Ron Dame Posted September 11 Report Posted September 11 These upholstery guys around here... they don't want to touch my car or want crazy prices... like $3500 for the back seat ONLY! And that quote, he didn't want to do, saying that they were AMC seats and you can get covers on line. I'm not convinced. First, these 1980 seats don't look like any AMC seats that I recall, but I also don't really recognize them as anything familiar. So who supplied the seats to Avanti?

Back seat is Avanti Only… most likely made in house.

John D Posted September 18 Report Posted September 18 probably Recaro seats but a photo would help. My 79 front seats could use a re-cover but they are also missing headrests and associated hardware. (Insert locations have been upholstered over.)
Geoff Posted November 4 Report Posted November 4 (edited) I inadvertently found your answer in a generic 'Net search. LSeat says they are Recaro. https://www.lseat.com/products/1980-avanti-ii-recaro-custom-real-leather-seat-covers-front.html And am I recalling correctly, the Studebaker Avanti front seats are out of an Alfa Romeo, yes? Edited November 4 by Geoff It posted before I could type my summary

The story, as I heard it (probably 50 years ago) goes.... Loewy was walking around an Alfa factory at some point and was attracted to the design of a pair of seats that were being removed from a car. He inquired about the seats origin, but not specifically why they were removed from the car. A similar design was used on the two front seats for the new Avanti. It was later revealed that the Alfa seats were being replaced with a better version because they were uncomfortable on long trips..
Ron Dame Posted December 1 Author Report Posted December 1 Mine are NOT Recaro. They have an integrated headrest and no adjustability. I suspect GM or AMC.
