  1. Thanks GS

According to the parts catalogue SI only have the 63 version of the hold down bolt.

I re configured one of the original 63 bolts and riveted that on to the fender but yet to see how the other bolt looks and works.

Yes my reason for changing it over was because the original needed repair anyway and you can get the group 24 batteries anywhere as you state.

Any reason for the holes ?

    Thanks

  2. Hello everyone

    Just a couple of queries.

I have installed a 64 inner fender in my 63 Avanti and I now have to install the battery hold down bolts to the fender.

Does anyone have a photo of the 64 battery area (minus the battery) so that I can see the location of, and the look of the bolt closest to the radiator. I will need to make the bolt so a good photo would be appreciated.

I have also noticed (in photos) holes drilled in the battery area. I will need to install these but why are they there and can they be left out.

    Many Thanks

  3. I remember reading (either here or in the magazine) of someone discovering a rusted ws post, but they never explained what they did to fix it.

The entire windshield 'support' is shown as a part # in the Stude manual (btw the top part is fiberglass and the remainder is steel).

Does anyone know if this part is available? Cafaro used Kevlar to make it for the 1990 models (remember the picture of him with the sledge hammer).

I'll post picture when I can figure out how to do it (rusted right through on the bottom).

Geof Park was selling a windscreen surround a few months ago.

He is located in Ca so check the roster for his details.

Do you have a 2 or 3 groove water pump pulley. If you have added a supercharger then you need a 3 groove.I had a similar problem with the line up of the belts until I realised I had a 2 groove (R1) pulley on the waterpump instead of the 3 groove (R2).

If the supercharger bracket is the standard type for the Stude motor then the alternator should line but the compressor might not. Interms of hood clearance I guess the if the compressor is lower then the alternator then it should close. Maybe the bracket is for a Hawk/Lark application and sent in error. I guess you could double check.

Could you post a photo of the installation?

  5. GOOD LUCK.

I purchased these parts several years ago and i'm not sure any human knows where the engine side part goes.

The undercar portion is designed for an Avanti II and will need to be cut down in height to fit. (bet the seller didn't tell you that?)

I have asked many times for advice/ photos showing the engine compartment part installed and have had no constuctive help.

Please let us know what you find.

Sounds like your battery reinforcement is for a 64. The 63 is completely different and is basically a fibreglass reinforcement of the existing panel. It's easy enough to install as it only fits in one place although it does take a little pushing around to fit nicely. Although I have a 63 Avanti I replaced the inner fender with a 64 so that I could use the normal type battery. The 63 inner fender needed repair anyway. I was going to buy/make and install the 64 type battery reinforcement but like you the inner piece always had me perplexed. If anyone does have a photo of the complete 64 type battery reinforcement installed that would be appreciated.

Sorry I don't have a photo but I did install one some years ago.

The part fits in the front wheel openning side of the inner fender ie on the otherside of where the battery sits.

Take the wheel off and push the part up against the inner fender and it should become apparent where it sits. You then need to glue and rivet it into place.

    I hope that helps.

    Firstly congratulations on your choice.

I will start off by saying do not discount the R2 option. Many have been retro fitted with A/C successfully so it can be done.

An Avanti with a 4 speed box usually has a cost premium over an Auto but I guess if you had all the parts one could replace an auto with a 4 speed (T10).

As to which one, both have there positives and negatives. The studes are generally more expensive and more sort after and an early Avanti 11 is basically a Stude with a Chev motor and can be similar in price.

I don't think there were many 4 speed Avanti 11 made but someone else will answer that question I'm sure.

If it was me the choice would be a 64 R2 4 speed followed by a 63 R2 4 speed. The Avanti 11 is a neat car too so you have set yourself a task in deciding which one.

Best of luck in your search

I'm sure you will get some great information from the membership.

  8. To add to the metric speedo topic, I was looking at some photo's yesterday and noticed another friend of mine has a metric speedo in his 63.

I haven't seen him to ask about it's originality but it looks to be an older installation. The car was converted to RHD some time ago and may have been installed then, however the car was purchased out of Hong Kong so maybe it has been there for some time.

  9. I have a NOS metric speedo which I was going to install in my Avanti. Living in Australia it makes sense. I bought it off a friend after he sold his Avanti. He never installed it.

I haven't heard of any others but I'm sure they are around.

  10. I have a 1989 beauty. I would like to get a build sheet. Does anyone have an idea on how to go about getting one? Thanks.

Try the Studebaker National Museum. I know they do production orders for Studebaker Avanti's so maybe they do later Avanti's as well.

If not I'm sure someone will chime in with the answer.

  11. i am restoring a r1 63 avanti vin 63r2970 . it has manual steering. i want to convert it to power steering. on ebay there is a compete ps system but it fits a 61 hawk. will this work ? if not what are the diferences ? I have installed the quick steering arms and already have a pump. the eaton box is in good condition. if this system is not conpatible, which ones are

    thanks.

I believe that the ratio in the manual steering box is different to the power steering one. Whether that makes any difference i'm not sure.

  12. As the article suggests the car appears to have been prepared as a show car. I assume this means that greater detail/finish was taken in assembly of the vehicle as it was used for public display.

I have no reason to doubt this is the case and I'm sure the production order would back it up.

I would have thought this has some historical significance.

I would continue with the 64 and sell the 63 to me.

  13. Hello Yeleanor

I will try and answer some of your questions.

Firstly not all 64 Avanti's were supercharged. As with the 63 they were a combination of R1( non supercharged) and R2 ( supercharged) motors.

You can purchase a production order from the Studebaker museum which should detail what options the car was built with and if it was a show car then it might be stated on there as well.

As for restoring it, it sounds like you are well on the way. Finish it off and enjoy the ride.

  14. Hello

Does anyone have a photo of a 1964 Avanti front fender/nose cone without the turn signal in place.

Ideally I would like a closeup of the area taken from in front.

I'm currently fitting 64 turn signals into a 63 and I would like to see how it was done on the 64 model.

    Many Thanks
