaker Avantis.  I strongly suggest that you join the Studebaker Drivers Club as well as AOAI to get information, including vendors, related to your Avanti.  .

Wow they are really wide tires...I run 215 X70X15  & they are noticeably wide but yours are even wider. I sure hope you're not running on Stude wheels?!

You would definitely need a 6" or 6 1/4" wheel for that width tire !

.  I do not know what he is referring to when he states; "16:1 aspect ratio".  He is probably referring to the steering ratio.

With the emissions era, it behooved Newman - Altman , Blake, Kelly And Cafaro to use the GM engines that had already passed government emissions tests.  The end of the old Lark frame era  was brought about by worn out dies and government crash test regulations. After the Blake bankrupcy, Kelly needed a chassis, so the El Camino and Monte Carlo's were purchased from dealers, disassembled and all tin was sold off. The frames, engines, wiring harnesses, instrament panels and exhaust were modified for the 87 thru 88 models.   The 89 thru 91 models were based on the Caprice Classic. The 3 AVX's and later models based on the Firebird and Camaro. The last models 2004 thru 2007 were based on Mustang coupe and convertibles.   Lou Cote

I don't remember El Caminos being used, only Monte Carlos (for 1987-1988).  I could be proven wrong on this by the VIN of the donor vehicle.

2001-2004 were based on a Firebird.  2005-2007 were based on a Mustang (since we are talking engines, most were V8s and some were six cylinder).  .    .
