CORRECT ANSWER...........# 2.....One second difference between the two Avantis!
What were the two times?
-
True (not necessarily open carriers).
-
3) 201
-
False - "...The racing version of the Avanti engine, designated Model R-3.... Performance and design characteristics of this engine are such that it is not recommended for normal city and highway usage."
-
About that time, I saw Paula Murphy at the New York Auto Show (of course that doesn't mean she lived there) plus the run was from east to west. Based on these facts, I will guess 2) New York..
-
I will say; Nate Altman.

They added an ignition bypass wire to give full voltage when cranking to facilitate easier starting. This is not points, but I thought this change may be what you are looking for.
They also changed the condenser listing to a proper number.
New ignition points with shorter breaker arms and less spring tension were introduced to improve performance and starting and to reduce rubbing block wear.

If at all possible, unbolt the hood from the car and place it upside-down on padded 'horses'.............
Replacing pad is' soooo' much easier when you're not fighting gravity!!
This is a good tip. I will add - mark the location before removing to make alignment at reattachment easier.
-
They had a problem removing all of it ,particularly where there was an emblem, in order to replace it.

I even own one of the Tom Kellogg sketches that were on the wall of the design studio/house (sketches later claimed by Loewy). Like most of them, it is a profile drawing, so it doesn't show parking lamps.
I do think that the trivia question may be true.

What did Studebaker recommend be retrofitted to all Avantis built before serial # 63R2602?
New, improved ignition points and an ignition by-pass wire.

Rain Gutters on the roof
They weren't standard equipment until R-4420.

I will guess differential ratio since he would want a more streetable car.

I am sold. This makes another source that I used to be incorrect.

So what's so special about Studebaker Avanti # R5237?
It was the second production R3 and it was Black (also a four speed).

I disagree with your opinion here Gary....Mr. Romine apparently spent quite a bit of time in Ohio getting the Avanti body project underway, and was certainly a 'key player' in that venture!
I agree that he "spent quite a bit of time in Ohio...".

Correct!
I thought that this one might take longer. I like to break up all of the trivia questions from one source. It is easier to ask them than to answer some of them.

I believe his name was Otis Romine.
Incorrect. Otis worked on the project, but I do not believe that he was an engineer or that he had a full time presence at MFG.
-
What was the name of the production engineer loaned by Studebaker to MFG to assist in getting the early Avanti bodies constructed properly in Ashtabula?
-
I am going to venture a guess of 2) E. T. Reynolds.
-
It sounds familiar (in my memory bank), but I didn't find any reference to back that up.

False. ISTR, December 26, 1963.

Air coditioning was optional on mid-seventies Avanti ll's,....What did the factory recommend ordering when A/C was selected?
Nothing! I thought that air conditioning was standard equipment at that time.

Probably "originally" 1) Raymond Loewy due to the fact that his personal BMW 507 had a similar off-center hood "gun sight".
Avanti 1/4!

I will guess 3) 6.5.
