Where are spacers used in a factory Studebaker Avanti R3? (Not body related!)

Spacers or shims?

Hmmm! The definitions of those two words kind of overlap…

I’ll go with either/or!

Yes, an R3 equipped Stude Avanti could have a spacer under the left, or perhaps both, front coil springs!

True. I was thinking precision adjustment for shim but it is a spacer in the the raw sense of the word.

I can think of 3 more items that would qualify as spacers/shims……

Any more thoughts here?

HINT…. These would also be common to an R1 or R2 equipped Stude Avanti!

If my memory is serving me today I think the steering column at the dash was shimmed as needed to accommodate the shims under the cowl?

The steering box should have a lower mounting bolt that is slotted in the frame so it's shaft angle is adjustable to line up with the steering column. That is a good reason to keep the box to frame bolts loose when replacing the rag joint, and lower column bushing. Tighten the frame bolts last after so there is NO binding anywhere in the system.

Yes… The shims sometimes used between the dash crossmember and steering column is one I had!

Any other thoughts?

spacers used with transmission mounts. one for automatics, 2 for manual.

Yes, the spacer used between left rear engine mount and frame crossmember ( in Avantis with auto trans) is one of the answers  I had!…….

However, I’m not familiar with spacers used with manual transmission mounts….?

there are also 4 spacers between the brake booster and mounting bracket.

Yes, the four spacers used between brake booster and mounting bracket was the last on my list… Well done!

And I’ll take your word for it on the manual trans mount spacers (I see them mentioned in book)…. but for the life of me I can’t remember seeing them on an Avanti… Oh well!!!

I believe they are 1/2" thick and were also on other manual transmission Studebakers. I have a couple of spares. If I can clear off enough space, I will post a picture.

On my 64 4spd, I had vibration issues. I saw  another car had them, so put some on mine. Vibration gone. I assume it was enough to throw the driveline angles off.

Interesting… I wish there were clear illustrations of those spacers in the manuals. (maybe they are shown in the Avanti workshop manual)…. I haven’t ventured out to garage to look at it yet… This is important to me, as I’m supposed to help a friend convert a ‘64 Avanti from auto to 4 speed this coming spring.

And shims at the top of the king pins., at one side of the axle in the rear end on R1 and R2.

And I could only think of THREE!!!!!!

Shims or spacers at the door latch mechanism at the B pillar. Spacers at all four corner connections of bumper to body.

Just a lot of shims in our Avantis🤔
