I think that the 700R4 has a very low (high numerically) first gear which would account for smoking the rear tires with that sky-high 2.86 rear. The Studebaker Avanti Powershift's first gear isn't all that low. If My '63 had a 700R4 in it, I'm pretty sure I'd be leaving the 3.07 in place. My '83 Avanti has a 700R4 with the 2.86 rear....and it does seem to accelerate very well. The 700R4 is definitely a nice transmission to have in an Avanti!

Just today removed the cover from the TT differential I'm re-installing in My '63. I thought for sure the ratio would be 3.54-1, but the numbers on the ring gear are 43/13, which divides out to 3.31. That's OK... it's still a good alternative to the 3.07's that are in the car now. (ratio tag under cover bolt was missing, although limited-slip tag still there)

I don't understand what You mean by "transmission is slow to release when stopping". It doesn't automatically shift down to first gear?

Hey that trip You made in Your 'new' '85 avanti must have been a lot of fun! What type of work does Your '85 need? I also own an '85, (RQB 4234), and a '63, as You do. Although the cars are similar in appearance, as You say there are many differences between the two. Looking forward to hearing more about Your car!

I was wondering about the heat situation too. I'll bet the regular Stude metal shim exhaust manifold gaskets are out, and some type of thicker composite gasket would need to be used with these aluminum headers. Still, a lean running engine may push the limits!

Might anyone out there have a used set of front and rear '84-'85 Avanti composite bumpers for sale off a wreck, burnt car, etc.? Of course, the supporting bracketry would also be needed. I'd like to install these on My '83 in place of the original steel 'blade' bumpers.

Met up with Dave Thibeault last week, and He showed Me an unfinished aluminum R3 style header He'll be marketing. Looks just like the original Stude cast iron type...but much lighter. First-class workmanship I thought!

I also run Magnum 500's on My '83 Avanti...a high quality wheel that has a classic look, and has stood the test of time!

Kind of difficult to measure with all mouldings in place...but here goes : (This '83 has never been hit)
A pillar to B pillar, right side, measured at top inside corners....29 3/4"
Height of right side door opening measured 15" forward of B pillar...39 1/4"
A pillar to A pillar, parallel to floor, in line with L&R door upper hinges lower retaining bolts.....54 1/4"
Let Me know if You need more specific measurements.

CaffeineRacer...Now that You mention it, there really is no off idle stumble when the engine is cold and warming up. The problem is there once the engine is up to normal (195) temperature. Hmmmm!
Also, I never really thought of testing the pressure output of the new fuel pump...but I could try that, as I have one of those vac-press gauges. Food for thought....Thanks!

I love the look of the Halibrand mag wheel as offered on the Studebaker Avantis. One issue You may want to consider, (and I might be wrong about this), is that most of the folks that would be interested in buying a set would be attempting to add an authentic option to their cars.....and that means only folks with 1964 Avantis would be mainly interested, as I don't belive the Halibrand mag wheel was an option on the '63's. If this is true, it may substantially lower the amount of Studebaker Avanti owners that would be willing to make the investment in these wheels. (Although the cost You mention sounds very fair)

Thanks for Your input on this problem guys. The history of this Quadrajet is that it was overhauled with a kit about three years ago (did the work myself) and this overhaul included a new composite float. It performed quite well after that.....and still does in every way except for that pesky 'off idle' stumble or bog. I hear You about the questionable accelerator pump....but the twin squirts of fuel are forceful and instantaneous as soon as the throttle is moved....I'm really confused on this one!....Any other thoughts? THANKS!

Any thoughts on this one?.......My '83 Avanti (RQB3655) has recently developed a 'just off idle' hesitation or 'bog'. This showed up about two months ago,..the day I changed out a leaky mechanical fuel pump. This car has been converted to non-electronic carb (Quadrajet) and distributor...this conversion was done years ago, and the car has always ran and responded very well. In the past two months I've changed the fuel filter in the carb inlet, changed the in line filter ahead of the fuel pump, removed and cleaned out the inside of the carb very thoroughly, then adjusted and reinstalled it on a new base gasket, changed the spark plugs, cap and rotor. As I drive this Avanti daily, I have to keep it reliable, hence the reason I threw the tune up at it. I notice an unusual amount of play in the primary throttle shaft when I jiggle the linkage....could there be a vacuum leak at this shaft? All hoses, etc., are definitely A-OK. THANKS!

Anyone know what type of differential lube is best to use for a complete refill of a '63 Avanti Twin Traction (posi) rear end? Will regular 75-90W multi-purpose gear oil do?

I looked on the ebay link but I don't see a picture of the power switches. I hope to restore the Avanti to as close to original as possible so my first chore is to find original switches. If none are to be had I am fine with keeping the manual setup. Any thought on where to score the switches would be great.
MFG: if your setup is factory, would you send a photo of the switches?
Does anyone know what options item "X84 AC3286" on my Production Order stands for.

Tom...If You want brand new switches, I'm pretty sure that the switches for the Studebaker Avanti power windows are the same as those used on the '57 Ford Thunderbird (baby bird) with power windows....same buttons and chrome bezels...only difference is Stude used ivory buttons, while Ford used black buttons. These switches have been reproduced for the T-Birds, and are readily available from 'early bird' restoration parts suppliers.

I second that! Although the power windows in My '83 Avanti (RQB-3655) work well, power windowed Avantis from the Studebaker era seem problematic. They also add extra weight to the doors, which stresses the hinge pockets. Manual window Studebaker Avantis are sought after for this reason. I'd be a buyer for Your manual window regulators if You do decide to part with them.

I just yesterday bought a stainless steel exhaust system through Dave Thibeault. Can't believe the difference in the weight of each pipe compared to mild steel! This exhaust system, and a change back to my '63's original 3.54 TT rear end, will be this year's 'improvements'. I installed a 3.07 rear gear several years ago for an easier highway cruise... but I now don't think that was a good move....the 3.07 really seemed to kill the car's 'low end' (even starting out in 1st) (Auto trans.)

I had a heck of a time finding the correct rear wheel bearings and inner and outer rear axle grease seals for My '83 Avanti (RQB3655). Finally found the proper parts, so I thought I'd share this info. I think all the '81-'85 Avanti rear axles would be the same. (Very much different from earlier Avanti rear axles)...Rear wheel bearing: National A-10. Rear axle outer grease seal: Dura Last (Auto Zone) D9912. Rear axle inner grease seal: National 481837.

Very nice photo of Your Mom and the Avanti. The blackwall tires really are a nice contrast to the white paint.

Yes that's correct....I had to figure out for Myself that splitting that collar was the only way to remove the bearing and outer seal....but the new A-10 wheelbearing comes with a new collar and detailed instructions. It's one of those jobs that seems fairly easy once You've done the first one!
