  1. I'm not a fan of the turquoise exterior and light blue interior, let alone an orange interior, GAG---GAG---GAG. The factory usually would not put a color blind person in charge of selecting exterior/interior combinations, but that, IMHO, is not a combination I would want to pay good money for. Someone in Needham could have swapped out an interior for the orange.

  2. psdenno, look through Bob Johnstone's Studebaker Resource pages on the Avanti registry for pics of the other combinations. I'm guessing the gold/orange & fawn combination was quite popular as I've seen several. One member of our Black Hawk SDC and Chicago AOAI has 2 - 63 Gold R2's with the orange & fawn interior. There has been at least 1 black/ orange & fawn appear on Ebay and I believe there is a gray/orange combo on the Avanti registry in the Resource pages.

  3. I've seen more "creamsicle" combinations than other combinations. To date, I've seen the three other colors, black, gray, and gold with orange/fawn interior combination, but only 1 or 2 examples of each. I've seen at least 6 of the creamsicle combination with white exterior Avantis.

  4. The source information I have on the later production does only list 4 doors being made in the 1990 model year. The Henry Ford approach (Any style you want, as long as it is a 4 door mentality) is most likely what sank the company in Youngstown.

  5. I have not found the Command Center seats in my 76 Avanti II that uncomfortable, they are firm, but do offer good support. They are angled a little too much to the back for me though and there is no adjustment that I have seen for that. I have taken the car on at least three trips over 500 miles in the past three years and have not had any back issues like I usually do in my wife's mini-van. I wouldn't mind getting a pair of Recaro's but that's not in the near term budget as the car is getting painted this winter.

  6. KUDO'S to Dan Booth @ Nostalgic. I called Tuesday afternoon for tail light housings, gaskets, and the red lenses for changing the trunk back up lights into tail lights for my 76 being repainted. The order was on my porch yesterday afternoon (Thursday), when I got home from work. That's great service, less than 2 days from Detroit to the Chicago suburbs.

  7. If you read through the Avanti dat base information on Bob Johnstone's Studebaker Information site, he talks about all the ownerships of Avanti production. The move from South Bend to Youngstown took place the 4th qtr of 1987. A little later Johnstone discussed that the 87's and 88 model years used the Monte Carlo frames. It was then stated that GM discontinued the Monte Carlo car in 1988, forcing AAC (Carfalo's Avanti Automotive Corporation) to use the 2" wider Caprice frame. Carfalo took care of the wider width by using front wheel drive wheels that had a high positive offset that tucked the wheels back into the car. I hope that answers your curiosity about the when, where and why the frames were changed.

  8. False, the window sticker for my 89 convertible advertises a 25 gallon gas tank. The tank was also located in a different position than previous tanks as the access door was above the left rear tire and the tank located under the trunk, eliminating the spare tire well. Storing the spare in the trunk with a cover makes for much less trunk space.
