  1. Thanks ...Crane sends a detailed break-in schedule and lobe lube and a recommended high zink break-in oil ($6.00 a qt.) so ill follow there rec. a....ive only done about 100 of these in the last 50 yrs of all kinds, aircraft, marine, auto from oldsmobiles to VWs and about everything in between...Ill take my time, follow directions, and do it all, do it once....BILL RQB3263

  2. RQB3263 Another quick update as i prepare to reassemble the 305 in rqb3263....I picked up the heads from the machine shop painted ready to go, and cleaned lotsa parts yesterday....they will be painted today and more cleanup on the block...interesting note..the old cam had at least one severely worn lobe which acountec for my rough running and "tic"....and four pitted lifters...the new Crane torque (rv) cam and lifters ($190) will make a big difference..reassembly may begin later today id like to be on the road by Fri. if it warms up in my shop....its been down in the 50's...I hope this helps some other 305/small block owners. ...BILL

  3. rqb3263 1981 Avanti II....Justa little about what ive learned in the last 2 days....My 81 /305 has 104k miles and exhibited all symptoms of leaky head gasket (rough run for first 1 min. then smooth)...so its time to do a valve job anyway....the heads had never been off so had the original factory stamped steel head gaskets...what apain....well might as well do a cam and lifters at the same time .....and oooohboy am i glad i did....this too had never been apart...so over to Crane Came in Daytona for a cam/lifter set and oh well might as well get all new valve spring set...now the really good news....the timing chain was very sloppy and my 81/ 305 had the plastic/nylon timing gear (prone to failure)...there is no way to tell what kind of gear is in your motor without taking it apart (to the best of my knowledge)...the new timing set are all steel Double roller about $25. Cloys brand......requires removal of fan , radiator, and move the a/c condenser(not remove just move)....and lotsa other stuff....do it all, do it once....lotsa clean up to do.....more later...BILL RQB3263 in Florida

  5. RQB3263....1981 Avanti II ...Im loosing fluid from front reservoir ...no external leaks that i can find...possibly going into booster then into engine intake.....Can any Avanti brainiacs provide me with a Mfg. and P?N for this mastercylinder ???

Im sure its an "off the shelf" unit ....thanks....BILL GREGG, Melrose, Fl....352-475-3190

  6. When changing transmissions from the original (rqb3263) th350 to 700r4 ....what changes or modifications if any are necessary to connect the shift linkage ??..Please enlighten me ....thanks ...BILL...352-475-3190 in FL

  7. Today I completed the taillight/back-up light mod I seen discussed in this forum. Simple job and all materials cost less than 30$....including red replacement red lenses ($1.50 each)...new double element sockets from Car Quest (12.50 each)..misc. wire split loom ($3.00) and nylon line clamps....The new back-up lights are re positioned behind the bumper on either side of license plate...almost invisible are 21/4 inch round seven LED held in by their rubber grommet ($13.00 each)....A minor mod was req. to the new tail/turn sockets but the rest was easy...I spliced the new right turn wire into the green wire on the right existing tail/turn unit....and...I spliced the left one into the brown or tan wire on the left existing turn tail unit..the better part of the afternoon and very little $$$...works great !!

  8. I recently replaced the speedo cable on my 81 Avanti ii RQB 3263 ...and ill tell you the easy way to do it and get it right the first time....Remove the old cable (30 min. max), put it in a zip lock bag and send it to "Speeometer Plus"...12405 Venice Blvd....unit 360,...Los Angeles, Ca.90066 ...ph 310-838-7351.......0r 1-877-900-9009 ..$69.50 delivered !!! and he will return your old cable ....mine was perfect and quick....WRG

  9. However it is not important as that project will probably never see the light of day.......I recently completed a fiberglass spare tire cover (2" blister) that allows me to carry a full size 17" x 7 wide spare...it came out great and fits in original position....Also I am completing the brake light conversion to tail / stop ...very simple w $5.00 red plexi and a couple double element sockets from Car Quest....req. fabrication of 2 alum. plates to secure socket into original holes...ill complete the wiring hook up when it warms up ...it is Florida after all...and i re positioned the back-up lights down underneath the bumper using LED (2" round) held in by there grommets...(truck style)....because of the angle of the panel either side of license plate , they will shine down and are not visible to the casual observer...later ....gator

  10. If you fail to correctly connect and ADJUST the TV cable form the trans to the carb you will burn up 3rd gear bands in trans very quickly !!!

I know this from expensive experience.....on a previous hot rod....there are plenty of instructions on the web on how to adjust it ...its simple....when the carb is wide open the TV cable should be pulled tight..(or at the end of its travel)..most have a simple length adj. on the cable ...Its small but important $$$...rqb3263

  11. I recently replaced the electronic Quadrajet on my 81 rqb3263....with a non elect.qjet remanned in Jax, fl by American carb.i also removed the computer (ecm) and all associated wiring an relays etc...very simple ...also required replacement of elect. advance distributor with a vacuum HEI (coil in cap) aftermarket distributor....not a big deal either.....and of course plug wires........Qjets work fine when you simplify the rest of the motor........My opinion if you take ALL the crap off of a 305.....ALL OF IT........ittl run as good as a 327....but thats just my opinion....and its a lot of work ....once...im done and mine runs great (use mid grade gas).....BILL RQB3263

  12. Make sure your chrome platter is smart enough to mask(?) over the studs....mine wasn't and caused fits on re installation...with chrome on the studs you will never get the attach nuts to start......been there done that ....rqb3263

  13. OK ....I have recently read where some owners have replaced there backup lights with a second set of tail lights.....This sounds like a good idea to me. since my backup lights dont work anyway..........but where do i get the red lens material ???

  14. WELL YOUALL LOST ME....I WAS JUST WONDERING OUT LOUD WHAT THE BEST repair resin is for the original layup.....my next project may require quite a bit of FG work....in my dreams ...rqb3263

  15. Thanks Glenn...Im taking your advice...checking w/ early corvette restorers....Im betting its polyester but i like to be sure ...for all the reasons you described ...thanks again .... BILL RQB 3263

  16. Well there all sticky...beyond that there are differences....the three that i know of are (1) Polyester (2) vinalester and (3) epoxy.....there may be others ....We can eliminate epoxy period....the other two have different bonding characteristics ( adhesion strength) depending on what surface you are trying to bond to...

and probably the age of the the Avanti layup...in short some might be stronger than orhers...thats my question....thanks...BILL

  17. I am new to Avanti...but am a 50 year hot rodder....I am currently watching a darelict Avanti and trying to find the owner.....It appears to be restoreable, not wrecked but in bad shape. The vin is: 12aav1230j1000251 It has a chevy motor with 4 center bolt valve covers and wire wheels, and 34k orig. miles...... I have zero, zip, nada information on this car but it could be an interesting long term project.....Any info would be helpful in making a decision to make an offer if it becomes available. please contact Bill 352-475-3190 or wildfelr@copper.net or here for everyone to enjoy. Thanks ....Bill
