  3. Hello all!

My wife just gave me my dream car for my 68th birthday - Happy to be here!

  4. Hi, I have replaced all the bushings and king pin bearings etc. In order to adjust the maximum caster, I have installed shims on the lower control arm at the rear and the upper one at the front. I thought that this way I would get the right angle at which I could get maximum rotations with the outer pin. While searching for articles on the subject, I found your old post today. You have apparently done the same steps as me.

How many degrees of caster did you get with your steps?

I ended up with 1.75 on the passenger side and 1.50 on the drivers side.  The camber was way off on the passenger side and I ended up slotting the top of the frame to get the camber at zero.  The car hadn't been wrecked and I had read that this was a common problem with some Avanti IIs.

  10. Thank you 63r2 for the information and the reminder. I should have remembered to look at my parts catalog to see the diagram.  I still would not have known the background that you provided. I saw the inlets you described but never questioned what they were for. Now I know. What did you replace your hoses with? OEM (if available) or aftermarket? The first foot or so of the hoses from the top on each side seems OK, so I thought I might try to get a larger hose to slide over it and run it to the shifter area. I left about a 1/2" of the old hoses at the shifter so I can slip the new hoses on. The hoses are 1-1/2". Hopefully this will save some work and achieve what Studebaker tried to do.

      GEORGE MACKENZIE

Hi Michael and Peter - About a week after your responses, I finally dealt with the task. It was a slog, but I got it done. I ended up replacing the entire right side. I purchased a pool hose (1-1/2") and a spa hose (1" I.D.}. The spa hose was the only thing that would squeeze between the consul and the control levers.  On the left side, the hose was ok until after the bend at the trans hump. I inserted the spa hose the rest of the way. I've reduced the air flow from the original, but it's better than what I had. If I was doing what you are doing Michael, I'd redo it all. Good luck with the install. - George

  11. Steve, this is Mike Phillips (spoiler guy), I have been informed by Footer (the other Mike) that you will be picking up his Avanti spoiler at the AOAC meet. I wanted to give you my cell # to coordinate the transfer of the part once in Washington Pa. I will be arriving latter in the day on Wednesday, so maybe meet up Thursday? Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

      Richard,

Glad you like it and that it arrived safely and quickly.  I enclosed a copy of a newspaper ad for the old Studebaker dealership in Palm Springs.  It was initially on the main street in Palm Springs.  Then it relocated a few miles to the adjacent community of Cathedral City while keeping the Palm Springs Motors Studebaker name.  After Studebaker folded, it became a Ford dealership, still called Palm Springs Motors, and currently exists in Cathedral City, CA.

      Thanks again,

      Dennis
