Ronny Daytona Posted March 11 Report Posted March 11 Hi, I have a chance to buy a ‘63. It came with a factory supercharger, but it had been removed sometime in it’s past. Wondering what the car would be worth as is, and how much a correct supercharger setup would cost. The car has been sitting outside for about 30 years. Interior still looks presentable. Four speed car. Thank you.

A core might cost several hundred dollars and a rebuild might be $1000. (Someone who knows more than I do please chime in.) If the supercharger bracket and idler arm are gone then that would be "hundreds" more. Then there is the air horn, air cleaner, and carb. More hundreds. So, assuming those parts are gone it might cost "several thousand $" to put the engine back to R2 status. --Dwight
mfg Posted March 12 Report Posted March 12 Well, one thing in your favor (assuming the R2 engine is still with the car), is that it would have the correct lower compression cylinder heads, which are fairly scarce these days!
63stick Posted March 12 Report Posted March 12 If it's been sitting outside for 30 years, I think you will have bigger problems and other costs than the blower setup.
63stick Posted March 12 Report Posted March 12 There are two blowers, just the blower, not even the front pulley on Ebay for $2,100 ea. Both chromed.

The lower compression heads (R2) have a "raised" casting number ending in 582. The higher compression heads (R1 ) have a casting number of 570. This casting number is on the center exhaust outlet on the head. --Dwight
Mark63Avanti Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 (edited) Engine pictures in that post shows the supercharger bracket and tensioner arm are still on the engine. This looks to only be missing the supercharger. This car will take a lot of love to put back together. The carburetor is covered and it appears to be missing the air bonnet and the air filter housing. Edited March 13 by Mark63Avanti More Info
mfg Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 Looks to be quite a project in both time & $$$$$$…. However, if you decide to purchase this Avanti, starting with a factory R2 four speed car is definitely the way to go!… Best of luck…. Ed
Geoff Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 From my home of San Jose. Still have my 408 mobile number. At least the metal parts beneath should be good, maybe light surface rust but that would be the extent of it.
64studeavanti Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 This is not a 4spd. Notice the yellow dipstick for the auto trans in the engine bay.

Notice the yellow dipstick for the auto trans in the engine bay. ‘Ronny’s’ original question mentions “ four speed car”… which accounts for my comment, however, I now do indeed see the auto trans dipstick!…….. Whether an Avanti has a four speed or automatic transmission probably wouldn’t be a game changer to me, but, in general, it seems that R2 four speed models are a bit more sought after. On the other hand… if you look closely at the photo of the interior taken through the passenger side window, it sure looks like a four speed shifter boot screwed down onto the console….. INTERESTING!!!!!!

Actually, 64 studeavanti, ….if you also look closely at the photo of interior taken through the driver’s side window, you will see a four speed shifter. Edited March 13 by mfg Added text
mfg Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 (edited) I don’t get it… the pics and text indicate a four speed car… but what’s with the auto trans dipstick which can plainly be seen in the R/side engine photo?????? Edited March 13 by mfg
64studeavanti Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 (edited) This may not be the car in the original question. The car pix I posted from Facebook has no text indicating 4 Spd. Let's hear from OP as to whether this is the car or not. Edited March 13 by 64studeavanti
64studeavanti Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 Just guessing this is the car since he previously asked about a 62. This is advertised as a 62 sitting outside for 30yrs.

Not the point….… In the photos which you posted I’m questioning why that white ‘63 Avanti has an auto trans dipstick in one photo… and a four speed stick in another????? (can’t quite see if the car has a clutch pedal or not) Edited March 13 by mfg Added text
63stick Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 Might be desirable. R2 stick or auto with Deluxe red, looks like PW also. Don't think many of them around
64studeavanti Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 Looks more like orange to me. Could be the rare "Creamsicle".

64studeavanti Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 Someone with a Facebook account could ask some questions to get clarification as to color of interior, transmission, and whether there are any other parts.

Every Avanti is a pleasure to its owner whether it sits under a tarp behind the garage or cruises down the highway. As Raymond Loewy said in one of his letters to me, "I wish you many more years of pleasure with AVANTI." That was over 40 years ago and the pleasure continues. Now, back to the original topic.
