  1. Paul K, I had mine put on by a car detailing business that does them for several dealers in the area. It was very professional in the installation and you had to get within a foot of the car before seeing the lines, There are rattle cans of the product as well, but I don't think it would look as good and uniform as the film that's all one thickness.

  2. The discussion of trailering or driving to events reminds me of what you can do to protect the front end when driving. Three years ago I had the "Invisible Bra", a 3 M product put on the front end of my 76. It saved a lot of touch up work on the front end. The car is in the shop getting painted over the winter (last paint was put on in 1989). I will again have the Invisible bra put on the car's front end as well as behind all 4 wheels on the lower part of the fenders where rocks can be thrown off the tires.

  3. Ted, It would be 3 hours away from you to Orland Park, IL, but Midwest Auto Tops & Upholstery has done some very nice work for me matching the acorn brown vinyl in my 76 Avanti and replacing the driver's left seat bolster, both bottom and top along with replacing the middle section (top and bottom) of the rear seat where it looked like a cat had used the rear seat for a scratching post. The had also covered a fold down arm rest that goes over the parking brake in the same vinyl for me. It was no small task finding a vinyl to match the 38 year old vinyl, but he found one and replaced the old sections with the new vinyl, making it a great repair. The shop does high end repairs as well. When I brought the car in, he was replacing a butterscotch leather interior in a 66 Ferrari, which was going to be at least a 10 K job.

  4. AMC?

An interesting footnote to the "safety bumper" is that a former Avanti Motors employee came up to me at the last IM that was held in South Bend. He related that he and another employee were pulled off the line one day by Mr. Hardig to "test" the safety bumpers by driving into one of the building's exterior walls at 5mph with a couple of the cars. How's that for some authentic safety crash testing??

  5. The engine number for my 76, RQB-2392, is TI211C8B, an 8 digit number sequence. Ingeborg, your engine number has a 17 digit number sequence, which is most likely a Chevrolet VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) that probably identifies a 1971 Chevrolet of some type.

I also noticed your Avanti RQB-2403 is only 11 after my RQB-2392.

  6. The Avanti's came with the 400 SBC engine 72-76. Sounds like a 350 may have been put in somewhere along its history. The build sheet from Avanti Motors would also have the motor number listed on it. I believe it was handwritten on my 76's build sheet. I also concur with Paul about the Rochester Quadra-jet carburetor, evaporative canister, thermostatic air cleaner and cat. convertor being on the 76's with the 400 motor as that is how my 76 was equipped (with the exception of the cat. convertor) when I purchased the car from it's 3rd owner.

That engine serial number on Ingeborg's engine is a much longer number than was on my 76's motor as well.I don't have the build sheet in front of me while on the forum, but I remember it having around 6 digits. I'll post the number when I'm back home tonight.

  7. yogi47 it sounds like you might be dodging a bullet with the 3 small rust holes. I have not had to deal with any rusting troughs so I'm not sure what the best advice for repairing them would be. I'd suggest contacting the John Ebstein AOAI chapter in Florida for some advice on the repair. Some members are probably familiar with that car. Check with the seller to see if he is a member. I believe contact information for the chapter is on this website. If a minor repair to the hog trough is the only issue, with paint, body and interior being great, then let your wallet be your guide. Good luck with the car.

  8. Gunny, we also could expand the free market thought as also being very fickle in placing a value on and giving credit to any particular model. What car started the sporty muscle image with the racy looks of a long hood and short deck? Wasn't Mustang in 64 that started it, but got just about all the credit for it. Many automotive historians seem to forget what Studebaker introduced in 1962.

  9. I saw a 63 Avanti 3 speed w OD at the Upper Mississippi Zone Meet held in Menomonie WI last September. The owner had a board made up for the car citing the equipment and said the OD was dealer, not factory installed. Anyone know if the 3 speed w OD was a factory option?
