Hemmings, Hagerty and Coker Tire are all sponsoring the Great American Tour, driving Route 66 from Kirksville MO to Santa Monica June 19th - 28th. Held in conjunction with the Great American Race with runs from June 19 - 28th, ending in Santa Monica. Tour cars are to be vintage, 1980 and older. The rates posted include all meals, lodging and tour attractions. There will be at least 1 Avanti on the trip as driving the entire Rte 66 has been on my bucket list for awhile. It woulds like a relaxed way to see all the sights on the roadway. Google Great American Tour for information on the trip.

The 700R4, being longer, may require the driveshaft to be shortened. I went with a rebuilt 200R4 in my 76 on the advice of the trans shop owner. My 76 has the 400 motor and the 200R4 replaced the Turbo-hydramatic 400 with no issues. You do need as Gunslinger mentioned, a new rear trans mounting plate, shift linkage, tv cable and the plastic shift indicator plate, all available through Nostalgic. The only tricky part is adjusting how you want to control the lock up convertor, whether by a lock out switch or by braking or manual adjustment of the shift lever. The 400 with 200R4 and 3:31 rear end are a good highway mileage friendly combination, dropping my rpm's at 70 mph from 3000 to 2000. If I keep the speed around 65 instead of the 70-75 usual range, I can get 28+ mpg.

As of yesterday's (03/03/15)mail delivery, no Avanti magazine has shown up yet. Maybe my mail carrier is becoming an Avanti fan and hasn't finished reading it yet!

There was not enough under hood clearance for the R 3 air box with the hood insulation pad in place. I'm told clearance was achieved by lower motor mounts, some additional shims under the front of the car body mount positions and eliminating the hood pad to get the necessary clearance for the air box.

There were numerous items done on the 100K ++ restoration that most likely are not on any other Avanti. The electric power steering is an item also that probably isn't on any other Avantis yet.

Looking at any number of today's cars, that's no big deal, but in April 1962, name another car capable of that speed. IMHO the Avanti wasn't just ahead of other cars, but decades ahead.

Hopefully the Urinary Trajectory Contest is outside, down the road and downwind. AC and hood liner would not have been available in the R 3 option.

Paula Murphy, Barbara Nieland, and Bill Carroll established 4 transcontinental records in 9000 miles of driving at the legal speed limits and then topping that off with a 145.99 mph run at Bonneville.

I think the statement wasn't necessarily directed toward restoration as much as it was meant for getting an Avanti at a cheap price and dumping all kinds of money into it to keep it on the road. I consider restoration a completely different animal where you know everything will cost $$$$ to bring it back to like new.

I've never heard of this program and would think the Production Orders would have a notification about the program attached to them. Perhaps our learned archivers such as John Hull might be able to answer that question. What year or years did this lease program run? The length of the leases and if some buyers took advantage of the program for more than 1 Avanti would be very interesting as well.

Thanks Gunny. I know I've seen his name associated with the phrase many times when he was marketing some of his finds in the forum. As to the phrase, I'm sure many of us have found out the hard way the correctness of the statement.

Thursday morning brought another 5-6" of snow to us in the Chicagoland area with more predicted Saturday night and Sunday. I think the whole country is going to welcome Spring getting here.

I have a question about another quote. Who is credited with coining the phrase "there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Avanti"? That phrase gets a lot of mileage.

RQB3263, I did the same thing with my Safety bumper and mounted the driving lights that were on the safety bumper onto the end of the frame extensions. A Saturn type air deflector had been put on the car a one point in its earlier life so I didn't have to do that. The spacers at the bottom of the front coils were also removed along with having the rear springs re-arched put a modest rake back into the 76's stance as well.

The Federally mandated 85 mph speedo was an exercise of futility. No one driving then listened to big brother and held the speeds down during that time. I wonder how many speedos were pegged and broken from extreme excess of the 85 top end.

My round eyed 64 had a chrome valley cover. My vote for most easily rusted chrome part would be the R1 air cleaner cover.

You're right about the color. My 76 was a dark metallic red when it was applied. The bra really is invisible until you get right up next to the car, even then, I had to point it out to people.

The seating was called "Opera Seating" according to the owner's manual of the 2005 Honda Element that two of my daughters have driven during their college years. The rear seat is raised more in the Element than in the Avanti due to its SUV platform.

Devildog, you are on the mark about the plastic speedo gears. The trans shop guy said they had the right gear in my 200R4 trans, but the speedo reads about 8 mph fast. If I'm doing road trips, I usually have the GPS in the car and on so I keep track of the speed that way. Its much better and easier on the wallet to have it reading fast instead of it being off the other way.
