Can anyone tell me where to order a set of metering rods p/n 16-287 for an R-2 Avanti? Or does anyone have a set in good shape they would be willing to sell? Jeff

I am confident that someone on this forum can help me with the below issue. I am working on a Carter AFB model 3725 for a 1964 R2 Avanti. It has two vertical holes drilled vertically into the carburetor from the bottom, into the "wells" where the air valve counterweights rotate (see two black arrows in photo below). These holes appear to be "field-drilled" (as opposed to "factory-drilled"), but perhaps this was done for a good reason . . . such as allowing accumulated gasoline to drain out of the counterweight wells before re-starting which could lead to a fire if the engine backfired. Maybe it was a field update in a factory service bulletin? I just want to be certain whether it is a good idea to plug them, or better to leave them "as-is", particularly since a blow-through supercharger is involved. I have performed plenty of "field updates" to carburetors in my career, so this is why I hesitate to just go ahead and plug them. Jeff

Some of the aftermarket gaskets are a bit thicker than the OEM's and thus the manifold sits a bit higher. Bottom line, don't put a thin bead of RTV on the front and rear 'china walls'; use a good thick bead or you'll end up with an oil leak. And, use brake cleaner to be sure all surfaces are clean of all oil and grease. How do I know? Experience.

When I bought my '78, it had only 24K miles and appeared to be very original throughout. The exhaust system was nothing short of terrible with a really ugly Y-pipe, and catalytic converter shoehorned in. What I found most interesting were the stainless steel mufflers which appeared to be hand welded. I can't imagine that there weren't "off the shelf" mufflers that would have worked fine. Were these hand-made mufflers really original to the '78 Avanti? Has anyone else encountered these? I was cleaning out the garage and found that I still had the mufflers. Is there any value to them beyond scrap?

RQB3263/81/305 YES I DID THIS ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO SUCCESSFULLY ..... Edelbrock alum intake and Holly carb both from Summit....worked fine right out of the box .... be advised you may have hood clearance issues.... i was given a low profile 360 degree open air filter that extends down over the carb a bit to solve the problem.... these are prob available from Summit also ....use RTV and not the worm shaped gasket on the front and rear ends of the block to manifold mating surfaces.... good luck ....see ya on the Boulevard .... I used the 69 Caprice shoes, did work great but needed to drill out a hole in the shoe just a very small bit to slide them on ,no biggie, two minutes to modify..

AFAIK NOS Strato Vue mirrors haven't been available for decades. The current reproductions are superior to the originals. So, the issue is the screw spacing of the repros, isn't it? --Dwight

There is a small L bracket that is missing, it is part of the front window channel that you ordered from Dan.

If you've purchased NOS Strato Vue outside mirrors, please let me know the screw spacing. I'm thinking of ordering left and right hand mirrors to replace my stock mirrors. The screw spacing on my car is 3.5 inches (center to center hole). Sure would be nice if the Strato Vues lined up with what I currently have.

WOW!!! I was happy (so was the wood) when I attacked my dash w/ mineral oil and bee's wax but your efforts have me thinking....

There is some kind of clip or something that the screw goes into per Dan Booth but you may be right I can send a picture but short of taking it fully apart right now it may be hard to see in any event. Dan Booth is sending me two new runners which is what I believe they’re called but he said they’re a headache to put in, but we’ll see. I’m not ruling out trying to glue it or hack some kind of repair if there are any ideas out there. Thank you again appreciate it.,

The only important interchange issue, if you plan just a long block swap, is to make sure your replacement engine has pre-1987 (1970-1986) heads or replacement heads with this intake manifold bolt pattern AND drilled and tapped accessory attach holes in the ends of the heads. If you try to use earlier heads, TBI heads or Vortec heads, you will need to change the intake manifold and likely some of the accessory drive bracketry.

You can swap out the 305 for a 350 without any problem. If you want to keep the 83 carb/distributor and computer system, then that will work also, with the exception of having to rejet the carb for the 350. The 350 also would need 350 exhaust manifolds since the ports and exit port are larger. You would need to have a muffler shop replace the flange that connects the exhaust pipe to each manifold with larger ones to match the 350 exhaust manifold. The good thing is you'll have a lot more power once you are done, and the value of the car will go up as well.

I was thinking that there was something similar to a L bracket that the screw went into and you could use that to attach the rivet to. Maybe we need to see a photo of the problem area?
