  1. I am finishing up a restoration on my 64 R2 after the dreaded Hurricane Sandy. Having ordered a carpet kit from a reputable Avanti parts business; I choose not to name names. I was suprised that the carpet for the driver and passenger in the front only went up half way on the fire wall. I thought and expected the carpet to go all the way up and underneath the dash.

So, calling Studebaker International, they indicated their kit does go all the way up and underneath. No cardboard seen on firewall.

Does anyone know if indeed on the 64 Avanti carpet goes up all the way or just half way.

    thanks

  2. Thanks so very much for the extremly detailed; with photographs, article or explanation. I am thinking my 64 R2 #5470 might be in need of the left side replacement. If indeed I am correct I will probably replace both sides.

I too drive my car, a lot. Driving is a joy especially when I drive to work in NYC from NJ; about 60 miles each way.

I will submit this article to the body shop that did the original paint and fiberglass repairs.

I suppose labor will be around $2500 for both sides.

    Again, thanks so very much

  3. rolleyes.gifHey Avantiacs... The Avanti was released to the Studebaker shareholders and to the New York Auto Show today......that is 50 years ago today. I was awaiting the arrival of my senior drivers license in New York that day. So....my friends and I rode our bicycles to the Merrick, Long Island dealership. I loved the car, but the price !! All I could say was,"$5,000 and the white wall tires are extra?!"

Every time I look at my '64 R2......I remember that day, 50 years ago today.....

Thanks so much for the Birthday reminder. I have a 1964R2 that is fully restored and repaired after 2 idiots ran into me while texting & driving. I have taken a 1St in class in a ConcoursD'Elegance in Oct of last year. At least twice a month I drive from my home in NJ to my office in NYC; about 60 miles. The smiles, waves and photo videos are a birthday everytime I drive. Thanks Mark

  4. Hello all,

I'm in the Morristown, NJ area on a work assignment for the next few weeks, and I was wondering if any of you know of any Studebaker/Avanti/Old Car events that might be going on, such as shows or swap meets in this area.

    Thanks,

Hi, I am in NJ south of Morristown by an hour+ Its a little early in the season; 3-4 weeks ago when you posted. Most events are starting up now. I have not checked in to the website as work was consuming. When you are back in town email me on R2avanti64@aol.com or on this site and I will update you on weekly stuff. Sorry to have missed your original post Mark

  5. I am insured; happily, with Condon & Skully in NJ 8009496257 ask for Jennifer X 131 I switched companies after State Farm really 'F' me when an uninsured driver ran into me at 30mph. After switching with Condon & Skully another idiot rear ended me and they were quick, fair and paid all claims without problems. 2 months later the new torqu converter started leaking, I contacted them and within a day or so, another check for the part and installation. I am very pleased as the car is registered in Fl and garaged in NJ and driven into Ny once a month for fun.

  7. Need help finding the upper radiator hose for a '64 Avanti. Found a Dayco 70623 fits very well on the bottom, and the upper hose on my '63 R2 seems to fit,

but it has no number to ID it with and I cannot find a match at the local flaps. If you have a recent replacement I would appreciate help with the number

    and brand. Thanks

When I rebuilt my 64R2, I ordered all new belts and hoses from Dave Thibeault from studebaker parts/ service give him a call 978 897 3158 when rebuilding, I changed the pulleys as I added a pair of headers I bought from him too. wow, what a huge difference.........................

  8. Thanks in advance for your help. I have a 63 R-2 and I have rebuilt the carb a couple of times because of trash in the fuel line. My problem is, the car runs great with the blower bonnet off but of course it wines real loud. When I put the bonnet on the carb fuel bubbles out of the accelerator pump shaft. I replaced the seal around the shaft. Is there a check valve somewhere that's allowing this pressure into that circuit. I foung the needle under the pump tubes but there was not a new one in the kit. Thanks again Tom

I have a 64R2 and purchased a rebuild kit from Dave ThThibeault from Studebaker Parts/Service 978 897 3158 He is phone friendly and has always provided first class parts and information when needed. there is a difference in rebuild kits from R1 to R2, make sure you have the exact model of the carberator.

  9. My '71 Avanti 2 is fitted with a surge tank to the cooling system. I thought that Avanti 2 did away with them. Is there a kit similar to the one for '63/4, to do away with it?

    Thanks, Dave...

Dave, my 73 had a square plastic bottle as others have sucessfully commented on. My 64 R2 has the original surge tank which I have had repaired twice by Jon Myers. I have sent hime 2 others for resoration which when returned were beautiful. Sadly, after only 125 to 150 miles the solder fails and tiny leaks occur again and again and again. I am investigating a number of fabricators to make me a new one out of stainless steel. So far those investigations have not been fruitful. So, I will continue to look and look and look. I would really like to find NOS; I would buy 3 or 4 if I could.

  10. One year ago today I took delivery of my 1973 Avanti from club member Mark Halsband. I would like to THANK Mark for all of the time and Money he spent to make RQB1913 safe & dependable. The car is way more than I expected for a 38 year old vehicle.

This year has gone by so fast largely due to the continued ENJOYMENT the Avanti generates. It is used as a driver and generates more attention this way than any car show I have attended. Its those unexpected moments at the Barber shop, Grocery store and Church that bring back memories of the First time I saw an Avanti. This car is just as much "out of this world " now as it was in 1963. This year has been very rewarding thanks to all the club members and especially Jim Pearce for his continued inspiration. Now I think I will take the Avanti out for an ice cream.

    Enjoy, Jerry Smith

Hello Jerry, its a very happy Mark in NJ who just finished reading all your kind works. Ok; were does the check go? Really thanks so much. Yes RQB1913 has quite a history of restoration with all the receipts to prove it. So far with my 64R2 no one has hit the car while at a red light in the last 7 months. Did I mention I took a 1st in Class at the NJ Concours D'Elegance?? So, thanks for the very kind words and texts that you send during your errand runs and drives.
