Sorry, that would normally not be the first step!

OK - remove the windshield wipers

Also might as well remove the dash-mounted inside rearview mirror.

The first step when replacing a 1963 Studebaker Avanti's windshield would normally be...........................?

Cover/protect the paint/finish on the hood/cowl and the dash.

Have the correct replacement glass! lol

All the above answers are excellent....however, I was thinking along the same lines as Brad.....Before doing any dis-assembly, ORDER THE REPLACEMENT GLASS AND HAVE IT ON HAND!

  • 2 weeks later...

When the glass shop replaced my windscreen they pulled the old one first then found the replacement, which took almost 2 months to arrive, was flat across the bottom. They had the car sitting in a corner of the shop while awaiting the glass.  Another 2 months later they finally got the correct one in. By this time it was nearly spring so I told them I would pick up the car when the streets were dry. Since the glass replacement was an insurance job it was sort of like almost free storage , $100 deductible...
