Your a bit off the mark here Bob!....What the pictures show is the console cooling kit which Studebaker offered for 'single cowl screen' (round headlight) Avantis.....It was a retrofit kit for these earlier Avantis whose owners complained of a super-hot console and shifter.
Studebaker 'fixed' this issue on the '64 'square headlight' Avantis, by adding the second smaller driver's side cowl screen, and placing the tubular console air inlets (with attached hoses) directly below this new second screen!
The 'second cowl screen' was definitely added to cool down the Avanti console area.

Correct answer!
-
The first 'square light' '64 Studebaker Avanti was originally planned to be a 'round headlight' car.....True?
-
No ideas on this one?
-
The second cowl intake no doubt does deliver a bit more air to the driver's side air vent, but I'd agree with Gunslinger than its true reason for 'being' was to cool down the transmission tunnel area and floor shifter assy.....Answer....FALSE!
-
Good point Bob!....I was going with TRUE,...but the actual answer could be TRUE or FALSE!
-
The second cowl intake, installed on Studebaker Avantis as part of the 1964 styling changes, was added to give increased air volume to the heater/ventilator system.....True?
-
Studebaker Avanti R3 tachometers used the same tach sender as R1 & R2 tachometers used.....True?
-
What is the interior trim item most commonly found missing on unrestored (square light) '64 Studebaker Avantis?
-
ANSWER...The item(s) originally planned for production, but later scrubbed, were the twin air filters. These filters were even assigned Stude part numbers! (1563055/56)
What was eventually used was a GM air filter assy, like the one which was shipped from Paxton on the SNM R4 display engine..

Right on the money Rob! Loewy's '63 Avanti didn't have a 160 speedo because it had a metric speedo!...FALSE!
-
Although Raymond Loewy's 1963 Avanti was built well after the 160 MPH speedometer became standard equipment on supercharged models, his particular Avanti wasn't equipped with the 160 speedo.......True?

Are we all done here?

Although changing out an old ballast resistor might be considered good 'preventive maintenance', the truth is those things can go on forever, and they REALLY only need to be changed should they fail...Answer....FALSE!
-
It's a good idea to change out an Avanti's ignition ballast resistor every few years.....True?
-
No thoughts on this question?

The one 'factory' R4, the CAR LIFE MAGAZINE Daytona, wasn't ordered with air.....but it could have been.
There is no published info, as far as I know, that Studebaker decided NOT to offer air if a customer ordered the R4 engine option.
The optional '288' cam and the transignitor ignition were available till the end.
Any other guesses/thoughts on this question?
-
Nope, A/C was an available option with the R4 engine.
-
The very first pre-production Studebaker Avanti, virtually a hand made car, was assembled in building #84, in South Bend.......True?
-
2 - Choke issues
Exactly right!, Basically a defective choke relay box. (located above the right inner fender skirt).....(2)
-
The Studebaker Avanti 'inside the car' trunk release was the brainchild of Otis Romine........True?
-
If the red dashboard light, located between the speedometer and the tach on a 1982 Avanti, stays on while driving it indicates..........1) low oil pressure.......2) burnt out choke relay..
3) alternator not charging?
-
What item that was planned for use on the Studebaker Avanti R4 engine was later cancelled before it entered production?
'Vented' R3!

An R3 Studebaker Avanti's cast aluminum carburetor air chamber has a 'flapper valve' type vent, same as the one used on Golden Hawk carb air boxes, installed on the R3 air chamber's bottom half.....True?
