When I had my '02 Avanti I received a Best Foreign Car award as it fit in no other category for some reason.

The Studebaker V-8 has a multi-piece oil pan gasket(s)...something like a dozen separate pieces. It's very common for any of them to shrink and leave an opening for oil to leak from. The rear main seal is a problem area as well with some engines.

That particular engine and transmission may have been stock. Did you receive any paperwork that might tell you the history of the engine or transmission (like rebuilds)? Others, more knowledgeable than I can advise, but I don’t remember the 400 turbo tranny being used in an Avanti. It had a substantially bigger housing than the 350 turbo and could withstand a lot of power. It is a good stout transmission. It was usually used in trucks, and found a following in drag racing cars. Please tell us more about the car - are the cosmetics good? Brakes, suspension, electrical? Does it still have a carb setup? The 73 has been known to be a very well built car and as mentioned, has the Studebaker frame and King Pin steering setup. You’ll want an old school mechanic for any repairs. Maybe you can post a few pictures? Hope you enjoy it.

I bought a R2 with a freshly rebuilt engine. It has to areas where it's just leaking a little and that is at the oil pan front and rear neoprene seals. I'm sure they were put on dry and clean without any other sealant. I'm planning on pulling the pan soon to replace the gaskets/seals and will fix the problem.

Drain plug would make sense on mine since it's in the general area and below oil level, but it is very tight and has a copper washer. I'll give it another look though

I have been told that one way to see the source of a leak is to wash the potential leak area well and when it is dry, spread some powder (talcum powder) over the area. This will reveal the location of the leak. I have not tried this yet, but I plan to do so. I just noticed the same in my garage and it was the the drain plug.

My '63 has an engine that was fully rebuilt in the early 2000's and driven little since. There are oil leaks from the engine and I've checked and replaced the oil pressure gauge hose and tightened the pan bolts. It seems to leak even when just sitting in the garage which seems strange to me - shouldn't the oil level when sitting around be below the crankshaft seals? What is the most likely source of the leaks? (which at a glance appear to be front and rear seals)

Last year, we discovered a national car show called Mustang Week. It’s a 5 day event with the first 3 days being held at Houston Tx Motorsports Pkwy for Mustang owners who want to race their car, receive drifting lessons, Dyno their cars and receive “how to race” lessons from “Street Outlaws” Mike Marrillo. We inquired about attending and once they saw our 2006 Mustang based Avanti, they said yes. We attended the last 2 days which were a public car show plus a day of judging. We took home a trophy, but more importantly, I came back with several “upgrade ideas” which I implemented. Just back from Palm Springs, we participated the same 2 days with Mustang Week this year 4 days later in Galveston TX. Once again, we had a great time seeing the hundreds of Mustangs, educating everyone about the Avanti car and this time we won Best of Show Mustang Conversion! Yet there was another benefit of attending and that is the addition of 4 new ideas that I’ll be implementing on the restoration of our 63 R2. Fun, Fun, Fun

Yes thats where it goes. As far as your 6 wires they go into a rubber block that mates to your other 6 wire connector, photos of block with wires removed and connector on wire harness,also wires from turn signal to go into rubber block

Thanks. I have the schematics but they do not show where the loom actually passes thru the body. Was this channel in the body below the fuel tank used for the wire loom? will have to pull the carpet to see if the channel continues

Yes, the trans can definitely be removed without removing the engine/trans assy… but availability of a twin post lift would sure make the job easier!

My transmission in my 72 Avanti is leaking badly in the front. I see several drops of fluid coming out of the small hole at the botton of the bellhousing cover. I had two transmission mechanics tell me the front seals on those trannies seldom go out. My front seal and the front pump bushing was replaced just a few months ago. Yet it's leaking again badly! It was very difficult for this 70 year old to pull just the engine a few months ago and I really don't want to do it again. I want a shop to do it, so again my question is can they just drop the trannie clear of the X frame. Or do they have to pull the engine? Never have I had a more troublesome car than the two GM power train Avantis. If I can get this thing fixed and sold, I am going back to pure Studebaker!!

I was provided with an Owner’s Guide with the purchase of 1692. I believe it is the original guide for 63R-2068 with body # 63-RQ-1232, since those numbers are written on page 4. I have a reproduction guide and would like to return this guide to the owner of 2068. Any assistance in locating the current owner would be appreciated.

A Stude Avanti manual cable setup can replace your power trunk release with no problems…. Same trunk latch.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Palm Springs meet! Great hotel, the Loewy tours were awesome and the seminar speakers were entertaining and informative. Thanks to the organizers for all the planning, work and heavy lifting behind the scenes. I had to leave early on Wednesday, so I hope the caravan and the photo shoot were equally outstanding. Although I agree that the AOAI and SDC meets are better combined, this "one off" in Palm Springs made perfect sense to those of us who wanted to see "the room where it happened".
