I believe there's one major internal mechanical advantage..... (improvement).... Studebaker R3 and R4 engines have over all the other Studebaker V-8's....(including the R1's & 2's).....

Can anyone out there think of what that would be?..........(Not speaking of larger ports or valves)

Looser clearances reduce friction. Higher capacity oil pan provides more oil to help cool the engine.  Higher lift cam(s).

All true,...however, I was thinking there's a real important difference inside!

R3 and R4 had Howard's rods with floating pins and forged pistons.

Floating pins....floating pins.....floating pins....EXACTLY!:D

R3 and R4 engines did not have "Howards" rods. They were the same as regular R1-R2 rods with one important difference...they did not have a hole drilled in it for a pinch bolt. That's it. They were also shot peened.

Yes, for normal driving there's nothing wrong with the conventional rods.....

But for high RPM use, I can see how those wrist pin lock bolts & nuts, plus the drilled hole itself, might be a real liability!
