Desert Driver Posted Thursday at 09:30 PM Report Posted Thursday at 09:30 PM If you've purchased NOS Strato Vue outside mirrors, please let me know the screw spacing. I'm thinking of ordering left and right hand mirrors to replace my stock mirrors. The screw spacing on my car is 3.5 inches (center to center hole). Sure would be nice if the Strato Vues lined up with what I currently have.
Dwight FitzSimons Posted Friday at 10:59 AM Report Posted Friday at 10:59 AM AFAIK NOS Strato Vue mirrors haven't been available for decades. The current reproductions are superior to the originals. So, the issue is the screw spacing of the repros, isn't it? --Dwight

I'm trying to avoid drilling more holes in the fiberglass. Soooooo...if someone could grab a tape measure and let me know. Much appreciated!!

Guy Posted Saturday at 09:17 PM Report Posted Saturday at 09:17 PM Here is a comparison between original strato vue on left 2 1/2 " hole space and repro on right 3" hole spacing⁸

Mark L Posted yesterday at 01:37 AM Report Posted yesterday at 01:37 AM Also, I think the Avanti needs some kind of special inserts that fit in the holes in the fiberglass, and the screws that go through the mirror base screw into the centers of the inserts, not directly into the fiberglass.

Ah! Maybe a parallel is plastic drywall anchors?
John Brissette Posted 22 hours ago Report Posted 22 hours ago The "special inserts" referred to above by Mark L, are called well nuts. They are rubber with a brass machine screw insert . When you tighten the screw, the well nut bulges preventing the well nut from coming out. Just like a nutsert. I've seen these well nuts at better stocked ACE Hardware stores.
Mark L Posted 11 hours ago Report Posted 11 hours ago (edited) If one were to buy the correct well nuts for an Avanti side mirror from a Studebaker or Avanti parts vendor, what would be the correct part number to order? Edited 11 hours ago by Mark L
Guy Posted 10 hours ago Report Posted 10 hours ago Studebaker international has them in thier catalog # 800203 5$ a pair
Desert Driver Posted 4 hours ago Author Report Posted 4 hours ago Many thanks to all who provided the info I need. Looks like I'll be drilling at least one hole as I'm off by a lousy half inch! 😵💫
