  1. Ron Hall's #1963 Avanti,(you might be confusing Bloomberg with Hall owning the car), residing in the Studebaker Museum since his early death. Ron's car was the first to break 200 mph at Bonneville in September 1993. It certainly wasn't factory backed as Studebaker was long out of business at that time, but sponsored by Black Hawk SDC and Chicagoland AOAI as well as other clubs and many volunteer hours put in by SDC and AOAI members helping work on the car getting it ready and also being out in Bonneville for the runs. I believe Ron's earliest runs with the car was in 1988. Ron and the car were the topic of a great night at the Studebaker Museum a year ago. That meeting was made into a Dvd that John Hull may still have available for purchase. Hull had also compiled the program for that night that listed all of the past racing records of the Avanti's. A copy of the program also came with the dvd, which would have great information for your project.

  2. I picked up a window switch from NAPA last night. The old and new switches are built the same, but on the old switch, one corner male lug was shortened down to a 1/8", just long enough to solder a jumper wire running from it to the lug diagonally opposite of the shortened lug and soldered there as well. After taking some of the silicone off the RR window switch, it has that done as well. I tried plugging in the connector for the RF window to the working RR switch and it did nothing, so I'm starting to wonder if the problem is with the motor or wiring between the connector and the motor.

  3. I got the console top pried loose to lift and see why the switch wasn't coming out. All four switches were covered with at least 3/8" of black silicone that went all the way around the four switches. I had to loosen the silicone, then pull it off the bank of switches to separate the right front window switch. I'll get another switch within the next couple days and see if that was the problem with the window.

  4. Another issue has also surfaced related to the fuel system. I had the car on a lift last night and got the first look under it. There is a fuel hose about 14 - 18" long connecting the gas filler neck to the neck coming out o the tank. The hose is leaking due to the tire rubbing the hose. Previous owner had 20"tires put on the back and the inside edge of the tire has rubbed against the hose causing the hose to leak when filling the tank. Now I need to locate a hose and try to route it without the rub.

  5. I did get pictures of both, which I looked up yesterday in my iPhoto on the computer. Black supercharger was mounted in the same place as they were on the 63 & 64 R2 Larks. The Darts also had full R3 type air boxes also painted black. I would send pix but the forum tells me the pix are too big to post.

  6. Last November, the World of Muscle Car and Corvette National Show were at the Stephen's Convention Center in Chicago. I did see 2 Dodge Darts that had the Mr Norm/Grand Spaulding Dodge treatment with the Paxton Superchargers. I remember them as being black. The show was commemorating 50 years and had a class of 63 on display. Ed George had his R3 powered Avanti there along with Eric DeRosa with his 63 R2 powered Lark.

  7. After getting my newly acquired 89 out of winter storage last week, I noticed the right front (passenger) window is not currently operating. I'm starting with the switch and looking at it last night, I'm wondering if the switch does come out of the console from the top side. I've seen rocker switches like those before that have a couple of plastic ears on the sides that keep the switch secured. As I haven't worked on the 89's, how do the window switches get replaced?

  8. mfg, I had the THM 400 trans swapped out of my 76 400 powered Avanti for a rebuilt 200R4 and have had no issues with the trans. The 400 motor was rebuilt minus the smog equipment and warmed up as well. There has been no problem with the trans handling the 460 ft pounds of torque it was running after being rebuilt. The flywheel was retained, but the torque converter was changed to a "small block" type converter that used the inside set of holes on the flywheel instead of the outer set of holes. Its a good idea to go with the dual snorkel type air cleaner to run more cold air into the motor. I first used an open type air cleaner but later changed to a single inlet unit and utilized the cold air routing in the fender of the 76.

  10. I got my 89 convertible out of storage yesterday and and drove it back home. One of the first things I wanted to address was a non-working gas gauge, which I thought might be the sending unit. This was only the third time I've driven the car as I got it in early December, so I'm not all that familiar with it yet. The gauge had been reading full all the time. When I turned off the headlights in the garage, the needle of the gauge swung back to just above 3/4's. Turned the headlights back on and the gauge went past full. Turned the lights off and it again was showing just above 3/4's. Any ideas??

  11. The P215/70R tire does fit into the tire well of my 76, but the tire does not let the lid go flat with the floor of the trunk. I don't know if the spare well was increased in size, probably not since the round crossmember goes right under the bottom of the well.

  12. wdaly, thanks. A 3 ring binder titled the Service Policy and Procedures Manual was included with the car. The binder does have all the wiring schematics and on the gauges page, shows the resistance for the sending unit of 90 ohms for full and 0 for empty. As I remember with my 76, is opposite of the Stude sender reading 0 at full and the higher reading at empty. When warmer weather arrives and I can get under the tank, I'll have to check it out, but it sounds like the unit is GM.

  13. Eric, congratulations and good luck with the car. I'm sure you will find people on the forum very helpful. Also take Lew's suggestion to join AOAI and get the best car magazine around 4 times a year, filled with very helpful information about our favorite car, the AVANTI!!!!!!
