  1. JLBKY.....That's INTERESTING!!.....An original Stude Avanti frame doesn't have its 'secret serial number' in the same location as on other Stude passenger cars, as the rearmost crossmember (where the number is located on Larks & Hawks) isn't used on the Avanti. (it was replaced with the round 'tubular' crossmember)

Now we know where that secret number IS located on Avantis!......I don't think this information has EVER been mentioned before!

    WELL DONE JLBKY!!!!!!

  2. I agree with Jack...My guess is twenty(?) years ago someone found the original Dunlop disc front brakes on your Avanti inoperable...and didn't have the$$$$ or expertise to restore them.

At that point they realized Hawk/Lark V8 front drum brakes would bolt right on...and would be much cheaper to 'bring back to life'. (Boneyard parts)

One of the issues which you have now is that the previous owner probably DID NOT change the original Stude Avanti rear drum brakes.....and, of course, they were never meant to be used with front drum brakes.

If someone ACTUALLY WANTED a Studebaker Avanti with front drum brakes removed from, say, a Studebaker Hawk, they MUST USE the REAR drum brakes off of that Hawk also!!

PS....I would say this hybrid drum brake setup used in conjunction with the original Avanti disc brake power booster would....'PUT YOU THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD'.....So be carefull!!!

  3. RQB 1820...I'd describe the leather interior color as 'oxblood'....I think that's what the Avanti people called it....The rearseat backrest has a tear in it...but the lower cushion is OK (I think.)

I removed most of the interior from this car when I purchased it... as the car sits out.....I stored most of it in my cellar....over ten years ago!!!!! (No front seats)

PS....If I remember correctly, rear seat lower cushions in 'later' Avantis like this '73 do not have the 'spring & wire' seat frame as, say, a Studebaker Avanti would have......the leather upholstery, I believe, was put over a shaped 'foam' material of some sort. My '83 and my '85 are made the same way.

  4. dstuff5...I'm not offended by your offer...I figured it would be worth a bit more than that....but not much.

The real issue would be the difficulty in moving this Avanti around, (which I sometimes need to do), without steering....as right now it's an engineless 'roller'.

Give me some time to think about it,....It's not going anywhere else!

  5. The authentic Studebaker R3 engine that was on display at the SNM, and later sold and installed in an Avanti, produced.....1) 335........2) 357........3) 379.....or......4) 405 horsepower when it was dynoed prior to the install.

  6. OK Bob, I just took a picture of the fuse box schematic of my '83 Avanti manual....I'm not sure how to post photos on the AOAI forum, so look for the photo under 'General Discussion' on the SDC Forum....I'll put this on today.....Ed

  7. As I also own an '83 Avanti, RQB-3655. I can tell you that in my owners manual there's a foldout schematic of the fuse box, plus, I believe, a few foldout pages of interchange info...(belts, hoses) and some info on the carb & emission system

But it's a shadow of the complete wiring diagram found in the Studebaker Avanti shop manual for the earlier cars.
