  1. Stock R-1, with the quiet mufflers.

Seems many people believe there is no improvement to be gained by moving to tube headers - is this the consensus?

And if so is there anything to be gained by opening up the back pressure a bit by removing the quiet muffs and going with a large diameter custom exhaust? Yes it will make more noise, but I am looking for better performance.

    Thanks!

During the rebuilding of my 64R2, I spoke with Dave Thibeault: 978-897-3158, he has or had a set of headers which I bought & installed with the S.S. set of quiet tone muffles and pipes I ordered from Dan & Betty Booth from Nostalgic 800-282-6849. The car sounds as good as the 64 R2 looks. In fact, last week at a Concours d'Elegance in NJ I took a 1st in Class. Both vendors are especially reliable & informative.

  2. So, I got tired of looking at 12 o'clock on my Avanti clock. What sources are recommended for conversion to quartz?

I have used CLOCKSWORKS twice or 2 different cars. Heide answers the phone 800-398-3040. They are located in Eagle River, WI. I was offered the choice of a repair or conversion. If not mistaken the price is less than $85. They are quick on turnaround. The work on my 73 Avanti II and my 64 was for repairs. Afterwords, the clock was accurate within 5 minutes each month. Not bad at all.

  3. I'm wondering how many 4 speed 64 Avanti's (with rectangular headlights) are on the road? Only factory equipped vehicles please.

I am in the process of purchasing my second Avanti, 64, R1, 4spd, manual windows, rectangular headlights. I would like to find

a good rust free factory steel roll bar, I've never seen one advertised for sale. Thanks in advance for taking part in my

    informal poll.

I have a 64R2 and have a question for you. The 64 R1 you are buying, is that car in Maryland? I saw one for sale and when I called, I was told the car was already sold.

    thanks, mark

  4. Can anyone provide documentation as to the factory issue battery manufacturer. Common answers are Willard, however, the '63 Avanti Accessories brochure shows Globe.

I was at a car show yesterday in Red Bank, N.J. There was a pretty 63 R2 with about 36,000 miles (round headlights). That car had the Willard battery. This was a really nice original car. Sadly, not for sale as they just got the car back from Myers for some work as they said.

  5. Hi anybody have any experience with buying a replacement gasket for an Avanti II (Mine is a 74 model). I have looked around and see prices ranging from $70 - $115. Are there differences in quality, material, or construction? Thanks.

Having restored both a 73 Avanti II and my 64R2 I have bought with great satisfaction rubber from both Betty Booth with Nostalgic and Dave Thibeault at Studedave@aol.com You can call both dealers who will give you plenty of phone time with detailed information. They are good people.

  6. Thaks, called and emailed him but have not heard back, Ke

Ken & all the others reading

The son of the owner finally called me last night about the 63 R1 that was listed on Craigs list last year. My original offer was $2500.00 as this car has sat outside uncovered for a long long long time. He wante $6K. With the recent call he still wants $6K, this car at best is worth $2500. Other than full paint, all rubber, chrome, the interior is a total mess, suspension exhausted, on and on.

I beleve you bought a project car, this car in NJ is definatly not worth more than $2500.00 I still have all the photos I took from last year, so, buyer beware.. I dont want to speak ill of this Man, but his expectations are way out of line and I dont want anyone to buy site unseen.

  7. Thanks for the replies, guys. Mark, I know what you mean after having a motor overhaul, the tool (money) pouch might be better utilized for keeping a supply of money on hand for the vehicle. The only problem with money storage is that the individual pouches aren't quite wide enough to put the bills in. I suppose the pouch was a well meaning addition, but its a stretch to reach in and get tools out of that dimly lit area. Given the seemingly frequent need to fix things on our lovable "orphans", Its a good idea to have tools with when the need arises.

Mark, how did the "de-grilling" of the '64 turn out?

Sorry for the delay, the car came out really great. If you send me a an email, I will send you photos.

  8. I have a couple of questions about the tool pouches in the Avanti. Did the pouches start with the '66 models? What tools came with the kit? Thanks for any help.

The same question was asked a year or so ago. I had a 73 Avanti II that I bought well; well I thought I did, after a few years I was over invested, after a couple more I was well over $35K, I discovered that the pouch was more important in storing $5's,$10's,$20s,$50's & $100's. I even stored a few credit cards there as bigger bills were too hard to get.

    Serioulsy, the choice is yours.

    enjoy the car. Mark

  9. Gunslinger, I can certainly appreciate what you feel. As you remember my very restored 73 was involved in a transport accident. Then I bought a 64 R2 and did a full & expensive restoration only to be rear ended by a women driving with her knee, putting on makeup and talking on the cellphone. Oh yea, no insurance. 13 months later I got the car back; I paid as the insurance company I had failed. A few months later while driving to a Studebaker Car Club Holiday party and sitting in traffic; all 4 lanes were stopped, only to be rear ended again by another idiot; at least this idiot had insurance. So my friend, I for one can really cry with you. Glad you were not hurt. Mark

  10. Yesterday my '70 was damaged...it was quite upsetting to say the least. I was about to leave for its first cruise-in of the season...when I put it in reverse the brakes failed! The pedal went right to the floor and the car took off backwards.

The rub...I have a bad habit of getting in the car, strapping in and starting the car before I close the drivers door. I was unable to pull the door closed fast enough before it hit the wall and peel the door all the way around to the front quarter panel. The sound of fiberglass splitting and cracking is not a pleasant one and it all seemed to go in slow motion though it happened very fast.

I pulled the parking brake...no help. The only way I got the car to stop was to simply turn the switch off and let it stop rolling.

I think I was making up swear words when I got out of the car and surveyed the destruction. The door itself appears ok, but the front quarter panel and inside supports and the hinges look like they all need replacement. I was so upset I considered taking the insurance payment and just selling the car for what I could get, but after cooling off I realized it's repairable. Just part of life...as my wife said it could have happened when on the road.

I don't know if it will be repaired in time for the AOAI meet in Gettysburg in July...hopefully it will be, but it's more important to be repaired properly than quickly.

If only I had closed the door first! That bad habit is now broken!

  11. Guys, you could add me to that list also. I'm about to reinstall the instrument board and hook up the new harness.

    tluz@karalaw.com

    Many thanks,

    Tom

I too would really like a copy. way to go gunslinger you have another moment of fame. Thanks in advance, mark

  12. I'm no help to you, but please let me know what you find. I'm facing the same thing with my 83's stupid "double gunsight" modified hood.

Mike, I spoke with Betty Booth @ Nostalgic, they have a few hoods. Some are painted some are striped, pricing is $750 to $850 with shipping extra. After speaking with the paint & body shop that did my cars; the 73 was sold in November, I might go ahead to order another hood. Obviously I need to consider the costs with shipping then the cost of preping and painting the hood and hopefully not spending too much for the fit to be perfect.

Their number is 800-282-6849, speak with Betty; the wife of Dan and tell her Mark spoke with her on tuesday about the hoods.

    Good luck

  13. I purchased R5470 a few years ago; some of you may remember that the car had a reverse hood scoop and front grill. Yes, both were removed and repairs to glass over and paint happened shortly thereafter. Since the patch seams keep appearing after repairs and paint at least twice in the last 2 years, I want to buy another hood and paint to match the original color of the car. So, does anyone know of a car being parted out where the hood is available Thanks everyone

  14. There is a 64R1 a few towns over from me that I looked at last year. The car has sat outside for a bunch of years. I offered $2500 as is and the deal was going well until he felt the car was worth much more. He said it ran, sure sure. I will email him again and find out what the status is. I did take a dozen digital pics of the car; inside, outside and engine bay. I will keep you posted.

Ken, again I contacted the son of the owner who I spoke to earlier: here is what I just sent:

Greg, Is there a problem with possibly selling the car? In this market there are a few of us who don't want these cars striped, junked or left to deteriorate beyond affordable restoration.

Give me a real price and I will pass it own to someone in VA who wants to do a full restoration on a 63-64

    Mark

Either he will respond or totally ignore me, we will see or not.

  15. Mark, thanks, where is it located, you are both North and South of me, near Richmond Va? That sounds like something I may be interested in as poor condition is not a major issue. Was it in Lackland? Ken

Ken, I found the DVD with all the photos taken, the car is a 63R1 not a 64R1, sorry for the mistake. I emailed you mabe 4 or 5 times with 15-17 pictures in total. As said, the son of the owner is slow to respond and promised to call me in the next few days, he is so busy says he. blah blah blah. Well, enjoy the pics and hopefully if indeed this all goes through, you will restor and not make a "hot rod" As one of the guys said, if you want a hot rod, get an Avanti II as they are plentiful and less expensive.

Ken, I did receive an email from Greg who ownes the car I spoke of. He is supposed to call me within a few days, I will let you know as soon as I do and I might still have the DVD of photos taken when I saw the car last year in the early fall

  17. Hi All..

I have begun toi to put together my to do list for my new (to me) 63 Avanti..

One of the things on the list is to get the clock repaired.. Is there one of out vendors who does that?

Also.. Does anyone sell the fawn paint the dash applique is painted in?

    Thanks

    Ron

I have used a company CLOCKWORKS 800 398 3040 for two different clocks from 2 Avanti's' one an Avanti II and one from a Studebaker. I spoke with Heide originally years ago so she may or not be there. The price was around $75 for a total repair as I wanted originality

Ken, I have emailed and called the owner twice, no return calls yet. The car is in the Toms River area of New Jersey, that is around exit 88 if I remember correctly. I will try him again this weekend

  19. Last Fall I set out to find either a 63 or 64 , or an 87 or newer to restore and perhaps to hot rod. Ended up with an 89 that needed nothing. Would still like to find a basket case 63 or 64 as a winter project. Must be automatic and within a reasonable distance of Richmond Va. Ken, Deltaville, Va

  20. I have kept my 64R2 as original as I can & had problems with leaks around the surge tank. After using local guys & repainting only to have leaks develop within a month or two, I decided to send a couple of tanks to Joh Myers. Presto...all is well, clean, shinny, tight and pretty as new. He uses a shop near his location and the results are wonderful. So, email or call Jon Myer, you will not be dissapointed and the price is way less than what I have paid before.

  21. Will love to see the pix of the 64 R 2 looking like a beautiful bride and not the ugly step sister with braces! As was said in one of the other replies, Its hard to improve on the original. Some have tried different headlights ala a blue one in Wisconsin that has two wide slanted headlights and one I had seen a picture of recently that had 4 headlights up front. They all look cartoon-ish when lined up next to the originals. With all the work you are getting done on the R 2, better change out the 45 lb box for a 4 drawer file cabinet! Good luck with all the work.

    plwindish

I am still laughing at the photo before I restored her. I am away for another week and have the memory card with the currrent pictures in NJ So In about 10 days I will submit beautiful photos, thanks for your interest and sense of humor too.

  22. Recently on Hemmings blogs, but originally from Casey/artandcolor 1980s car show

Well this is very strange.....does anyone recognize it?

    AvantiRmodel.jpg

HAHAHAHA Thanks for the laugh. Yes that car was real. I bought that car about 2 years ago from the son of the 2nd owner who was a Studebaker dealer for a long time. I had the car shipped from North Florida to N.J. where I live. First thing was a complete service. After driving the car about 250 miles, I began a full frame on restoration. To be included was complete suspension and brakes and new exhaust system. Rebuilt the transmission and a few electrical issues. Then I drove the car for another 3-500 miles. Ugh, the looks were amazing that I got. Not a problem as I wore a Nixon mask; only kidding. Then the car went into the shop for full repaint, fiberglass repair of the front grill and reverse hood scoop. Also included was all new rubber for all windows, doors, etc. The front and rear bumper was re-chromed as was the bonnet and valve covers. New carpet was custom cut with extra padding and sound proffing. About a few months later; for the next winter, I had the engine rebuilt professionally-blueprint and balanced. Jon Myer is currrently rebuilding the Paxton as I heard some noise that would only develop into a bigger problem. So, all in all, the car is perfect and beautiful. I have a 45lb box of every receipt from the previous owners with every article ever writen, all Studebaker service parts, records, paint formulas and more.

Love that car. I will include a photo later this week.

thanks for the inquiry. Mark R5470 1964 Avanti R2

  23. Hello everyone, I'm new here. I am in the process of purchasing a 1987 Avanti that needs a heater core and maybe an evaporator. I've read some messages in these forums that are scaring me off. Has anyone sucessfully changed done this or does anyone know a tech in the NY metro area that is capable of it. Thank you in advance

I had the complete system repaired in NJ. While the end result was great, the final price tag was an issue that almost got legal. I would suggest calling Dan Booth with Nostalgic Motors. He is detailed and informative. Mark
