It may be, I'm not for sure. I'm the current record holder of the AVX-2007 models and keep it updated as changes are discovered. John and I speak off and on and he's aware of the need to locate the 03-05 records but hasn't located them yet. Current.xlsx -

Thanks, Ron. After I posted this thread, I noticed the one that aardvark had posted regarding his 2002 Avanti and the two postings from John Hull. As you know, he gave the production numbers for the 2001 and 2002 Avanti‘s. I’m hoping he’ll come up with some numbers for the 2003’s as well as the other years. He indicated that if there was enough interest, he would release more information. He is an invaluable asset to the Avanti community. Thanks for letting me know that I have a twin as far as colors go. The 2003 brochure shows a fender shot with my color but with full chrome wheels. I suppose this could be my 2002 twin? -
There was no warranty given with the R3. Allegedly, Andy wouldn't let one leave unless it produced 400 hp so that would take some tinkering to dial it in. I'm thinking 3 hours?

George, We have complete 2001-2002 records provided by John Hull. 2003-2004 records are sparce. We estimate around 55 were made for the Firebird based 2003-2004 year models with a majority of them being 2003 models. Avanti changed year models in the Fall like most car makers did in the day. Pontiac had discontinued the Firebird at the end of 2002 with the Avanti 2003-2004 cars being built in 2003. We have records of five 2003 models and four 2004 models at this time and hope to be able to update these records at some point in the future. In early 2004, Avanti started working on a new body for the SN95 Mustang and we know of 2 of these cars that were made. In 2005 they made 8 and then stopped since Ford ended production of that model. They had to tool up again during 2005 to build the last generation car on the S197 Mustang chassis all while moving from Villa Rica, Georgia to Cancun, Mexico. Your car has 1 twin, same color in a 2002 convertible. -

Thanks Ron! This is GREAT NEWS.

I have Eric Johnson’s 2003 Avanti. Does anyone know how many 2003s were produced? I want to have a show board prepared for car shows and it would be neat to be able to say what number this car is in the scheme of things (like one of 30).

Stan Gundry's "What the Shop Manual Won't Tell You" book

Please read the "Announcements" -
I spoke today with Stan (an AOAI member) and his daughter Ann about his book. It is available and ready to ship. The website is being rebuilt on a different platform with a different host which is why the current URL is down. In the past 2 years, Stan's wife passed and then he went through several surgeries which took him away from the business for quite a while. His email address also had and is having problems, so he hasn't been receiving emails (we tested it today). Today he is healthy for his age and doing well. To order the book, send a check of $65 to: Stan Gundry, 4142 Burton St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546. Feel Free to send me a PM if you have any trouble receiving the book and I'll contact them.

Supposedly, Avanti R3 engines, which were built at Paxton Products in California, were subject to a series of tests lasting …..?….. hour(s) before being shipped to South Bend. 1) One…..2) Two…..3) Three ….or…..4) Four

Sherwood Egbert’s salary at Studebaker was about ….?…. the amount of the man he replaced, Harold Churchill. 1) Half…..2) Same….3) Double….or…..4) Triple

Anyone thinking of separating their Paxton supercharger ‘halves’ for a thorough clean out of the fluid reservoir may want to purchase (ahead of time) the two o-rings that seal the halves. Those two large o-rings are fairly easy to nick or break, and I doubt if replacements could be found locally. Paradise Wheels in California stocks them… Ed

Thanks AG. I have a diagram for an 82, probably the same? Looks like it shares a fuse with the power window relays. I’ll have to try and trace it out. Just strange it all of a sudden came on. Mike

1982 Chevy shop manual is great idea. I live in a condo and another tenant has a beautiful restored 1956 Chevy. He went as far as to have a shop replace the carb with fuel injection. I might do that. Working on this Avanti is nigh impossible not having my shop tools handy. I am considering selling it on consignment where I bought it.

If the bubbles return…you might try pricking the bubble with a fine point. It could allow the moisture or whatever it is to evaporate and you can lay the bubble down.
