  1. Nothing's under the tree as its in the basement for the 2nd year in a row due to us doing a cruise last year and in Orlando for a week this year with most of the family. The Avanti's however, are in the paint shop, the 89 convertible getting touched up and the 76 getting its 25 year old dark metallic red coat replaced with a Candy Apple Red. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all Avanti enthusiasts, friends and acquaintances!

  2. I removed the bladder bag from my 76 and put the plastic tank in a couple of years ago, leaving the pump in the original location and just rerouted the tank supply hose. I got a new tank from Dan Booth.

  3. The valve covers on the 400 motor of my 76 were orange like the rest of the motor with black pulleys and the black air cleaner. I wish it had come with the finned valve covers, but I think that was more of a 350 and 305 thing.

    Decal-wise, the is a square warning decal on the driver side inner fender apron and a decal or two on the side of the GM air cleaner. I have the car in the paint shop right now, so I don't remember the wording on the decal that had a black background with yellow lettering. I've also sold the air cleaner so I'm not much help on that item either.

  4. Yes I did. The 89 Avantis had the back up lights moved below the bumper on each side of the license plate, and used the "old" back up light location for 2 additional tail lights. There are other Avanti owners that have put back up lights down by the rear license plate to have brighter tail lights on the Avantis. I will need to use aftermarket tail light kits to accomplish this as there was not a tail light assembly on both sides on the trunk, just the plug with the bulb wired from the harness and a lens and bezel screwed in from the surface of the trunk to cover the recesses for the back up lights.

    I had thought the back up lights had a separate housing like the tail light assembly.

  5. In talking with Myers Studebaker this morning I learned the back up lights do not have a separate housing, they consist of the plug with the bulb going in the the rear of the space molded for the back up lights in the trunk lid and a lens and bezel that are screwed into the trunk lid.

  6. I was a passenger one night when my daughter had a right rear blowout on Northbound I-55 doing 70-75 mph. The car did 2 360's and a 180, we went from the right northbound lane to the car stopping on the median side shoulder of the left lane facing south. My daughter was 15 at the time, driving on a learner's permit, accumulating the 25 hours driving time required for the initial license.

    No one was hurt and no damage other than the blown tire, but we did hit rest stop down the road to check our pants!

  7. I could use both my 89 and 76 as daily drivers but choose not to. Both get driven a lot during the spring, summer and fall. I did a 120 trip yesterday with the 76 taking from its usual "wintering" place at my daughter's and driving it to the shop that is repainting it this winter. Over this past summer I put over 3500 miles on the 76 and around 3000 miles on the 89 convertible.

    My daily commute teaching high school is 34 miles one way, in the Chicago area mainly on I-80, and there are way too many idiots on the road to subject either car to on a daily basis.

  8. I dropped off my 76 yesterday for a repaint at the same shop that painted it in 1989. One thing I wanted to change is turning the back up lights into auxiliary tail lights. I'm looking for complete set of back up lights to mount on either side of the rear license plate. I've seen the LED's used, but wanted to keep the back up lights period correct. Anyone have a set or a source for a set? Please PM me or email to plwindish@hotmail.com

  9. The Avanti offers the most legroom of any car I have ever had. I love to drive my 76 because one can really stretch your legs in it. My Cafaro 89 Avanti, however does not share the same amount of legroom space. The foot wells were shortened and narrowed up in the 89 as I have trouble getting my # 13 shoe past the left side of the brake peddle to stretch out my leg.

  10. Let's say the seller is an uninformed Avanti seller. The car looks to be a nice stock 89. My 89 is red with black interior and black top, which I prefer over the red/tan combination. I don't know if the Al Jardine ownership will throw any more $ into the value. By the way, the window issues I had were the window switches and not the motors. AFAIK, the window motors are intact originals. Window switch grounds have been a large problem with some of the Cafaro Avantis.

    My 89 has been rest-modded. It has a carbureted 383 "stroker" SBC with a TCI 4L60 AOD trans with B&M shifter, Ford 9" rear end with 4:86 gears, 4 wheel disc brakes, and Torque Thrust 18's and 20's on the car. It has crazy amounts of power, but doesn't pass many gas stations. I'm thinking about taming it a little by going to a 3:50 - 3:70 rear gear over the winter or spring.

    MFG, the best looking 89 I've seen was at Dover this summer. It was a Candy Apple Red Coupe with red/black leather interior from upper state New York. It had only around 13 K miles. The owner said it sat in the dealer's showroom for 12 or 13 years. The candy apple red color and black-out trim with wire wheels made for a stunning looking Avanti.

  11. 1/8 mile, I'd think the 400 would take the R 2. 1/4 mile would give enough time for the top end supercharger boost to be kicking in, the R 2 would be coming into its best power range while the 400 would be on the down hill side of its power, as they aren't a good high rpm motor.

  12. I have an 89 as well. I sent a message to the seller letting him know it is a modified Caprice frame the car is on as the Camaro did not have a full frame under it. Yes the 89's were Carfaro Avantis, built in Youngstown. The interior and door panels are the same style as my 89, with the color being the only difference. My 89 does have the black-out trim on the windshield posts, door handles and the name plates. I believe I saw the car listed either late last year or earlier this year for sale and at that time, the driver and passenger windows were not working, which I have had issues with as well.

    I understand there are a good number of differences between the 87 & 88 models on the Monte Carlo/ El Camino framed convertibles and the 89's on the Caprice frames. The gas tank and gas cap location as well as the top mechanisms are different. Last summer at Dover, I got a look at an 87's trunk and there was a ton more room in it than my 89 has.

  13. According to the engine builder that did my 400, its very easy to get HP and torque out of the motor. He asked what I wanted out of the motor and I said 325 - 350 HP and he replied, "That's all?"

    After the tear down and cleaning, new pistons, a hydraulic roller cam, line boring the crank, block decking, and headwork to open up the air passages, a new aluminum intake and a Performer carb got dyno-ed at 365 HP and 460 lbs torque before going back in the car. The car can definitely put you back in the seat when putting your foot into it.
