  1. The 400 2bbl engine is interesting in that the information I looked up for the GM 400's is that they had a higher nickel content block and also had 4 bolt mains while the quadrate 400's had a lower nickel content block and 2 bolt mains. If the earlier 400 was a stronger built motor, then why the 2 bbl instead of the quadrajet?

When I had the 400 in my 76 rebuilt, I wanted to keep it original so I had the motor redone and warmed up. From what I put into the whole process, I could have gone with an LS for not much more money.

Regarding trans swaps, the 200R4 required no drive shaft mods from the THM 400, just a rear trans mount.

  2. It's my understanding that engine selection changed as the ever increasing pollution regulations changed.

    65-68 - 327's

    69-71 - 350's

72-76 - 400's- some early 400's were 2 bbl carbs and later ones were 4 bbl.

    77-80 - 350's again

    81 - on - 305's

Wasn't 74 the last year for 4 speeds?

305's on the Silver Anniversary models were also supercharged.

  3. There is a similar thread on the Studebaker forum about the supercharged car. I remember seeing a picture or a Utube video of a supercharged Avanti, I believe red in color with a bubble type expansion of the hood that looked a little better than this hood enlargement.

There may not have been any other supercharged II's, but what about the 30th Anniversary Avantis? A supercharged example was at the IM in Dover.

Price-wise, if the seller gets any bids above 25K, I would be very surprised.

  4. Gordon, Please keep us posted on your progress. I have an 89 rest-mod convertible. Wheel wise, Dayton Wheel Company in Dayton OH would be a source for wires. I also have a 76 that I put Dayton's on 2 years ago and have been happy with them, except for the cleaning. My 89 has American Torque Thrust Mag style wheels, 18's on the front and 20's on the back. PM me with your email and I'll send some pics of the 89's wheels as my pic files are larger than whats allowed to be uploaded on the forum.

  5. Warren, Studebaker International has them in both the black background and also in the Silver background. The 1 3/4" size does work fine for putting on the wheel center caps. They've been on my 76 for two years and have not come off, so its a good adhesive.

  6. I did some googling after posting and saw a number of the Appliance wheels and caps on Ebay. I did pass the info on to Joe D. to look on Ebay.

The first picture of the round caps with the Avanti logo and silver background have the logos/stickers available through Studebaker International as well as the Avanti logo with the black background. I put the logos with the black background on my Dayton wheel caps and they look very nice. I believe the size of the stickers is 1 3/4". The one thing I don't like about the Dayton's is the fasteners, 2 screws and a backing plate mounted from the back side of the wheel. If the Appliance wheels have plastic clips, that may be easier to mount than the Dayton's.

  7. Yes Touring Sedan is the 4 door. The LSC is a longer bodied Avanti, basically about 9" in the rear seat area. Its noticeable in the rear windows. Are they worth more???? They would be a more comfortable ride for the rear seat passengers. The Silver Anniversary Coupes were supercharged, low numbers and special color. One was out at the Dover Meet. It would be a nice addition to anyone's Avanti collection.

When I saw the numbers, I was surprised with the '88 and '89 convertible production.
