I need to replace the Alternator on my 1964 Avanti R1.  Should I have it rebuilt or can I get a new alternator with the the regulator in the alternator?  If so how do I rewire?

One alternative has been written up and posted on the website studebaker-info.org.  Note that the original Prestolite Avanti alternator puts out (when new) 40 amps, not 45 as stated in the article.

This one also is internally regulated, so the original Avanti regulator can be bypassed or removed.

Rock Auto carries them: https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/remy,14341,alternator+/+generator,2412

There is also a Toyota alternator that wires up the same as original… and mounts up to engine bracket the same as original… I have one in my parts stash as a spare… I will post part number if anyone is interested… Cost me about $35 at Auto Zone.. but that was 7 or 8 years ago.
