  2. RQB3263....H ere is a very quick and easy mod to help move hot air from Avanti engine bay.......In the summer...remove the 4 bolts securing the hood latches to the fender well...procure new 3/8 dia bolts 1/2 inch longer than originals....place a 1/2 inch long by 3/8 inch inside dia. spacer under each hood latch (4 total) and secure with the new bolts ....untill fall then reverse the pro and store the spacers on top of the latch mechinism till next spring.....this will raise the rear of your hood up about 5/8 inch and allow engine heat to escape....this is the second summer for this on 3263 and it has to help....I just returned from a 3300 mile road trip with no problems of any kind cooling or otherwise...A shoutout of thanks must be given to John, Betty, Linda, and Micheal Myer and crew in Duncan Falls, Ohio for the wonderful hospitality and fine work they did on my car...Thanks again gang....BILL RQB3263

  3. RQB3263 I am in need of the interior lights (complete unit (2)). for my 81 Avanti II....john myer reasearched them and there not available (old Chrysler part)...so Im looking for an alternative that may or may not fit in the hole..approx 1" X 5"....maybe even LED....Wouldnt that be nice....BILL GREGG ...wildfelr@copper.net or 386-466-6434.......somebody out there in Avanti land has sloved this problem ....WRG

  4. RQB3263...I fabed my own out of .090 aluminum also incorp. ducts to alum double pass trans cooler...glad to send pics Wildfelr@copper.net....or 386-466-6434 C...I just returned from a 3300 mile road trip where the max temp was 190 degrees.....all my cooling system mods work great......BILL GREGG RQB3263....(UNABLE TO ATTACH PICS HERE ....FILE TOOOO BIG I GUESS )

  5. RQB3263.....TRANS SWAP COMPLETE.....but it req another mod (complete rework) to the trans mount crossmember...this raised the mount up 3/16 inch and centered it properly....this corrected contact between the speedo cable and the frame rail and eliminated slight drive train (drive shaft ??) vibration ...all smooth now ans maybe today ole 3263 will get new mufflers and the exhaust pipe moved to the right of the trans pan another inch...i will then have 1 inch clearance on the 700 trans right rear corner of the pan...the bigger trans caused this problem ....see ya on the boulevard ...rqb3263

  6. RQB3263...Trans conversion to 700r4 complete (almost)...on the road but still needs some alignment work on rear trans mount ...may get that today..so here is the final on that project ..i think....it was a difficult do...$1350 plus $200 misc...the shift quadrant on the trans had to be modified and the replacement i purchased was worthless....although the shift rod from the same supplier worked just fine...the original quadrant is made of hardened steel and cannot be redrilled and the geometry is different too so it req cutting and welding..so....45mph in 4th is 1150rpm and.70 mph in 4th lockup is 1750rpm im sure glad i put the Crane torque cam and lifters in last month....im not sure the 305 would have the b____ guts to pull at that low rpm....well it all works fine....so now mod to rear crossmember then new mufflers maybe friday...RQB3263....BILL

  7. RQB 3263....Almost done.......all hookups complete today...lockup wired to a switch on dash....all setup by trans shop.....serviced with 11 qts at idle in park.....it has to be in park cuz the only thing i got left is the shift rod and its on order and should be here Saturday...No other linkage changes are required........So next week ...a trip to the muffler shop to move the exhaust from contact the right rear corner of the trans pan then to the trans shop in Ocala for final adjustment check........next project ....Air conditioning.....what ever it needs ....Adios for now ....RQB3263.....BILL

  8. RQB 3263...A relatively easy day today....new drive shaft ...(49 3/4 inch center to center) fit perfect and had better (more) spline engagement than the original...cost $153.00......dip stick tube can only be installed if the grommet is installed in trans first...we tried it the other way it wont fully engage...i installed an electrical bonding jumper from the metric trans mount bolt to chassis...a few other minor challenges.....but next and last challenge is the shift rod from the shifter to the trans... It appears the rod to the steering column will hook up with very minor adjustment but the shifter rod appears to need to be completely re fabricated......there is sure no extra room to work with....i would sure like to see what that rod looks like on any other 700 equipped avanti II......Chime in ...educate me before its too late....RQB3263,,,,BILL.

  9. RQB 3263 WILDFELR.....Justa couple more things before i forget them.....The diagional steel bracket from the trans mount over to the exhaust pipe will be removed and discarded....caution....the bolts for the trans mount to the trans are METRIC on my trans and the bolts from the mount to the crossmember are SAE ...dont mix the up they look similure (the same)....also I shortened the metric bolts by 3/8 in so the wont bottom out in trans ...(its aluminum)....more later unless i forget......off to the driveshaft shop ......RQB3263.....BILL

  10. iM BACK..(RQB3263) tranny swap update........I now understand why i got no replies for firsthand data on 700 in 350 out swap....I (we) did the job yesterday. I purchased the 700r4 from Lane Automatics in Ocala, Florida......Highly recommended...$1325 complete.....that was the easy part.......dont try this alone !!...Im sure I could not have done it without big, strong and most important knowledgeable help....a few tips befor i forget them....Remove dist cap (HEI only)....My drive shaft requires 2" shortning.....exhaust pipe on right side of tranny tooo tight (up against the tranny pan) and will need modification, this will req. small mod to frame holes where pipe goes thru.....350 dust cover does not fit 700 tranny (find a steel one)..you will need enough 3/8 extensions to get back 3 1/2 to 4 feel and flex sockets....drain the fluid ...and cap the tail shaft spline ,,,,cut the trans cooler lines in an area easy to reconnect with hose connectors... cut the kick down cable and remove (dont confuse it with the similar throttle cable youll be in big trouble)...even with a 4 post lift, stiff leg for the engine, and transmission jack, it was over 3 hrs. coming out..W got the new2 one up and bolted in in another 3 hrs or so......going in was easier then coming out....modification to the trans cross member req band sawing about 1" off each side and redrilling the 4 holes,,trial and error....well today is a day of recuperation and trip to driveshaft shop....many small hookup still to do over the next few days....keep em rollin....rqb3263 ....bill gregg

  11. I would like to discuss by ph 352-475-3190 transmission swap in my 1981 avanti II rqb 3263....ill be picking up the new 700r4 later this week and replace the original th350 w 104k miles........If you have actualy done this id like to talk....ive done it befor on other cars and hotrods but it never hurts to get all the info and advice befor i start next week....thanks ,,,,BILL

  12. Thanks Joe:....I guess then thats what ill do.....when the time comes...on my other hot rod i have one and it works exactly as you describe..it very seldom see highway speed ....with a toggle switch ...but i have to remember to un-toggle it at lights...i will need to wire this one automatic ...THANKS...RQB3263

  13. RQB3263 1981 AVANTI II....Enlighten me on these "lock-up" torque converters...I used one on the last hot rod I built...700R4 on a 12 cyl Seagrave/Pierce Arrow 1939 flathead engine ...But im not sure I want to mess with it this time around....What is used on factory stock Avanti with 700R4 trans ??...thats probably the way ill go ...Chat me up Wizzards !!!....BILL RQB 3263...

  14. Good morning Avanti wizzards !!....Sand bagging no not exactly...yes i have been doing this car, aircraft, hot rod thing for 55 years, with many many motors behind me ...but..that experience doesnt keep me from asking for advise. Very little ive done in my entire life hasnt had to be done twice (sometimes more), but i always get it right eventually with the help of others with knowledge and recent experience. mistakes are easy and its been 10 years since ive been into a SBC. So today I will reinstall the intake manifold on my 305 for the 3rd time !! Itsa pain, another hour, another day....

So here is what ive learned in the last 3 days.....NEVER EVER use the silicon manifold end gaskets (rubbery seals) supplied with the gasket set...PERIOD !!. (unless of course you want to do it over because it will leak oil, guaranteed) .. Use gray or black silicon gasket maker instead..degrease the surface and lay a 1/4 inch bead across both ends and wait 15 min.....Smooish the manifold straight down into it and tighten and torque to 25 ft. lbs..A little bit of gasket sealer around the water openings at the 4 corners of the long gaskets is a good idea also ..Ive re torqued mine 3 times and always seem to get a little more each time ...This morning will be the last torque and final reassembly (Im getting good at this)...Its much more difficult (on a 70 yr. old) to do this in the car, easy on an engine stand...I should be back on the road by noon ...As for the 700r4 trans replace ...it will happen...after i recuperate....April at the earliest ....thanks for the info and please keep it coming ....BILL RQB3263

  15. RQB3263 I finished the valve job etc on my 305 and first break-in /test drive is great with new Crane cam. Ill do another 50 mile break-in drive this afternoon and change the oil to 10w40 , new filter and reinstall the hood.....NEXT PROJECT: replace the TH350 trans with a 700R4 in April...I would appreciate some enlightenment on this if you have already done it and know the pitfalls .....thanks ....BILL RQB3263 (on the road again in N Florida)

  16. Fuel shut off /filter installation complete...purchased filter at "Car Quest" and all fittings at "Cemtral Hydraulics" in Ocala, fl.....Easy installation, one cut, one flair, install, leak test....done

Valve job/cam, lifter, timing set project close to being done....A/C comp, carb, dist and harness all thats left...oh and lets not forget the hood...It should be ready for test run early this next week... RQB3263...BILL

  17. RQB3263....Removing the 5mph bumper was the first thing i did to my car last year...it was ugly and an Avanti restorer wanted it...I made block-off plates to cover the holes and installed small 3/4 inch hole amber LED park lights...I also installed a Scoop/spoiler/i dont know what you call it from the bottom lip of the inlet opening..Its painted black and is almost not visible...also installed a cylindrical trans cooler behind the scoop spoiler....all works well temps below 185....New cam and lifters are complete, hope to install heads today and fuel filter/shutoff today...adios for now ...RQB3263 BILL

  18. RQB3263...Please enlighten me...im going to install an inline fuel filter on the frame rail.....in the fuel line, on the frame rail under the pass. door area is a small rectangular device...could be a drain i dont know ...doesnt look like a shutoff valve but maybe it is i hope ....what is it ??? YOU CAN ALWAYS CALL ME ...352-475-3190H OR 386 466-6434C RQB3263
