  2. And coming back to San Francisco a couple months later was by cargo ship.    It was flown to Tokyo in October 2002 because of a dock workers strike on the west coast of the U.S., and the backlog of outgoing shipping would not have got the Avanti to Tokyo on time if not flown there.

  3. Thanks!!   We all try to improve each issue...  both me, the AOAI board and our copy editors, Helen and Barb.  Especially proud of the story about how Raymond Loewy submitted plans for the then new Lime Rock track.  Something that was pretty much unknown until now.

  4. This just in- Studebaker International will have a limited supply of new production glass Avanti headlight lenses available at the AOAI Tacoma meet!
Identical to the original, both round and square glass lenses have not been available new for decades. They’re better than if NOS could even be found, since 60-year-old glass would probably have yellowed through the years. $99.95 each.
Check out their reintroduction in Tacoma, Aug. 29-Sept. 1.

I have the same question for the forum.  I want to know about Real Rodders reputation before I sink a small fortune into the wheels I want for my '63.  My first impression are that they do produce a good product, but in these times we all hope there are still good, upstanding companies out there who stand behind the products they make.  Thanks, John.  I hope you get a response.  Dan  619 933-7832

I've seen several sets of these wheels and they are all perfect finish and quality. Also dealt with the company owner and he does what he says and stands behind his product, from what I have seen.

  6. I received the May 3 issue today of Old Cars Weekly today and Ed Meyer, editor of The Steering Wheel, the monthly newsletter of the Missouri/Illinois Gateway Chapter (SDC and AOAI) won the Golden Quill award in the Regional Sub Compact division. (Ed won honorable mentions in some past years, but this is the first full award!)

Ann Turner, editor of SDC’s Turning Wheels and also me, editor of the AOAI’s Avanti Magazine won in the National Luxury division.
Other than Turning Wheels and Avanti Magazine, Ed's Steering Wheel was the only other Studebaker publication to win a certificate in the competion.

Three other Studebaker publications received honorable mentions: The Echo, by Chris Collins in the Grand Canyon State Chapter; The Studebaker Spokesman, by Claude Chmielewski of the Wisconsin Region, SDC; and Brian Curtis, editor of the Antique Studebaker Club’s Northwest Passage, Pacific Northwest ASC chapter.

Two real nice photos of the R2 engines in Raymond Loewy's Studebaker Avantis!.........In the first photo, (R4578), it looks like the Paxton outlet is tilted more to the left than on typical R2 setups.....Is that just an optical illusion Lew?

Probably just an illusion..... although whoever assembled it in France may have clocked the compressor halves a little off to one side.
